RULING ANNOUNCED
NEW ORLEANS (UPI) -
The New Orleans Saints must
give Detroit their sixth-round
draft choice in 1975 because of
a dispute over a first-round
deal in the 1974 draft, National
Football League Commissioner
Pete Rozelle ruled Tuesday.
The ruling was announced in
New Orleans where a Saints
spokesman said the team had
accepted it without comment.
Detroit traded center Dave
Thompson to New Orleans
during the 1974 draft and took
the Saints’ early first round
pick. The Saints said the deal
also included the Lions’ original
pick later in the round, but
Detroit disagreed.
Rozelle issued a spot ruling
during the draft that gave New
Orleans Detroit’s first pick, but
he reserved final settlement
until the matter could be
studied.
Under the final ruling, New
Orleans got to keep Thompson
and first round choice Rick
Middleton, a linebacker from
Ohio State, and Detroit got the
Saints’ sixth round pick for
1975.
Kenneth Reid in the high hur
dles, Keith Mathis in the 100
yard dash, Chester Riggins in
the mile, the 440 relay of

Griffin will compete Saturday

The Bears’ final meet comes

would wait until May 6 when
“certain things in the league
which could dictate a clear
decision,” are settled.
The Cougars have played
here, in Raleigh and in
Charlotte as a regional fran
chise, but they recently decided
to pull out of Raleigh and close
their corporate office in Char
lotte. Groups here and in
Charlotte have tried to convince
Munchak to remain in their
city.
Neither Charlotte nor Greens
boro have been ruled out, said
Malick.
“I still feel there’s a good
possibility of remaining in
Greensboro,” he said.
But reports have been float
ing around that with the ABA
trying to sign UCLA standout
Bill Walton, the club would be
moved to Los Angeles where
Walton would be willing to
play.
Low attendance has plagued
the club in regular season and
playoff series games. In Char
lotte, a playoff against Ken
tucky drew only 3,724 persons.
The Cougars finished 47-37
and lost the playoffs four
straight to the Colonels.
The decision to remain also
may be based on the upcoming
ABA draft in which the Cougars
have first crack at North
Carolina State’s standout center
Tommy Burleson and North
Carolina’s Olympian Bobby
Jones.

Unkind cut
PLACENTIA, Calif. (UPI) -
It has to be the unkindest cut of
all —naming a street for John
Wooden in the town where Bob
Boyd lives.
Boyd has lived in the shadow
of UCLA’s basketball wizard
since 1966 when he started
coaching basketball at the
University of Southern Califor
nia.
Now the city fathers of this
small Orange County com
munity, at the urging of City
Administrator Edwin Powell,
are talking about naming a
street after Wooden.
“They’ll probably want me to
cut the ribbon,” said Boyd, who
has lived here since last June.
To compound the whole thing,
there is even talk of naming
another street after Wooden’s
wife, Nell. The Woodens live in
Santa Monica.
