Hoople picks
Griffin Bears
Egads, friends. Another prep
football season crept up on me.
I’m glad M. D. knew it was
approaching. If he had
depended on yours truly, he
would have been a little late.
Ole Amos B. was involved in a
skydiving lesson (teaching, not
a student) when this hippie-type
character located me.
“Hoop, babe,” he muttered,
“there’s a group of mean-old
Bears and thousands of their
followers in some place called
Griffin, Ga., who need your
help."
My hot air balloon was
grounded a short distance
away. The wind was blowing in
the right direction, so I hopped
into it and soared upward —
with all three burners on full
blast, hununph.
It was nearly night fall when
the balloon drifted over the GHS
field. Practice had ended and
the field was vacant. The
balloon silently lowered to the
turf, hununph.

There I sat with no scout
reports, no rosters and not even
the middle names of the teams’
managers to feed into my
computer.
The predictament would have
baffled most pronosticators.
But not the fearless football
forecaster.
I looked around. No one was
in sight. I reached into a secret
compartment and pulled out a
crystal ball. After brushing off
the dust, I peered deeply into it.
It was like tuning a new TV. The
picture came in clearly.
The Griffin Bears and Central
of Macon Chargers were in
volved in a tremendous football
game. The teams had swapped
touchdowns. The score was 7-7
when I joined the action in the
first quarter.
Central scored again in the
first half and led 14-7 at half
time.
Evidently, M.D. gave the
Bears some top secret info on
Central’s weakness during the
break.
The Bears came back and
scored two second half touch
downs and defeated the
Chargers 21-14 in the season
opener.
After the game ended, I eased
on the burners and the balloon
floated silently off into the dark
ness.

Rutledge injured
in Tide practice
By United Press International
Alabama’s top quarterback
hurt his right shoulder in prac
tice Wednesday and Coach Bear
Bryant described the injury as
“pretty bad.”
Gary Rutledge was taken to
the campus infirmary where he
was to be examined today to
determine the extent of his in
jury.
“I don’t know how bad it is,
but I think it’s pretty bad,” said
Bryant.
Should Rutledge, a senior, be
sidelined, Bryant said, his place
would be taken by junior Rich
ard Todd, “probably the best
athlete we have at Alabama.”
Quarterback injuries also wor
ried Georgia Tech and Georgia.
Tech’s No. 1 quarterback,
Danny Myers, has an injured
ankle and is not expected to
play against Notre Dame Mon
day night, and freshman quar
terback David Steinbrunner
pulled a muscle in his thigh
Wednesday and went to the
sidelines.
That leaves junior Rudy Allen
as Tech’s only healthy quarter
back.
Georgia’s No. 1 quarterback,
Dickie Clark, also is on the in
jured list with a sore knee, but
he is expected to be ready for
the Sept. 14 opener with Oregon
State.

Coach Vince Dooley had Ray
Goff and Matt Robinson alter
nating at quarterback during a
scrimmage Wednesday.
Mississippi State went through
a 70-minute review of its game
plan for William and Mary
Wednesday with special empha
sis on the kicking game. The
Bulldogs meet William and Ma
ry Saturday night in Jackson,
Miss.
Auburn’s scrimmage was not
exactly pleasing to Coach Shug
Jordan.
“We certainly didn’t have as
much quickness as we’ve got to
have,” he said, “And we cer
tainly fumbled a lot more than
usual.”
Louisiana State held its sec
ond scrimmage in four days as
the Tigers prepared for their
Sept. 14 game with Colorado,
and Tulane ran through a two
hour drill of its strategy for the
Mississippi game Saturday.
