Dr. Lawrence E. Lamb
Pros and cons of
aspirin stand-ins
By Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - I read
your article, “Aspirin Can
Harm.” I believe that you
should have pointed out that
other analgesics may be even
more toxic. I refer particu
larly to Tylenol. A few days
ago 1 saw a woman buy a bot
tle of 500 over-the-counter.
This is not a new com
pound, having first been pre
pared in 1878, and was widely
used before the introduction
of the less-toxic aspirin. The
high toxicity of aniline and its
derivatives is well known.
You should have pointed out
that replacement of aspirin
by Tylenol should be done
only under the advice of a
physician.
DEAR READER - Thank
you for your letter about
Tylenol. The column you
refer to was about aspirin,
not Tylenol, and 1 did not
recommend that people
should switch to Tylenol

rather than use aspirin. You
seem to be the father of that
thought.
You may also be surprised
that I got several letters tell
ing me I should have told
people to switch from aspirin
to Tylenol.
I hate to disagree with a
former professor of organic
chemistry, but the older
medicine was acetanilid
which is now obsolete and
has not been used for some
time. It lost out when aspirin
came along. Tylenol
(acetaminophen), a newer
drug, is less toxic than
phenacetin. Other trade
names are Apamide, Con
acetol and Lestemp. Look it
up in the “AMA Drug Evalua
tions," and you can see for
yourself. The same source
points out that, unlike
aspirin, it does not cause
bleeding from the stomach or
intestines as aspirin can and
goes on to state it can be used
as a replacement for aspirin.
It is a good medicine for
the relief of pain. It does not
have the anti-inflammatory
action of aspirin. Thus it
might relieve the pain of
osteoarthritis (seen in older
persons), but it would not be a
good replacement for the
large dosages o£ aspirin
sometimes used for
rheumatoid arthritis or other
conditions where a red,
swollen, inflamed joint needs
anti-inflammatory treat
ment.
Tylenol has one other
drawback. It increases the
action of the medicines used
to prevent blood clotting in
patients after a heart attack.
Anyone taking these
medicines should be careful
about taking Tylenol. But, for
relief from aches and pains
or a mild headache, it is not
the villain you seem to think
it to be, and, in some ins
tances, would be superior to
aspirin.
DEAR DR. LAMB - Will
daily doses of digitalis have
an effefct on one’s sex life? I
have been taking it for a
heart ailment for about a
year, and my sex life has
almost gone to zero.
DEAR READER - No, but
heart disease requiring
digitalis often is severe
enough to limit one’s interest
in sex or sexual capacity. To
the extent that digitalis helps
your heart, it actually can
improve your sex life. There
are a lot of serious medical
problems that literally shut
off sexual function. The cor
rection of the sexual problem
that then occurs is totally de
pendent upon how much im
provement in one’s general
health can be achieved.

Obscenity defined
HARTFORD, Conn. (UPI) -
The Connecticutt House ap
proved a bill defining obscene
material as that which mainly
appeals to “prurient, shameful
or morbid interest in nudity,
sex, sadism or masochism” and
is utterly without redeeming
social value.
An ordinary jury would
decide whether material is
obscene.

Mums
for
colors
By Sheila and Allan Swenson
NEA Garden Columnists
As autumn paints your
landscapes, mums can add
those extra splashes of color
everywhere around your
home. Once planted this
spring, mums will reward
you year after year.
Among the newest and
most vigorous of the many
garden mums is a new
masterpiece collection of 12
different varieties. This un
usual group of chry
santhemums was introduced
in 1974.
Colors include shades of
pink, white and red to yellow
and bronze, ranging from
light to dark tones.
Best time to plant mums is
spring to get a strong
roothold by fall. You can ob
tain strongly rooted cuttings

in garden packs or pots from
garden centers nationwide.
In the fall, you save money by
purchasing young mum
plants not yet in bud.
Young seedlings, with col
or pictures, give you the best
economy. The same dollar in
vestment gives you yards of
blooms.
Plant seedlings in enriched
garden soil in good sunlight.
When plants are five inches
tall, pinch tips of tallest stems
to encourage side growth for
bushier display and more
blooms.
As new shoots reach three
inches, pinch them again; up
to July 10 in northern areas.

July 20 in central and Aug. 1
in southern states. Because
you keep growth compact too
by pinching, staking is rarely
necessary.
Keep mums watered
weekly, says Jack Atkins of
Yoder-Atkins, one of the na
tion’s foremost mum
authorities. He advised
adding several inches of
well-rotted compost, peat
moss or leaf mold to mum
beds as mulch to improve soil
condition, year by year.
Monthly applications of dry
5-10-5 at one to two lbs. per
100 square feet will stimulate
strong growth. From mid-
September to frost, mums
will bloom beautifully long
after other flowers have
passed their prime.
