part in determining the outcome,
and Dye is contemplating a de
mand for a statewide recount.
An elections division spokes
man said returns from 143 of
Georgia’s 159 counties had been
certified. Voter registrars in the
other 16 counties had their re
turns in the mail by Friday
night, the division said.
Mrs. Frances Duncan, the
chief of the elections division,
said the state has received nu
merous complaints from county
elections officers who have been
bombarded with protests from
the irate absentee voters who
have found the mails too slow
for their ballots.
There were three weeks be
tween the first primary Aug. 13
and the runoff primary last
Tuesday. Mrs. Duncan said the
first of those weeks was spent
in certifying the statewide vote,
then ballots for the runoff were
mailed out.
Either by being out of town,
or taking a while to decide
i whom to vote for in the runoffs,
many voters did not get their
ballots in the mail in time to be
counted Tuesday. Absentee bal
lots arriving after the election
are not counted, under state
law.
Mrs. Duncan said she would
like at least one more week be
tween primaries because under
the current arrangement, “by
the time the first primary is
certified, you’ve already lost one
week of the three weeks” be
tween primaries.
Horse tumble suit filed
LOS ANGELES (UPI) - A
Santa Monica, Calif., couple
filed a $50,000 suit against a
Las Vegas hotel Friday, claim
ing they were injured when a
horse tumbled onto their table
during a night club stage show.
The horse was one of two
steeds that charged across the
stage of a Stardust Hotel
showroom as part of a joust
between two performers
dressed as medieval knights,
the suit said.
Jack and Donella Frost
claimed in the Superior Court
suit that one of the riders fell
from his mount, and the horse
fell onto their table.
The Frosts said the incident
occurred last Sept. 8 in the
Continental showroom of the
Stardust.
The suit seeks $25,000 each
for the Frosts, $1,500 in
damages to personal effects
and property and an undeter
mined amount for medical
care, lost income and other
costs.
