Merger study unit
has session today
A meeting of the city-county
government merger study
committee was scheduled this
afternoon at 4 o’clock at the
Chamber of Commerce.
Marshall Sims, Griffin attor
ney, is chairman of the
Chamber study group.
The committee has been
looking into the possibility of
city-county merger.

Boys ’ Club
sets dance
There will be a record hop
Friday night immediately
following the Griffin-Spalding
High — Macon Central High
football game at the Solomon
Street Boys’ Club site. The
dance which will last till mid
night will be for junior and
senior high age young men and
women only.
Johnny Hightowers of WJGA
radio in Jackson, Ga., will bring
a variety of records for the
event and will also serve as disc
jockey for the evening.
According to unit supervisor
Scott Coggins, “The record hop
will give the young people of the
community something to do
after the ball game is over. The
Boys’ Club hopes to provide an
atmosphere for fun and relaxa
tion.”
A small admission charge will
be collected to help cover ex
penses. Singles will be charged
35 cents and couples will be
charged 50 cents.
Moose to help
The Legion of the Moose will
be among the organization
which will help the Griffin New
comers stage a giant garage
sale here Saturday.
It will be held at the Spalding
Kiwanis Fairgrounds from 9
a.m. till 6 p.m.
Food class
is planned
The Spalding County Ex
tension Service will sponsor a
home economics class, “Food in
a Flash” on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at
7:30 p.m. for interested
homemakers.
Mrs. Elizabeth Watkins,
Central Georgia EMC , will
present the program and will
include many ideas in food
preparation for home use.
The class will be held at the
County Extension office, comer
of Fifth and Slaton streets. Pre
registration is necessary.
Griffin was
represented
Mrs. Clayton Hoskins,
president of the Griffin-
Spalding Association of Retired
Teachers, and Miss Harriet
Berry represented their
association at a leadership
conference for the Georgia
Retired Teachers Association in
Macon. The event was co
sponsored by the national
association.
More than 100 leaders from
throughout the state attended.
The Griffin association, with
some 90 members, will host the
district retired teachers
association during the GAE
meet here on Oct. 16.
Lunch will be served.

The Rev. Clayton Brown will
be the guest speaker for the
morning worship service. Also
the Freedom Quartet of Atlanta
and other local singing groups
will be present.

pastor.
Weaver named
vice president
Otis Weaver, Jr., of Griffin
has been elected first vice
president of the Southern
Traffic League. He moved up
from second vice president
yesterday at the league’s
meeting in Atlanta.
The Griffin attorney is in line
to become president of the
organization. Several hundred
people attended the session
yesterday.
Weaver is associated with his
father in a commercial traffic
service in Griffin. The firm
arranges shipments of mer
chandise of all types all over the
nation.

HONG KONG (UPI) - Sen. J. W. Fulbright, D-Ark.,
chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,
and several other members of an American
congressional delegation met recently with Chiao Kuan
hua, China’s vice foreign minister, the New China News
Agency said today.
Guests at the dinner included the chief of the U.S. liaison
office in China, David K. E. Bruce.
