Griffin girls lead
tennis tourney
The Griffin High girls
currently are in first place in
the region tennis tournament at
LaGrange.
Paula Westmoreland, seeded
number one in the singles, and
Susie Edwards and Portia
Vaughn, playing the number
one doubles, have advanced to
the semi-finals.
The semi-finals and finals are
scheduled tomorrow morning in
LaGrange.
Paula reached the semi-finals
by defeating Newton’s entry 6-2
and 6-0. She followed up with a
6-1 and 6-2 win over Newnan.
Susie and Portia moved into
the semi-finals with a pair of
wins. They defeated Newton 6-1
and 6-2 and Newnan 6-0 and 6-4.
Catherine Cook, playing the
number two singles for Griffin,
lost to Jonesboro 4-6 and 2-6.

The 26-year-old shortstop’s
life was saved by the quick
reactions of third baseman
Doug Rader and catcher John
Edwards, who administered
first-aid to the stricken player.
“He had swallowed his
tongue,” Edwards said, “and
he was turning grayish and his
eyes rolled where all you could
see was white ... it really
scared me.”
Metzger was rushed to the
hospital and pronounced fit,
except for a chipped bone at
the base of his left thumb.
Astro officials placed him on
the 15-day disabled list.
Astros Pound Cubs
Metzger’s mishap might have
taken the fight out of many
clubs but not the Astros. They
pounded six Cub pitchers for 20
hits and equalled a club single
game scoring record in an 18-2
triumph.
“When we got the good news
that Roger was okay—that it
was nothing serious—we all felt
very good,” said Astros’

Tech announced Monday it has
signed Harold Rhodes, a junior
college All-America basketball
player from Amarillo (Tex.)
Junior College, to a basketball
grant-in-aid.

McGee struck out 14 and
walked two while pitching the
