Csonka
against
clause
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (UPI)
— Miami Dolphin offensive
back Larry Csonka, who will
switch to the World Football
League in 1975, said Thursday
veteran pro football players
should not be bound by contract
option clauses.
Csonka, who will play out his
option next year, said a player
with three to four years
experience should be able to
play for whomever he wants.
Csonka recently signed a $3
million contract with Toronto of
the WFL along with Jim Kiick
and Paul Warfield of the
Dolphins. i
He said the Dolphins could
not have matched the pact.
“My contract is rock solid in (
the sense that any kind of .
accident or injury on or off the
field won’t affect it. I had to
have that kind of guarantee.” ’

So you wanna be a star
By Murray Olderman
The tipoff:
The NFL has more to worry about than the fledgling
WFL. The rumor is that Joe Kapp (remember him?)
has spurned a seven-figure settlement in his suit
against pro football and will eventually take the case
to court, gambling for even bigger money.
Q. 1 would like to know how to get a chance to play pro
fessional baseball. Where do I go? What do I need? I am
quite sure I can make it into the minor leagues. — John
Finley. Chester. W. Va.
All you really need is talent. The procedure is to contact
the farm director of the major league team that's closest to
you, or any major league team. In your case, the logical man
would be Harding Peterson, the director of scouting for the
Pittsburgh Pirates. Let him know where you can be seen
playing baseball, or check on the dates and locations of
tryout camps his team might be holding in your area.
Q. Time and again, on TV and elsewhere we have seen
hitters fly out (with runners aboard) and then nonchalantly
jog back to their dugouts through the diamond, taking a
short route just as if nobody was on base. What's the ruling
if the outfielder who makes the catch throws the ball back
wildly, or it eludes the infielders, and the runners move up
while the batter's trotting across the field? — Ed Cary, San
ta Ana. Calif.
It’s a judgment call on the part of the umpire, who must
decide if the batter has interfered with the fielders’ chances
of cutting off the throw. If so, the runners would have to
return to their original bases.
Q. Your recent observations regarding the playing of the
national anthem before athletic events struck a responsive
chord with me. I have too much respect for our own flag
and the anthem to have them used as merely razzle-dazzle
and ballyhoo for sporting events. You should be applauded
for speaking out. — Raymond N. Brown, Castro Valley,
Calif.
Next question, please. (With this aside — half a dozen years
and more ago, even the suggestion of dropping the playing of
the anthem would have been branded traitorous.)
Q. Are you ready to take the World Football League
seriously now after the signing of Csonka, Kiick and War
field? - Billy Morgan, Hollywood. Fla.
Three million dollars are always to be taken seriously. In
at least three cities, the WFL is showing the kind of solidity
(meaning money) that enabled the old AFL to survive the
sturm und drang of sports warfare — John Basset of Toronto
obviously has the assets; a group of construction people are
building solidly in Birmingham; and the Chicago Fire al
ready is being touted as the best organized team in the
league.
