r Rockdale next
for Griffin Bears
The non-region season is over
for the Griffin Bears.
It began and ended last
Friday with a 28-6 loss to
Central of Macon.
The next nine games are in
Region 6-AAA competition.
League play begins Friday.
The Bears travel to Rockdale
County to play the Bulldogs,
who opened the season with a
victory over Cedar Shoals.
Rockdale had a 7-3 record last
year, the same as Griffin. One
of Rockdale’s losses was to
Griffin.
The Bulldogs had an im
pressive opener. Cedar Shoals
was 8-2 a year ago and was
expected to have a good team
again this season.

* ATLANTA (UPI) — Georgia
Tech’s new head football coach
Pepper Rodgers is the eternal
optimist.
* Rodgers makes his coaching
debut at his alma mater (class
of *54) tonight, sending his
, apparently outmanned Yellow
r Jackets against mighty Notre
Dame in a rarity —a nationally
televised (ABC, 9 p.m. EDT)
f Monday night college game.
Rodgers knows that the
heavily favored Irish have the
edge in talent, experience and
* size, but he still talks about
Georgia Tech’s chances for an
upset.
“Maybe we can’t beat Notre
Dame,” said Rodgers, head
coach at Kansas and UCLA
before succeeding Bill Fulcher
/ at Tech last winter, “but they
can lose to us.”
That, echoes Notre Dame
Coach Ara Parseghian, is a
i concern.
“We don’t know a great deal
about Tech’s personnel since
we didn’t play them last year
* or see them play,” said
Parseghian. ”We do know that
Pepper Rodgers has produced
I some outstanding teams whe
rever he’s coached. He’s done a
remarkable job with the wish
bone offense.”
k What Parseghian does know
can’t have him too concerned.

here.
The Bears made only seven
first downs and 111 total yards.
Griffin had 85 yards rushing and
26 passing.
Central made 22 first downs
and 415 total yards.
However, it wasn’t until
midway of the third period that
Central broke up what was until
then a close score.
Central scored a TD in the
first half and Griffin scored in
the third period. Central led 7-6
until its second TD came with
just over six minutes left in the
third.
Griffin’s defense played well
in the first half. The Chargers

His team, 1-0 last year
including a Sugar Bowl victory
over Alabama, has 14 starters
and 3 second teamers back.
Georgia Tech was 5-6, returned
only nine starters, and must go
tonight with a second-string
quarterback.
Danny Myers, a former
defensive back selected by
Rodgers to run the Tech
wishbone, sprained an ankle in
a scrimmage last week and has
been replaced by Rudy Allen
(No. 9), a junior who failed to
letter last season.
Also, the Yellow Jackets are
starting two sophomores, David
Sims (No. 46) and Pat Moriarty
(No. 44) at running backs.
Notre Dame, even with Erick
Penick shelved by an ankle
injury, has a proven offensive
backfield with Tome Clements
(No. 2) at quarterback, Art
Best (No. 23) and Al Samuel
(No. 24) at halfbacks and 220-
pound Wayne Bullock (No. 30),
at fullback.
Bullock (752 yards) and Best
(700) were Notre Dame’s top
two rushers last season while
Samuel, who moved up from
second team to fill Penick’s
slot, topped all three in average
gain with 6.7 yards per clip.
Tech lost its top three
runners from last year.
Tonight’s meeting is the 23rd
between Notre Dame and

Griffin survived the game
without any major injuries.
“We knew they had a good
team,” Coach Max Dowis said
this morning.
“I thought our kids gave a
good effort in some spots. We
didn’t do too well in others,” the
coach said.
“I feel we got some good out
of the game. What we must do
now is get our heads up and get
ready for Rockdale,” he said.
Coach Dowis said that scout
reports show Rockdale has a
good team.
The Bulldogs probably will be
fired up for the game. Griffin
defeated them last season on
their home field. It may have
been Rockdale’s last loss.
Georgia Tech. The Irish lead
the series, which began in 1922,
19-3. Tech’s last win, 14-10, at
South Bend, came in 1959.
Notre Dame has won their last
four contests but had a tough
time pulling out a 10-7 decision
when they last met (in Atlanta)
in 1970.
Marshall calls

By FRED McMANE
UPI Sports Writer
Mike Marshall had his
integrity and pride put to the
ultimate test Sunday and came
out a winner on both counts.
Marshall, the ace relief
pitcher of the Los Angeles
Dodgers, had his integrity
tested by manager Walter
Alston during a five-minute
pregame meeting behind the
locked doors of the Los Angeles
clubhouse prior to the Dodgers’
game with the Cincinnati Reds.
It seems Marshall had been
quoted in a local paper as
saying the Cincinnati Reds
were a bunch of “high school
athletes.” Alston, concerned
that such statements might rile
the Reds into playing even
harder, wanted to know if
Marshall had made the state-

teams were losers.
Dalton, the No. 9 team, lost
to Rossville in a 7-6 squeaker
and No. 10 West Rome was
beaten 35-6 by Lakeshore.
All the other teams in the
top ten won except Valdosta,
which does not open its season
until Friday night.
Thomasville rambled over Tif
ton County 40-0 and Wheeler
easily beat Osborne 28-3.
No. 3 Lakeside, down by one
point at halftime, came back
with a field goal in the second
half to defeat tough Henderson
9-7.
Central Macon, the No. 4
team, looked strong in downing
Griffin 28-6.

ment. Marshall called the
statement “a lie” and that was
good enough for Alston. Case
closed.
Marshall also got a chance to
heal his pride, which had been
severely wounded Saturday
when the Reds pinned him with
the loss after rallying from a
five-run deficit to win 7-5. His
opportunity came in the eighth
inning when he bailed the
Dodgers out of a jam and went
on to preserve a 7-4 triumph
that increased Los Angeles’
lead over Cincinnati in the
National League West to 3 %
games.
Pete Rose had led off the
Reds’ eighth with a homer off
reliever Charlie Hough and Joe
Morgan had walked when
Marshall entered the game.
Making a major league record
93rd relief appearance, Mar
shall retired the dangerous
Johnny Bench on a line drive to
right and got Tony Perez to
bounce into an inning-ending
double play. The Dodger
righthander then struck out the
side in the ninth to preserve the
win for Doug Rau.
The victory was the Dodgers’
11th in 15 games with the Reds,
but the two clubs still have
three games to play at Los
Angeles next weekend, so
neither team was ready to
claim victory in the tight
division race.
In other NL games, Pitts

Vic Correll drove in three
runs with a double and a single
to lead the Braves over the
Giants. Ron Reed went the
distance to register his 10th
win. Gary Matthews had a
homer for San Francisco.
Phillies 11, Cubs 10
Willie Montanez drove in four
runs with three hits to spark
the Phillies’ triumph over the
Cubs. Jerry Morales hit a
grand slam homer for the Cubs
while Rick Monday had a solo
shot.
Astros 3, Padres 2
Rookie Wilbur Howard hit his
first major league homer in the
seventh inning to give the
Astros a victory over the
Padres. Howard’s blast was one
of only four hits the Astros
managed off lefthander Randy
Jones, who also became a 20-
game loser.
Warner Robins, No. 8, took a
24-12 victory over Clarke Cen
