HOUSTON — Atlanta’s rightfielder Ralph Garr (48) slides safely past the Astro’s shortstop
Roger Metzger to steal second base in early actions in Houston. The Astros won, 8-2. (UPI)
Helms 9 homer rips
Braves, 8-2
By GARY L. TAYLOR
HOUSTON (UPI) — Tommy
Helms did not hit his 715th
home run when Atlanta came
to town Friday night, but to
pitcher Dave Roberts his fourth
inning shot was mighty impor
tant.
Helms two-run homer, which
hit the base of the second deck,
ignited the Houston Astros to a
12-hit night in an 8-2 win.
Roberts got the win.
“When Tommy hits a home
run, it gives a shot in the arm
to the whole ball club,” Roberts
said as his left pitching arm lay
packed in ice. “The way we’ve
been playing all season, some
body picks us up almost every
game.”
Roberts, evening his record
at 2-2, fell behind on catcher
Johnny Oates’ two-run double
in the second inning. Then over
the next seven innings Roberts
shut the Braves down on four
hits.
It was Roberts’ second
complete game and even
though the 17-game winner last
season is annually a slow
starter his endurance this early
does not surprise Astros’
skipper Preston Gomez.
“We’ve been getting good
pitching and it’s not only
Roberts,” Gomez said. “All the
starters have been going five or
more innings.”
While Roberts got his trouble
over early, Atlanta starter Phil
Niekro had three tough innings
starting in the fourth with
Helms’ homer.
The stocky second baseman
has hit only nine homers the
last two years. He enjoys each
one probably more than Hank
Aaron, Atlanta’s home run
king.
“When Riverfront Stadium,
the new ballpark in Cincinnati,
opened,” Helms said, “Aaron
hit the first homer to be struck
there. Know who hit the second
—and the first for the Reds?”
Bunt is older
than organized
baseball
By Murray Olderman
The tipoff:
“If they paid that kind of money to defensive backs,
I’d go, too, ’ said Dick Anderson, the all-pro safety of
the Miami Dolphins, referring to the skipping (for 1975
delivery) of teammates Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield
and Jim Kiick to the World Football League. Senti
ment among NFL players is all with the Dolphin play
ers.
Q. 1 would like to ask a question I have been unable to find
in any books. What is the origin of the bunt in baseball? —
Don Battistin, San Leandro, Calif.
Our usual, trusty research dredges up one Richard
(Dickey) Pearch as the inventor of the bunt in 1866, one
decade before the start of the National League (and organ
ized baseball). Dickey was a stumpy 5'3" shortshop for the
Atlantics of Brooklyn and lie later brought his bunting talent
to St. Louis when the Cardinals were created.
Q. A question has been kicking around the Mon-Valley.
Who was the regular right fielder for the Pirates before
Roberto Clemente? — Bill Mahalko, Monessen, Pa.
You're making us go back to the early years of Dwight D.
Eisenhower as president. There was really a platoon job in
1954, the season before Roberto took over, with righty Sid
Gordon and lefty Jerry Lynch (also a renowned pinch-hitter)
playing out there, and even Preston Ward sharing time. But
the box scores late that season show that Gordon, a pretty
good home run hitter, was the nominal regular.
Q. What pitcher has Hank Aaron hit the most home runs
off? Also, what team has he hit the most homers against?
— Peter Bardsley, Mt. Vernon, Washington.
Aaron figure buffs know that Don Drysdale, the ex-
Dodger, leads the parade of contributors to Hank's record by
yielding 17 homers. Claude Osteen, still pitching, gave up 13
going into ‘74. Former Pirate Bob Friend served up a dozen.
The Cincinnati Reds have been his favorite pigeons, with 95
homers, followed by St. Louis with 88. He has hit 364 at home
(in Milwaukee and Atlanta) and 349 on the road, going into
this season. But maybe the most revealing statistic of Hank’s
prowess is that 206 of his homers came against lefthanders
and 507 were against righthanders, though Hank, of course,
bats right handed.
Q. What has happened to Hank Greenberg, the old base
ball slugger of the Detroit Tigers? — Peter Coleman,
Jackson, Mich. ,
Hank, who after his playing days rose to executive status,
is in blooming good health at the age of 63 and plays tennis
every day in either New York, where he has a townhouse, or
in southern California. In fact, he's on the celebrity tennis
circuit, playing in the pro-ams at such events as the Ameri
can Airlines classic, the Alan King Invitational and the
Dewar's Celebrity — one of the wiliest doubles players
around — so that current fans almost identify him as a tennis
player. For bread, all he has to do is read the private stock
exchange ticker tape in his home.

Helms answered the question
by pointing at himself.
In Houston’s half of the fifth
inning, Cesar Cedeno’s single
drove in the winning run, but
the Astros were not nearly
finished.
Singles by Lee May and Milt
May, who returned to the
lineup Friday after a bout with
the flu, led off the sixth inning.
Then Denis Menke and pitcher
Roberts got sacrifice flies. A
triple by Greg Gross drove in
the third run of the inning and
spoiled Niekro’s night.
The big righthander lost his
first game of the season in four
starts.
Houston added two runs in
the eighth on Roberts’ single
and Gross’ infield out.
