School night
for Cubs set
September 24
Bob Glover, chairman of the
Towaliga District, Boy Scouts of
America announced a school
night for Cub Scouting. It will be
held in all elementary schools in
Spalding County on Sept. 24.

Robert Langford say the pur
pose of school night is to give all
boys between the ages of 8 and
10 the opportunity to join the
free worlds largest youth
organization.
Parents interested in their
son’s becoming a Cub are en
couraged to bring him to the
school in their neighborhood. An
invitation will be extended to all
boys through the school he
attends.
The following men along with
the unit leaders will be in all
elementary schools throughout
Spalding County to enroll boys
in Cub Scouting:

The Jackson Road School
PTO met Tuesday night for the
September meeting. Henry
Fullilove, president, presided.
Mr. Fullilove introduced the

Mrs. Gladys Hardin
welcomed the new teachers,
first graders and parents.
Miss Bertha Cunard, a
member of the Griffin Pilot
Club, gave a demonstration on
ways that children’s clothing
and bikes can be made safer by
using reflecting tape.
The school will hold a candy
sale the week of Sept. 18. The
group voted to have a fall
festival Oct. 26.
Following the meeting,
refreshments were served.
Mrs. A. L. McKneely’s first
grade won the grade count.

workshop
planned
BARNESVILLE—The Office
of Community Services at
Gordon Junior College is
sponsoring a newspaper
workshop for high school
students on Sept. 27 from 8:30
a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Six newsmen will instruct
high school newspaper staffs in
feature, news, and sports
writing; photography; selling
ads; printing costs; and layout
design.
Assisting students will be
Ellis Pope, sports writer for the
Macon Telegraph; Wendell
Tidwell, new associate editor of
the Upson Independent News;
David Foster, area
correspondent for the Atlanta
Journal; Leon Smith, editor of
the Thomaston Times-Free
Press; Bill Knight, executive
editor of the Griffin Daily
News; and Jerry McLaurin of
the Jackson Progress-Argus.

Woodard Infant
Graveside services for Little
Miss Angela Dianne Woodard,
infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Woodard of Morrow,
were conducted this morning at
11 o’clock in Griffin Memorial
Gardens. The Rev. Allen
Huckaby officiated.
The infant died Tuesday at
the Griffin-Spalding Hospital.
McDonald Chapel was in
charge of arrangements.
Mr. Stephenson
Mr. James Henry Sephenson
of 1003 Skyline drive died early
this morning at the Living
Center of Griffin where he had
been a patient for the past 15
months.
Mr. Stephenson was a native
of Henry County, son of the late
John Thomas Stephenson and
the late Ann Conkle Stephenson.
He had made his home in
Griffin for 61 years where he
was employed with Wheaton
and Co., Will Hill Newton Co.,
and was retired from Holmes
Brothers. Mr. Stephenson was a
member of the Midway United
Methodist Church and a
member of the Men’s Sunday
School Class of the First United
Methodist Church. He had also
served on the Griffin School
Board of Education.
He is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. Jimmy
Stephenson Leverette and Mrs.
Reath Stephenson Edwards; a
son, John Q. Stephenson, all of
Griffin; four sisters, Mrs. Oma
S. Henderson, Mrs. Harvey
Ponder, both of Hampton, Mrs.
Martha Knight of Griffin and
Mrs. Henry Wallace of Macon;
three grandchildren, three
great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at 3
o’clock in the chapel of Pittman
Rawls Funeral Home. The Rev.
Randy Healan will officiate and
burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. The body will remain
at the funeral home.
Baptist budget
$7.4-million
ATLANTA,—The Georgia
Baptist Convention Executive
Committee has approved a
budget of $7,475,000 for 1975. The
budget, to be presented to the
Georgia Baptist Convention
annual session in November for
final approval, will be divided
equally between Georgia and
Southern Baptist Convention
ministries.
Dr. Searcy S. Garrison,
Atlanta, Executive Secretary-
Treasurer of the convention,
reported that Cooperative
Program gifts for the months
January - August, were 4.9 per
cent higher than the same
period in 1973.
In other action, the Executive
Committee:
Approved a tentative
calendar of activities for 1975;
Gave approval to a proposed
change in the Convention’s
Constitution;
Recommended that trustees

of values
planned
Griffin merchants will have
their annual Harvest of Values
event Oct. 3-5 under sponsorship
of the Chamber of Commerce.
Plans for the promotion
already are under way.
Annually the special days
attract thousands of shoppers to
the Griffin area.

Mrs. Stanton
Mrs. Florence Stanton of 211
Laramie road died unexpected
ly Wednesday at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital of an ap
parent heart seizure.
Mrs. Stanton, a native of
Macon, was the widow of Mr.
Clarence Hayden Stanton, Sr.
She had made her home in
Griffin for five years with her
daughter and son-in-law, Dr.
and Mrs. Robert E. Flanders.
In addition to Mrs. Flanders,
survivors include another
daughter, Mrs. Lawrence
Schall of Kenosha, Wis.; two
sons, the Rev. John R. Stanton
of Newport News, Va., and
Clarence H. Stanton, Jr., of
Macon; eight grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock from the St. James
Episcopal Church in Macon
where she was a member. The
Rev. William Douglas Winn of
Griffin and the Rev. Robert
Gibson of Macon will officiate
and burial will be in Riverside
cemetery in Macon. Harts
Mortuary of Macon is in charge
of plans.

