Bronze
statues
disappear
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -
Bronze statues in Fairmount
Park have been disappearing so
fast during the past six months
that the city’s park commission
believes an organized ring of
bronze thieves are responsible.
“They are taking anything
that’s bronze,” said Park
Commissioner Robert McCon
nell. “I think they’re organized.
They know what they are
doing.”
In the past three weeks, two
300-pound bronze fish statues
have been ripped from their
bases in a park pond, and 20
bronze sewer grates have been
stolen from the art museum
terrace during the past six
months.
Also missing are two bronze
plaques, and “Seaweed Girl,” a
1,000-pound fountain statue, was
ripped partially from its
foundation.
McConnell said he believed
the objects have been stolen
“mostly because bronze, brass
and semi-precious metals are
up in value.”

Jaworski gets tax records
WASHINGTON (UPI) — Spe
cial Watergate Prosecutor Leon
Jaworski has asked for and
received Internal Revenue Ser
vice (IRS) records on the
investigation of President
Nixon’s tax returns.
Confirmation of the transfer
came Thursday from Arthur
Blech, the Los Angeles tax
accountant who prepared the
President’s tax returns. He told
UPI that he had been informed
that testimony he gave the IRS
in early March had been turned
over to Jaworski.
Jaworski recently asked At
torney General William Saxbe
for permission to review the
tax case.
“I have not been informed
that I am a target of the
investigation and I don’t believe
I will be,” Blech said in a
telephone interview from his
Los Angeles office. “But I was
told the testimony I gave the
IRS was being turned over to
Mr. Jaworski.”
Blech, a prominent West
Coast tax accountant, previous
ly told UPI and other news
organizations that he never
talked with Nixon directly
about the tax returns, but
prepared them on specific
directions from Frank DeMarco
Jr., one of Nixon’s personal
lawyers and tax advisers.
Neither Jaworski’s office nor
the IRS would confirm that the

tax case is now being handled
by the special prosecutor.
On April 3 IRS and the joint
tax committee in Congress
concluded Nixon had underpaid
federal taxes by more than
$430,000. The White House said
Nixon would pay the back
taxes, plus interest, and said
the mistakes were made “by
those to whom he delegated the
responsibility for preparing his
return.”
IRS said April 3 it found no
evidence of fraud by Nixon or
those who prepared his tax
returns. The joint committee
drew no conclusion on that.
In other Watergate-related
developments:
—Chief U.S. Marshal for the
District of Columbia George K.
McKinney went Thursday to the
Executive Office Building next
to the White House and served
a subpoena on James D. St.
Clair, President Nixon’s chief
Watergate lawyer. Requested
by Jaworski and approved
Thursday by U.S. District Court
Judge John J. Sirica, it asked
for tapes and documents
involving more than five dozen
presidential conversations with
top aides.
The subpoena directs the
President to furnish the materi
al by May 2 for use in the
September Watergate cover-up
trial. It was Jaworski’s second
subpoena against the President.
New test
for women
VATICAN CITY (UPI) -
Scientists are working on
techniques that would allow
women to forecast the periods
they can become pregnant by
do-it-yourself tests of mucous
secretions of the uterus, the
Vatican Radio said Thursday.
The radio broadcast an
interview with K.S. Moghissi,
director of the gynecological
clinic of Wayne University in
Detroit, Mich., who participated
in a recent meeting in Rome on
ways to forecast ovulation.
Such forecasts would make it
easier to control births by the
so-called Rhythm method, ap
proved by the Roman Catholic
Church which bans artificial
contraception.
Monghissi said some compo
nents of the mucus of the
cervix, especially an enzyme
called alkaline phosphate, de
crease sharply in quantity two
or three days before ovulation.
“We are currently studying
ways to simplify and perfect
this technique to establish if it
can be successfully applied by
wide strata of the population,”
Monghissi said. “Our purpose is
to put a woman in a position to
determine by herself the
decrease in the presence of this
enzyme through a method
measuring variations in the
intentisity of color.”

Masters. The study was pub
lished in the New England
Journal of Medicine.
Tests conducted by Masters
and three associates showed
that the levels of the male
hormone testosterone in per
sons using marijuana heavily
averaged only 44 per cent of
the level in nonusers of the
same age.
The study found that 35 per
cent of the heavy users tested
had subnormal sperm counts.
Testosterone levels returned to
normal after a person stopped
using marijuana for a week.
Masters said the findings also
suggested that pregnant women
using marijuana might impair
the development of unborn
male children.
“The avoidance of marijuana
use particularly duing the first
trimester of pregnancy appears
judicious,” the study said.
The study used 20 men
between the ages of 18 and 28,
all of whom had smoked
marijuana for at least six
months but had used no other
drug.
