Bears play Chargers tonight
Central of Macon is the
winningest triple-A prep foot
ball team in Georgia over the
past five years.
The Chargers’ regular season
record for five years is 48-1-1.
I
AM
GRATEFUL
for the opportunity of offering myself as a candidate
for public office within the democratic process.
That I lost isn’t of ultimate importance • someone
had to.
What does matter is that the opportunity, as it is
to all citizens was there.
May this most precious of all democratic
privileges always perserve.
To Mrs. Shapard, my very best wishes for all
possible success in representing us in the Georgia
Senate.
To you who worked so hard on my behalf, my
humble and heartfelt thanks.
I may have lost an election, but I have won
something far more valuable to me. Good friends.

Central will put that record on
the line tonight at Memorial
Stadium when they face Coach
Max Dowis’ Griffin Bears in the
season opener for both teams.
Game time is 8 o’clock.
1974 Griffin High School Bears
While Griffin’s five year
record is not as impressive,
Coach Dowis has established a
winning tradition here and his
current edition of the Bears is
considered a Region 6-AAA title
contender.
Central and Griffin were
rated among the state’s best
triple-A teams in pre-season
polls.
The Chargers will bring an
experienced squad to Griffin.
On top of that, they have out
standing size.
Many people feel that Griffin
will not face a bigger or better
team in 1974.
If Griffin has an edge, it
probably is speed, especially in
the backfield.
Since Central’s offensive and
Moto cross races
scheduled at AIR
HAMPTON - The con
struction of the new 1V« mile
moto cross course at Atlanta
International Raceway has
been completed and the first
activity slated for the
challenging layout is set for
Saturday. That will be the first
session of the two-day Gary
Bailey Moto Cross School.
First day of racing will be the
amateur moto cross races on
defensive lines are much larger
than Griffin’s, Coach Dowis is
expected to utilize that speed
and passing to offset Central’s
advantages.
If the current weather fore
cast holds up, the game will be
played on a soggy field and that
could slightly alter both teams’
game plan.
Offensively, Coach Dowis will
start Kenny Ellison at tight end,
Johnny Wilder at split end, Jeff
Hunt and Joey Crosby at tackle,
Tom Fetzer and Tom Mason at
guard, David McDonald or
Scott Ross at center, Willie
Jordan at quarterback, Ronnie
Bass at fullback and will
alternate Randy Cooper, Alonzo
Mathis, Johnny Roberts and
Mike Head at the running back
positions.
Saturday, Sept. 14 with a major
professional race slated for
Sunday, Sept. 15.
The course utilizes a large
portion of the infield plus two
points where the course crosses
the backstretch of the mile and
a half Atlanta 500 oval and the
hill overlooking the backstretch
where the raceway’s electric
scoreboard is located. The
riders in the events at A.I.R. will
have two creek beds to cross
with seven crossings per lap
during each of the events.
The course, designed by
professional rider Gary Bailey,
also features a 40-foot change of
elevation from the creek bed to
the top of the scoring hill.
Another distinctive feature of
the facility is a nine-foot jump
that doubles as a spectator
tunnel from the outside of the
course to the interior.
Activity for the amateur
riders on Saturday consists of
two 30-minute heats (or motos)
for motorcycles up to 125 cc,
another pair for machines with
engines not exceeding 250 cc
and two more for open class
competitors. Overall winners
will receive trophies, based on
points won in their class heats.
Sunday’s races will feature
both expert and novice riders
competing in 250 and Open
classes. Raceway officials are
working with officials of the
sanctioning American Motor
cycle Association to arrange for
a Powder Puff event for distaff
riders on Sunday afternoon.
Although the female riders will
be competing for trophies, the
professional riders will be
battling for a purse of $5,000
plus contingency awards.
