I Edwards is a star
BATON ROUGE, La. (UPI) - Gov. Edwin Edwards is
making his movie debut as a gambling dandy in the film
“Mandingo.”
While Edwards was being fitted for his costume Thurs
day, executive producer Ralph Serpe explained to the
governor his role would be part of a gambling scene.
“I can handle that,” said Edwards, who sometimes goes
to Las Vegas to try his luck on the dice tables.
Edwards said he was given a small part in the movie as
a favor for his help in bringing the filming to Louisiana.
Ambassador in Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (UPI) — Takeshi Yasukawa,
Japanese ambassador to the United States, visited
Indiana Thursday as part of his tour of the Midwest.
He told Gov. Otis Bowen his country depended almost
totally on the United States for soybeans and said he
hoped there would be enough of the crop this year to avoid
a repeat of last year’s limit on the amount exported.
Waldheim honors dead
UNITED NATIONS (UPI) — Secretary General Kurt
Waldheim honored Thursday 36 members of the U.N.
peacekeeping forces killed recently in Cyprus and the
Middle East.
“The service of peace is an arduous pursuit, and it can
also be a dangerous one,” Waldheim said after laying a
| wreath under the memorial plaque for U.N. soldiers killed
in service. “The peace keeping forces of the United
: Nations represent the objective will for peace and
conciliation of the international community.”
Trudeau to Europe
OTTAWA (UPI) — Prime Minister Pierre Elliott
|| Trudeau plans to visit France and Belgium next month,
his office announced Thursday.
