College football
What tv wants tv gets
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPl)—Television
wasted no time taking over con
trol of college football for this
fall.
And, what television wants,
television gets.
The lure of television gold in
duces the colleges to agree to
just about any proposal.
Saturday’s UCLA-Tennessee
game is one good example.
Monday night’s Notre Dame-
Georgia Tech game is another.
Tennessee originally was
scheduled to play UCLA in Los
Angeles the night of Sept. 14.
Television not only changed the
date and the time (now 4:20
p.m. EDT), but also the site.
The game was moved more
than 2,500 miles to Knoxville,
Tenn.
The reasoning was purely
commercial.
Tennessee coach Bill Battle

He could have told them what a

The Bruins originally were

make that contest on Saturday
the first nationally televised
game of the season, the two
schools decided to move it East

the brutal afternoon heat of Los

aesthetic plane. But, he wound
up lamely admitting that tele
vision dictated the changes.
Georgia Tech, caught in a fi
nancial squeeze partially of its
own doing, needs all the outside
help it can get these days. So
the Yellow Jackets were more
than ready when the Monday
night spot was proposed.
Notre Dame was a bit reluc
tant at first, but gave in. That
game was advanced not a week
but two full months. It had been
set for the afternoon of Nov. 9.
At least, the site (Atlanta) was
unchanged.
The Tennessee-UCLA game
should be a good one. The Vols
hold a 3-1 edge in that series,
having won three straight from
the Bruins since losing their
first meeting, 20-16, but UCLA
boasted the most productive
running game in the country
last fall.
The game marks the debut of
one a couple of years ago, and
television wasn’t even involved
in it.
After his Penn State team
was thumped 31-11 at Knoxville
in the last game of the 1971
season —the Nittany Lions only
defeat —another game was
scheduled with Tennessee to
open ’72.
And somehow, Tennessee
quick-talked some folks at Penn
State into playing the second
game at Knoxville, too.
Tennessee also won that one.
That was the last regular
season game lost by Penn
State.

Pepper Rodgers fans may be
a bit disappointed. Not only will
Georgia Tech be running that

When Rodgers installed the

lost only three home games in
the last seven seasons.
So Knoxville doesn’t figure to
be a comfortable place for Dick
Vermeil to start his career as
UCLA’s new head coach, even
though the Bruins are favored.
“I’m just happy the game is
being played in Knoxville
instead of Los Angeles as

Coach Bill Battle crowed,

another fast one.

Some college coaches have
been complaining about televi

at the fact that they haven’t
gotten in on the gravy train.
They’re upset that television
favors the Notre Dames and the
Alabamas, contending that this
sort of exposure helps those
schools in their recruiting.
“I don’t blame the television
people,” said Georgia coach
Vince Dooley. “They want the
teams that build their ratings.

Thomas
to start
for ’skins
BY JOE CARNICELLI
UPI Sports Writer
This could be an very
interesting night for Duane
Thomas.
Thomas, the moody running
back who’s been in and out of
trouble with several clubs since
starring for Dallas as a rookie
four years ago, was put on
waivers last week by Washing
ton Coach George Allen after
he cursed and shoved a
Redskin assistant coach, Char
ley Waller.
No National Football League
club would take a chance with
the temperamental Thomas but
he finally apologized to Allen,
Waller and the club and asked
for reinstatement.
Allen took him back and
tonight he makes his first
appearance in Washington since
the incident when the Redskins
take on the Baltimore Colts in
the final preseason game for
both clubs.
The Redskins have Larry
Brown, one of the finest
runners in the league, but their
running attack has been flat
ever since Charley Harraway
jumped to Birmingham of the
rival World Football League
after last season. Thomas was
expected to pick up the
blocking slack left by Har
raway’s departure.
The Redskins have won only
one of five preseason games
and hardly look ready to battle
for a playoff spot in the
National Conference East. Bal
timore, on the other hand, isn’t
entertaining any playoff hopes.
The Colts are still in the
rebuilding stage and continue to
shuffle players in and out of
camp. They have won one of
four exhibitions.
In other action tonight, the
New York Giants are at
Buffalo, St. Louis is at Kansas
City and Cincinnati meets
Green Bay at Milwaukee.
The New York Jets meet
Oakland Saturday afternoon in
Berkeley, Calif., and Saturday
night, Cleveland is at Detroit,
New Orleans at Houston, Miami
at Chicago and San Diego at
Minnesota. On Sunday, Los
Angeles is at San Francisco,
Philadelphia at New England
and Atlanta at Denver to wrap
up preseason play.

Rutledge to miss
half of season
By United Press International
Second-ranked Alabama will
be without its top quarterback
for at least half of the 1974
season.
Gary Rutledge, a senior who
was responsible for 14 touch
downs last year, suffered a
shoulder separation in a scrim
mage and underwent surgery
Thursday. Doctors said the
operation went as planned. “We
found no surprises and his
condition is good.”
Rutledge completed 33-of-57

NEW ORLEANS (UPI)-It’s
been a long time since Tulane
was favored to beat Ole Miss
and Tom Fortner intends to
make the most of the situation
Saturday night.
Fortner, a native of Laurel,
Miss., will be Tulane’s starting
flanker when the Greenies open
the 1974 season against Ole Miss
in Sugar Bowl Stadium.
The Rebels are an eight-point
underdog in the game which
should draw 70,000 people if
Hurricane Carmen stays away.
“You’re always a little wor
ried when you’re favored,” said
Fortner, a 6-0 180-pound senior.
“But I think we deserve to be
favorites. I know it gives me
confidence.”
It gave Fortner enough con
fidence that he gladly bought 50
tickets to Saturday’s game for
friends in Mississippi who sent
him the money.
“Yes sir, I want all of my
friends back home to see this
game. I was happy to accom
modate them,” he said with a
smile.
“You know, even though he
won nine games last year —
even though we beat LSU—the
guys back in Laurel still think
of Tulane as the boondocks.
“So you can imagine what an
opportunity this is for someone
who grew up in an Ole Miss
hotbed. I’ve heard nothing but
Ole Miss two-thirds of the time
and Mississippi State the other
third.
