Protest building
•S WASHINGTON (UPI) — Protest against President
Ford’s pardon of Richard M. Nixon is building and
reaching the intensity of that following the former
president’s firing of Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox.
S A White House spokesman said telegrams, at the rate of
about 700 an hour, were running 5 to 1 against Ford’s
action. “The ultimate cover-up of Watergate may be
taking place,” Sen. Walter F. Mondale, D-Minn., said,
referring also to an agreement to give Nixon control over
his White House tapes.
Jury may act
WASHINGTON (UPI) — The foreman of the grand jury
that implicated former President Nixon in the Watergate
S coverup said Monday the jurors are considering whether
they can release some of the damaging evidence.
Foreman Vladimir Pregelj said he felt “left up the creek”
by the pardoning of Nixon.
Terhorst is columnist
WASHIGNTON (UPI) — J.F. terHorst resumed work
:• today with the Detroit News as a columnist. TerHorst,
•J who was President Ford’s press secretary for 31 days,
:• resigned Sunday in protest of the Nixon pardon. He also
said White House aides had lied to him, but “I didn’t quit
•: because I was lied to.”
Deserter plan delayed
■: WASHINGTON (UPI) — President Ford has put off
announcing his plan for leniency for draft evaders and
■: military deserters, apparently waiting for the
controversy over the pardon to settle down. He had
:• planned to disclose his plan today. Deputy Press
:• Secretary John W. Hushen, announcing the
•: postponement, gave no new date for the announcement.
Autoihatic system failed
■j HOUSTON (UPI) — The head of Soviet cosmonaut
training said Monday the failure of Soyuz 15 and the
Salyut space station to link up last month was caused by
failure of an automatic rendezvous and docking system.
Vladimir Shatalov said the system had not been tested
$ since 1968. Western experts had believed a loss of power
prevented the docking. Two Russian spacemen ended
their flight early because of the failure.