A report concerning the
Education Extension Program;
a phase of the State Missions
program, was presented. This
program became a part of the
State Missions ministry earlier
this year. In operation for 25
years, the program has been
funded by the Cooperative
Program. It is now a phase of
the State Missions ministry of
the Georgia Baptist Convention
and is administered by the
Education Division of the
Executive Committee.
Dr. William Clinton, Bremen,
chairman of the Executive
Committee, and presiding of
ficer, was authorized to appoint
a State Missions Budget
Committee for 1975.
Vandals hit
pulp truck
Sheriff’s officers were looking
for vandals who extensively
damaged a pulpwood truck and
stole a number of tools from the
vehicle.
Emerson Berry of Route
Three, Jackson, the owner,
complained both headlights, the
speedometer glass, and turn
signal lights were broken, cans
of break fluid had been poured
out, and the ignition key, along
with several tools, were taken.
The truck was parked at Pine
Glenn Trailer Park, off Ga. 16
East, he said.
The Sheriff’s Department
also investigated the theft of a
pay phone from the Orchard
Hill Pool Room.
Andy Craft, the operator,
reported someone pried the
back off a side door to enter the
building and took the pay
telephone which was inside the
pool room.
Judge McGehee to hear
arguments on banishment
A hearing is scheduled
tomorrow in Thomaston before
Judge Emeritus John H.
McGhee for an Upson County
man who is seeking to have his
August 1973 sentence of being
banished from the state of
Georgia declared illegal.
Jay V. Dean, 64, who formerly
ran the Midway Truck Stop in
Thomaston, pleaded guilty to
charges of selling liquor,
possessing non-tax paid
cigarettes and violating the
‘Seniors’
view film

woman’s clubhouse for the

Act last August. He was sen
tenced by Judge Andrew
Whalen, Jr. of the Griffin
Judicial Circuit to fines totaling
$4,000 and four years probation.
Dean pleaded guilty on the
basis of his getting a probated
sentence and agreed to the
conditions placed on the proba
tion that he immediately close
his business, that he turn the
keys over to Atty. Ronald Bar
field of Thomaston who would
then sell all of Dean’s property
for a reasonable price, and that
Dean move outside the state for
the duration of his sentence,
according to Upson Superior
Court Clerk Edward Price.
Dean’s property has never
been disposed of.
Dean’s attorney, Bobby Hill
of Savannah, termed the sen
tence “not only unusual, but
steeped in antiquity.”
The Georgia Supreme Court
ruled in another case this week
Susan Jones
in student book
Susan Jones, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Grady R. Jones, 620
East Mclntosh road, has been
named to Who’s Who Among
American High School Students
honors publication in 1973-74.
She will be featured in the
eight annual publication of the
book.
She is in the choir of Faith
Baptist Church and is vice
president of the Candy Stripers.
Her Science Fair project won
second place.
ABC-Ettes hold
monthly meet
The ABC-Ettes held their
regular monthly meeting at the
Bonanza Hayloft. Mrs. Patti
Ford, president, presided.
Mrs. Ford spoke on the goals
of the club and outlined civic
projects which the members
will sponsor.
The group voted to make a
contribution to the support of
the Golden Age Club.
Plans were made for the
monthly visit to patients in the
Living Center.

that while banishment from
certain counties within the state
is constitutional, banishment
from the state itself is expressly
prohibited by the state constitu
tion.
Dean now lives in Phenix
City, Ala., and contends he was
falsely arrested, forced to plead
guilty and forced to agree to the
conditions of his sentence. He
said the charges against him
were “all untrue” and he en
tered the guilty plea to keep
from being “put on the chain
gang”.
Man shot;
one charged
A Spalding County man,
identified as Milton Landers, 30,
of Route Five, Box 461, is in St.
Joseph Infirmary today
recovering from gunshot
wounds he suffered during an
altercation at a Winsor drive
residence last night.
Sheriff Dwayne Gilbert said
Varnell Frederick Durham, 39,
of the Winsor drive, Route Five
address, has been charged with
the shooting in a state warrant
taken by Mrs. Linda Landers,
wife of the wounded man.
Durham is being held in the
Spalding County jail during an
investigation by Investigator
Sgt. Richard Cantrell. Sgt.
Tommy Whaley answered the
initial call, the sheriff said.
Landers was shot in the ab
domen and hip, apparently with
a shotgun. He was rushed to the
Griffin-Spalding Hospital and
after treatment there, was
transferred to St. Joseph.
The incident occurred around
8:30 p.m.
Youth charged
in drug case
Sheriff’s deputies arrested a
17-year-old yesterday and
charged him with violation of
the Georgia Substance Act
when a number of pills were
found in an unmarked container
in his possession.
He was identified as Ronald
Terry Fouts of East Mclntosh
road. He was released under a
SI,OOO security bond.
