NEW YORK (UPI) - Tempo
rary buildings made of panels
of fiberglass fabric covered wth
Teflon may account for 40 per
cent of all new college building
construction by 1980, says Dr.
Harold B. Gores, president of
Educational Facilities
Laboratories. These structures
are either air supported like
bubble buildings or tension
supported with cables on a
metal frame. Goores said the
new fabric covers may also be
used to roof around 4,000 sports
stadiums around the country to
keep out rain and snow.

Thompson, a handsome 40 -

boats were still patrolling
Biscayne Bay in the off-shore
protective zone set up after
Nixon’s election in 1968.
The Secret Service had
announced in Washington it
would begin to “phase out” its
protective operations at the
Nixon compound.
“We have learned that Key
Biscayne will not be the
primary residence of the
former President,” Secret Ser
vice spokesman William Haw
thorne said in Washington
Tuesday.
The General Services Ad
ministration has announced it
plans to remove some of the
$17.1 million worth of govern
ment-installed improvements to
the Nixon compounds here and
at San Clemente, Calif.
However, there was no
indication that chore has begun
at the Key Biscayne home.

dox, with an unexpected land
slide in the Democratic runoff.
Thompson edged Harold Dye,
an Atlanta businessman and con
verted Democrat, by about 300
votes.
Busbee will be heavily favored
in the general election since
Democrats greatly outnumber
Republicans, who had their first
state primary in Georgia only
six years ago.
Like Maddox, many of
whose political views parallel
his, Thompson is an attention
getter, a showman at heart.
Ever since he ousted an en
trenched Democrat in 1967 to
become mayor of Macon, Geor
gia’s third largest city, Thomp
son has made news and has
heightened the controversy
which swirled about him from
the start.
Smoothing out a common -
man approach which has proved
successful politically, he says,
“I’m a cotton sox Republican
born with a stainless steel spoon
in my mouth.”

Minding the store
ATLANTA—Lieutenant Governor Lester Maddox displays one of his Maddox clocks to a
couple of young customers in his Underground Atlanta store. Maddox opened the store after
losing the Democratic gubernatorial nomination to George Busbee. Maddox and his wife
Virginia (R) plan to spend their evenings in the store until his term in office to complete.

fame in a number of ways, but
the most wide-spread grew from
his instructions to Macon police
to “shoot to kill” if necessary
in apprehending felons. He re
marked during impending racial
unrest in 1970, “Those people
engaged in lawlessness and an
archy must be stopped. Shoot
to kill.”
He told police later to “shoot
on sight any individual engaged
in an armed robbery.” He said
in 1972, “Criminals are being
brutal to police now. I’m all
for shooting criminals.”
“If a policeman shot a burg
lar in the act of robbery, I’d
give him a medal,” Thompson
said.
He became ‘ ‘ Machinegun Ron
nie” when, reportedly armed
with a submachine gun, he
opened fire on a suspected
sniper’s nest. He capitalized on
his new tag, buying for the city
a surplus personnel carrier and
marketing machinegun tie
clasps to finance political wars.
Thompson realizes his mea
sures are extreme, but he says
they are needed and that they
work in cutting down on crime
in Macon.
Now, Ronnie Thompson is the
Republican nominee for govern
or and he decidedly faces an
uphill climb.
Much will be made of his
hardline law - and - order stand.
There will be mention perhaps of
a reported stay in a psychiatric
hospital, of a rumored federal
grand jury investigation, of a
$50,000 damage judgment
against him and a policeman for
the shooting, by the officer, of a
12-year-old boy.
