He says ease credit
ATLANTA (UPI) - David
Rockefeller, chairman of The
Chase Manhattan Bank, urged
the Federal Reserve Board to
day to ease its curbs on credit
in an effort to revitalize the de
pressed housing industry.
In his prepared speech to the
NationalCorrespondentßanking
Conference of the American
Bankers Association, Rocke
feller said that too much
reliance had been placed on
solving economic ills through
tight controls on monetary
policy.
As a result, the nation had
been hit with “soaring interest
rates with resulting severe dis
ruptions in housing construction,
public utilities and other indus
tries,” he said.
“It is clear that monetary re
straint must continue, that we
cannot return quickly to a peri
od of easy money. And yet inter
est rates have reached a point
where they promise to do posi
tive harm if relief is not soon
provided.”
Rockefeller said he hoped the
Federal Reserve Board would
“now feel justified in releasing
its pressure on credit expansion
thereby permitting rates to
move down to a somewhat low
er level.

Answered prayer?
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif.
(UPI) — It may have been just
plain luck that kept Evel
Knieval from splashing into the
Snake River.
On the other hand, while the
daredevil cyclist was on his
way down, he may have had a
little help from way up.
Four-year-old David Bacon
was asked Sunday to say the
closing prayer before the
congregation of the Agoura
Ward of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints
(Mormon).
He said simply: “Heavenly
Father, thank you for all our
blessings, and we pray Evel
Knievel doesn’t crash into th<*
water. Amen.”

Monkey business
SPRINGFIELD, DI. (UPI) -
A trio of chimpanzeess, armed
with paint and paintbrushes,
led sheriffs deputies on a
three-hour chase during the
weekend but were finally
corralled before they could
paint the town red —or any
other color.
The chimps escaped from
their cages in a Springfield
home Saturday and managed to
get their hands on the brushes
and several cans of paint.
Sangamon County deputies,
carrying brooms and other
battle gear, were soon in hot
pursuit.
One of the monkeys took a
swipe at a broom and knocked
it from a deputy’s hand. That
challenge to law and order was
quickly met, however, and the
chimps were captured and
returned to their cages.
