Gallup: either or
WICHITA, Kan. (UPI) — Pollster George Gallup Jr. |
says if Watergate had not eroded public support for
former President Richard Nixon, economic problems
probably would have.
“The high cost of living, which zoomed to the forefront |
I of the public’s chief concerns in the beginning of the 19705, |
is currently regarded by the American people as the
nation’s most serious problem,” said Gallup, who spoke
Friday at Wichita State University.
He said that precedent and an emerging American
preoccupation with domestic problems would have cost |
Nixon points in the polls even if the Watergate scandal had
ss not taken place.

Pell in favor
WASHINGTON (UPI) - Sen. Claiborne Pell, D-R.1.,
1 favors normalization of diplomatic relations with Cuba |
and says one good advantage would be lower prices on
% sugar.
“Personally, I feel we should have more normal
dealings with Cuba,” Pell said Friday. “Normal relations
with Peking and Moscow have been achieved, and they
are Communist powers many miles away from our
shores. We certainly, I should think, be able to afford
normal relations with Cuba.
“One good result might be a reduction in the price of
sugar to housewives.”

[ Kennedy in support
LANSING, Mich. (UPI) — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, D-
Mass., thinks President Ford should be given “a
reasonable period of time” to formulate his economic
| policy so long as he mounts an attack on inflation by the
end of the year.
At an impromptu news conference prior to an appear
| ance before a state AFL-CIO convention, Kennedy said
| the feeling in Congress was that “we’re in a period of
I serious economic recession and inflation and we’re ready
to support the President.”
Gamble convicted
SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) — Millionarie George Gamble,
36, a great-grandson of the cofounder of the Proctor &
Gamble soap empire, was convicted Friday on charges of
bringing into California an illegally killed big horn sheep
and elk.
U.S. District Court Judge Robert F. Peckham handed
down the decision after a nonjury trial which began Aug.
| 27. He set Sept. 30 for sentencing.
Gamble, owner of a 15,000-acre rach in Napa County,
| Calif., was found guilty of bringing into the state a Rocky
Mountain big horn sheep killed in September, 1968, on a
Crow Indian reservation in Montana.
