run. It gave Griffin its first first down. Central of Macon beat Griffin, 28-8.
Central stops Griffin, 28*6
Central of Macon showed here
last night that their high rating
in triple-A prep circles is
deserved.
The Chargers, one of the
biggest and most experienced
football teams around, pounded
out a 28-6 victory over the
Griffin Bears before a large
crowd at Memorial Stadium.
The score was close until
Central broke open the game
late in the third quarter.
Although Griffin had trouble
with its offense, the defense
played well in the first half,
especially when the Chargers
were in a threatening position.
Central’s defense kept Griffin
bottled up. The Bears’ ground
game, except for one play that
saw Mike Head romp 54 yards
for a touchdown, was stopped
cold.
The Chargers’ huge line also
stopped Griffin’s passing game
by not allowing quarterback

Mack Guest, 6-4, 238 pounds,
David Taylor, 6-2 239 pounds
and Troy Jordan, 248 pounds,
anchored the solid Central
defense.
The Chargers played around
Griffin's goal but had only
seven points to show for their
first half effort.
The Bears struck for six
points the first time they went
on offense in the second half.
Central took the second half
kickoff and after picking up a
first down, Griffin’s defense
forced a punt.
Randy Cooper returned it to
the Griffin 46.
On the first play from
scrimmage, Mike Head took a
handoff from Jordan and behind
picture blocking broke into the
open and raced 54 yards for a
touchdown.
The extra point was missed,
leaving Central with a 7-6 lead.
Griffin won the toss and
elected to take the opening
kickoff.
After Johnny Roberts made
five yards on the first snap,
Griffin was thrown for a three
yard loss.
Jordan found daylight and
rambled 25 yards for a first
down.
Two successive plays cost
Griffin 14 yards and Roberts
gained seven before Joe
McGee’s punt rolled dead at
Central’s 31.
Running backs Curtis Wiley,
Wincell Rutherford, Walter Hall
and quarterback Mike Jolly
followed up great blocking to
gain four first downs to the
Griffin seven.
From there, two running
plays and a pass gained Central
just three yards. Jolly was
dropped for a five yard loss on
the fourth and Griffin took over
deep in its own territory.
Griffin picked up a first down
on a penalty before McGee
punted to the Central 30.
Central’s offense stormed
back, picking up four first
downs to the Griffin 14.
Two running plays from there
netted the Chargers seven
yards. Central was penalized
five yards before a field goal
attempt missed.

ATLANTA (UPI) - John
D’Acquisto is the pitcher the
Atlanta Braves call the hardest
thrower in the National League.
The 22-year-old rookie also is
the brightest spot in an
otherwise dismal season for the
San Francisco Giants.
D’Acquisto won his 11th game
of the season—he has lost 12—
and pitched his first major
league shutout Friday night as
the Giants beat the Braves 2-0.
“My concentration was there
from beginning to end,” D’Ac
quisto said. ”At the beginning

The kick was short and
Central was in business at the
Griffin 37.
The Chargers marched the 37
yards in four plays for the go
ahead touchdown.
Rutherford picked up one
yard. Jolly gained 11 before
passing 15 yards to Walter Hall.
Curtis Wiley scored from the
eight yard line.
Taylor kicked the extra point
and Central led 7-0 with just
over two minutes to go in the
first half.
Griffin drove to Central’s 39
before losing the ball on downs.
The first half ended after
Central picked up a first down.
Griffin appeared to be fired
up after the halftime rest.
Central took the kickoff and
picked up only one first down
before being forced into a
punting situation by the Griffin
defense and a 15 yard penalty.
Cooper returned the punt to
the Griffin 46 and it was at that
point that Head followed good
blocking and outran Central’s
defensive backfield on a 54 yard
TD jaunt.
of the season, it was my
biggest problem but now it’s
my biggest asset.”
The young right-hander has
made typical rookie mistakes
this year but he has managed
to overcome them. He would
lose his concentration early in
the season and sometimes he
would get excited.
“I kept an even head tonight.
I kept my poise and I didn’t get
excited,” he said. “I kept in
control the entire last game,
too.”
D’Acquisto beat St. Louis 3-2
in his last start before Friday
The PAT was missed. Central
led 7-6 with a little over seven
minutes to go in the third
period.
Griffin’s touchdown ap
parently shook up the Chargers.
It took Central just four plays
to score again. The touchdown
play was a 40 yard run by
Walter Hall.
The extra point was missed,
leaving Central with a 13-6 lead.
Griffin took the kickoff and
picked up one first down before
the offense bogged down under
the tremendous Central
defense.
Central began its third touch
down drive at its 26.
The drive took 10 plays with
Jolly scoring from the one early
in the fourth period.
Jolly passed to Rutherford for
two points, giving Macon a 21-6
lead.
Central’s final TD was scored
late in the fourth. Rutherford
got it on a two yard plunge.
The extra point kick was
good.
The opening game was
unusual in one respect. There
wasn’t a turnover by either
quarter action. The ball was tipped at the line of
scrimmage and fell incomplete.
night’s shutout.
”He’s been improving right
along, game by game,” Manag
er Wes Westrum said of the
curly-haired flame-thrower.
“For a rookie, he’s great. Just
great.”
Rowland Office, also a rookie,
singled for Atlanta in the first
inning and doubled in the third.
They were the only hits allowed
by D’Acquisto during the first
eight innings.

ninth when Marty Perez led off

team.
One official remarked at
halftime about how well
prepared both teams were.
He was also impressed by the
size of the Central squad,
especially its interior linemen.
The loss was a non-region one
for the Bears who now face a
tough Region 6-AAA schedule.
That schedule begins next
Friday at Rockdale County.
Central, which has won 48 of
its last 50 regular season
games, faces Douglas County.
Mike Head was Griffin’s
leading ground gainer last
night. He had 68 yards on six
carries.
Willie Jordan picked up 21
yards on 14 carries.
Curtis Wiley gained 128 yards
for Central on 15 snaps.
Rutherford had 69 yards on 14
carries and Jolly had 64 on 13
runs.
Greg Head made 11 tackles
for Griffin and Phillip McCrary,
who plays in the Bears’
secondary, had eight.
David Taylor made eight
tackles for Central.
D’Acquisto worked the count to
three-and-two on Dave Johnson
and then struck him out with a
curve ball.
“It was a big curve—it was a
dandy,” said catcher Dave
Rader.
Johnson stood at the plate as
though he could not believe the
ball. D’Acquisto admitted that
the pitch was close.
“It was an either-or pitch. It
could have gone either way,”
he said. “I’m sure glad it went
my way.”

SONICS FREE RAHMAN
SEATTLE, Wash. (UPI) -
Mahdi Abdul-Rahman, a 10-
year veteran of the National
Basketball Association who
started out as Walt Hazzard,
became a free agent Friday
when the Seattle Supersonics
failed to offer him a new
contract.
Bob Walsh, Sonics’ assistant
general manager, said it had
not been determined whether
Rahman would be invited to
Seattle’s training camp which
opens Sept. 19 in Port Angeles.
Seattle Coach Bill Russell has
said Rahman probably would
face a difficult time making
this year’s team. The Sonics’
top three guards are veteran
Fred Brown, second-year man
Slick Watts and Archie Clark,
recently acquired from the
Washington Bullets.
