Is it ‘miracle mile? 9
By MILTON RICHMAN
UPI Sports Editor
NEW YORK (UPI) — Twenty years ago, a shy, young
British medical student peeled off his street clothes and
astonished die whole world.
Not so much because he streaked, but because of the
utterly amazing time he did it in.
Roger Bannister, of course, had the good sense to be
wearing his track shirt and track pants when he became
the first man ever to break the four-minute barrier on
May 6, 1954, by running the mile in 3:59.4 in Oxford,
England.
His performance immediately became known as the
“Miracle Mile,” and in many regards that is exactly what
it was.
Now we turn the clock ahead 20 years.
Dr. Roger Bannister, 45, is practicing medicine in
Britain and keeps in touch with all sports as chairman of
British Sports Council. He retired from competition
shortly after he became the world’s first four-minute miler
because he said he couldn’t be content with “second-rate
performances,” so you’re free to picture what his reaction
would be if he heard about the new “Miracle Mile”
coming up in El Paso, Tex., on the 27th of this month.
Richman Laughing
The picture which flashes through my mind is Dr. Roger
Bannister doing all he can to keep from laughing over this
“Miracle Mile” coming up, and if he’s not, I am.
A promoter can bill an event any way he likes, and then
hope the public buys it, but I am left with the feeling
nobody will see any miracles in the so-called “Miracle
Mile,” which is being advertised as the feature of the
ITA’s professional Track and Field championships.
Granted, the four man competitors, Ben Jipcho, Kip
Keino, Jim Ryun and Dave Wottle, are among the best
milers around today. But Jipcho, who has won 13 out of 14
since turning pro three months ago, never has bettered
4:00.8 indoors and has had virtually no competition at all
among the pros.
Moreover, for the “Miracle Mile” to be truly
representative I think it should include the hottest miler
around today, North Carolina’s Tony Waldrop, but that’s
not possible since Waldrop prefers to remain an amateur.

Personally, I’d also like to see Marty Liquori in the
field. Even though he never really has come back since his
heel injury two years ago and despite the fact he finished a
disappointing last to Byron Dyce here in the U.S. Olympic
Invitation meet on Feb. 8, Liquori always reminds me of
Pete Rozelle memorable reminder —on any given Sunday
he’s liable to leave the rest of the field behind.
Liquori feels the same way as Waldrop about turning
pro. He’d rather remain an amateur because he wants to
run when and where he likes, and he doesn’t care to have
anybody telling him when he must do so.
On April 27, Liquori will be at the University of Texas at
El Paso. He’ll be there for the “Miracle Mile,” not to
compete in it but to offer his impressions for ABC-TV’s
Wide World of Sports which is carrying the meet live from
5 to 6:30 p.m. EDT.
Liquori’s Different
Marty Liquori isn’t like so many TV hucksters. He’s
more ingenuous, more honest, and doesn’t try to sell you a
bill of goods.
He doesn’t give you a lot of ifs, ands, buts and howevers
about who’s going to win the “Miracle Mile.”
“Probably Jipcho,” he says.
Liquori doesn’t think Jim Ryun is finished.
“What people don’t realize is that he (Ryun) ran a world
record 3:51 in 1967, and a 3:52 in 1972 after he came out of
retirement and everybody said he was finished,” Liquori
says. “True, he’s not having a great year, but at any time
he could be the top miler again.
“Do I really believe that? I have to. I’m 24 and he’s only
two years older than me. I’ve had ‘down’ years, too, and I
don’t feel I’m through. I feel I’ve got another five years.
“Jipcho? He’s by far the greatest steeplechaser I’ve
ever seen, but I don’t think he’s the greatest miler. I
wouldn’t even put him in my top three.”
Who would he put there?
“Herb Elliott, Jim Ryun and Kip Keino,” says Marty
Liquori.
The greatest milers I’ve ever seen were Glenn
Cunningham, Peter Snell and Elliott.
You can argue about those three, and I’ll listen, but
please don’t try selling me this new “Miracle Mile.”

Make periodic check of guides and tips. Any grooved
guide will quickly ruin new lines. Replace worn guides
or tips as follows: .
1. Mount guide with strip of clear tape. Line up with
other guides. Cut winding thread 12” long. Tuck loose
end of thread under starting point.
2. Wind each turn firmly against previous wind. About
six turns from end a bit of doubled thread is wrapped
3. End winding well up and over guide foot. 4.
End of thread is put through doubled thread loop. Pull
free ends until end of thread is under winding. 5. Trim
thread flush with winding. Apply several coats of varnish
to prevent unwinding.

Garr, Tepedino
pelt Padres
ATLANTA (UPI) - Ralph
Garr was chasing a record and
didn’t know it. The chase was
over when he found out about
it.
The Atlanta Braves outfielder
had hit safely in seven straight
times at bat when he stepped
to the plate in the eighth inning
of Thursday night’s 7-2 victory
over the San Diego Padres.
He grounded out. Later, he
was told that he was moving in
on the record of 12 straight hits.
“Twelve?” he asked. “That’s
amazing isn’t it? Seven is tough
enough, plenty tough enough.”
Garr had gone 4-for-4 against
the Padres Wednesday night,
and his 3-for-4 Thursday night
included a triple and two singles
that drove in two runs.
Fezler leads tourney
PENSACOLA, Fla. (UPI) -
Leading a golf tournament is
nothing new for Monsanto Open
pacesetter Forrest Fezler. Win
ning one is another story.
The 24-year-old Californian
won more than SIOO,OOO out on
the PGA tour last year, but he
had to settle for second place
(three times). Time and again
after leading at some stage of a
tournament, his score rose in
later rounds.
“I guess that’s why I’d have
to say that winning here this
week means a lot more to me
than just the money ($30,000),”
said Fezler. “I’ve been close
without winning too many times
before.
“And, don’t forget, a win
here this week would mean I’d
get to play in the Tournament
of Champions back home in
California next week.”
Fezler was an early starter
Thursday and he posted his
five-under-par 66 before half of
the field even teed off.

But Garr had to share batting
honors with Frank Tpededino,
who had two hits, drove in three
runs and scored twice.
Roric Harrison won his first
game of the season after two
losses, although he was shaky in
the early going.
The Padres jumped to a 1-0
lead in the first inning, but Garr
tripled and scored on Tepedino’s
ground out to tie the score. San
Diego went ahead 2-1 in the
third on Willie McCovey’s dou
ble that drove Dave Winfield
home. But Garr singled in two
runs to put Atlanta ahead to
stay.
The victory pushed Atlanta
back over the .500 mark again
at 7-6 and lumped the Braves
in a three-way tie with Houston
There were numerous chal
lengers during the sunny,
almost windless day. But each
fired and fell back and at the
end of the first round of the
$150,000 tournament, Chris
Blocker, Lee Elder and Chuck
Courtney were tied for second
at a stroke off Fezler’s pace.
