Nixon’s transcripts
WASHINGTON (UPI) — In a nationwide television
address Monday night, President Nixon announced he will
make 1,200 pages of edited transcripts of the Watergate
tapes available to the House Judiciary Committee and the
public*today. He said he will not comply with the
committee's subpoena for the actual tapes, but invited the
chairman and the senior Republican member to listen to
the tapes to check the accuracy of the transcripts.
Impeachment inquiry
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The House Judiciary
Committee apparently will proceed with its impeachment
inquiry in spite of President Nixon’s offer of transcripts of
the Watergate tapes. Previously, committee sources let it
be known that if Nixon failed to comply with requests for
the actual tapes he was not likely to be held in contempt of
the House. But the refusal itself would be considered as
evidence in an impeachment proceeding.
Controls expire tonight
WASHINGTON (UPI) — Wage-price controls expire at
midnight tonight, but the Senate began debate on a bill
Monday that would give President Nixon power to control
areas of the economy affected by serious inflation. There
is no chance the bill could become law by tonight, but it
would give the President power to roll back prices to
today’s levels if it were passed.
Samuelson released
BUENOS AIRES (UPI) — U.S. oil executive Victor E.
Samuelson, who was kidnaped Dec. 6, was released
Monday morning. It was 144 days after his seizure by
leftist guerrillas and 49 days after a record $14.2 million
ransom was paid by Esso Argentina Oil Co., a subsidiary
of Exxon Corp. A spokesman for the company said
Samuelson appears to be in good health and is scheduled
to arrive in New York at noon today on his way home.

ALGIERS (UPI) — Secretary of State Henry A.
Kissinger met twice in Algiers Monday night with
President Houari Boumedienne and scheduled another
meeting today, after which he will fly to Egypt for three
days of talks with President Anwar Sadat. Kissinger is
trying to reach a Syrian-Israeli troop pullback accord. He
lias a pledge of Soviet cooperation and is trying to line up
Arab support. Meanwhile, Israeli and Syrian troops
clashed on the truce lines for the 50th consecutive day.
