Bears to stun
Rockdale, 19*6
By AMOS B. HOOPLE
Football Expert
Egads, friends.
The Griffin Bears charged
into the Chargers here last
Friday and bounced off the
beefy brutes from Bibb.
Your fearless prognosticator
picked the Bears in an upset.
My colleagues had pointed out
that Macon Central was heavily
favored but my male intuition
told me Griffin would win.
That’s the last time I’ll depend
on intuition. From now on we’ll
leave that sort of stuff to the
female forecasters, hummph.
Griffin has a tough game
coming up Friday night in
Rockdale County.
It will be played on Friday,
the 13th of September.
Nearly everyone knows that
Friday the 13th is unlucky.
However, hardly anyone knows,
except yours truly and a few
trusted followers, that Friday
the 13th only affects a few foot
ball teams. Griffin is not one of
them.

It wouldn’t be surprising,
though, to see some teams
trying to ward off the 13th hex
by wearing their helmets back
wards or throwing salt tablets
over their left shoulder, haff
gaff.
Griffin will not do any of that
because the Bears know Friday,
Sept. 13 is not an unlucky day.
The real unlucky one is Friday,
Dec. 13 and that date is 12 weeks
away, hummph.
Enough about the calendar,
let’s get on with the football
forecast.
My scouts compiled reems of
information on the Rockdale
Bulldogs.
The bobbed tailed canines
from Conyers opened the 1974
season with a victory over
Cedar Shoals.
Cedar Shoals couldn’t stop
Rockdale’s Alabama-type wish
bone and was overmatched.
Griffin will not be outclassed,
according to my reliable
reports.
The bad Bears are hungry for
victory. They were denied one a
week ago and it made them a
little meaner, hummph.
Coach Max Dowis discovered
a few flaws in Griffin’s attack
while trying to subdue those big
brutes from Bibb.
The problems were solved in
practice this week and Griffin
will be at peak strength against
Rockdale.
Griffin and Rockdale are
equal in size and numbers.
The Bears’ advantage is
quickness. So, what do you do
when you have an advantage?
You use it, of course.
The Griffin Bears will out
quick Rockdale to the tune of 19-
7.
Hampton
to miss
game
ATLANTA (UPI) - The
Atlanta Falcons’ top running
back, Dave Hampton, probably
will miss the season opener
against the Dallas Cowboys
Sunday in Atlanta Stadium.
Hampton reinjured his thigh
in a workout several days ago
and was hospitalized Tuesday
when the muscle hemorrhaged.
“It looks very doubtful I
could play,” Hampton said
Wednesday. “I’ll probably be
here (hospital) a couple more
days and that’s too long in the
hospital to think I could be
ready Sunday.”
Coach Norm Van Brocklin is
expected to replace Hamton
with Molly McGee or Haskel
Stanback, both rookies who
were impressive in preseason
I games.

Trades helmet
HOUSTON—Soviet cosmonaut Aleksy Leonov trades in
his space helmet for a football helmet during visit
yesterday to the WFL game here between the Houston
Texas and the Hawilans. At bottom he clowns with fellow
spaceman Anotoly Filipchenko. The cosmonauts are in
training at the Johnson Space Center for the joint US
USSR space flight in 1975. (UPI)
Cincy, Braves
game called
CINCINNATI (UPI) - Pat
Darcy was a very surprised
young man when he awoke
today and learned he is to face
the Atlanta Braves in the
second game of a doubleheader.
“I would have told him last
night but if I did, I’m sure he
wouldn’t have slept a wink,”
said Reds Manager Sparky
Anderson.
A torrential downpour ended
Wednesday night’s game after
five innings with the score tied
1-1 and forced Anderson to alter
his pitching plans.
The rain came after Atlanta
knucklebailer Phil Niekro
struck out Johnny Bench with
the bases loaded to end the fifth
inning.
And it was still pouring two
hours and 17 minutes later
when Doug Harvey, crew chief
of the umpiring team, an
nounced there would be no
further play. Because of the tie,
a doubleheader was scheduled
for today starting 2:30 p.m.
(EDT).
Tom Carroll, Anderson’s
original choice for tonight’s
game, will pitch the opener
against Lew Krausse. The 24-
year-old Darcy, one of five
players recalled Tuesday from
the Indianapolis farm club, will
start the second game against
Ron Reed.
After the doubleheader, the
Reds will then head for Los
Angeles, where they will open a
three-game weekend series with
the Dodgers Friday night.

Tide favored
over Terrapins
ATLANTA (UPI) — The Ala
bama Crimson Tide, favored to
post its third perfect season in
four years, opens its 1974 cam
paign with a tough test Satur
day.
'hie Tide visits the Maryland
Terrapins, a club on the up
swing that is expected to domi
nate the Atlantic Coast Confer
ence this fall and give the ACC
its first top-10 ranking since the
Terps were there in the middle
’sos.
“When we originally sched
uled Maryland, we looked on it
as a trip for our players,” said
Alabama Coach Bear Bryant.
“But Maryland has come a long
way since then. (Terps coach)
Jerry Claiborne has 19 starters
back from a team that won
eight games last year. Now,
we’re going up there to win the
game.”
All but two of the Southeast
ern Conference teams, Tennes
see and Mississippi State, and
all but one of the South’s major
independents, Miami, see action
Saturday.

Maryland prepares
for overflow crowd
By CHRIS SCHERF
UPI Sports Writer
It was only a couple years
ago that the best way to avoid
the traffic jam leaving Univer
sity of Maryland football games
was to stay until the final
whistle.
Only the bravest could endure
a full 60 minutes of Terrapins’
football and the mass exodus
began at some point in the
third quarter.
But in those days, the masses
only numbered approximately
15,000.
For Saturday’s season opener
against Paul “Bear” Bryant
and second-ranked Alabama,
Maryland has erected as many
temporary seats as possible to
accomodate an overflow crowd
in excess of 50,000.
The renewed interest in
Maryland football is the result
of the wonders worked by
Coach Jerry Claiborne.
But beating ‘Barna more
properly might fall into the
category of a miracle.
Nonetheless, the College Park
campus is vibrant with hope,
rekindled by last season’s
success, its No. 11 rating this
year and the return of last
year’s starting lineup virtually
intact, including standout defen
sive tackle Randy White.
And on the positive side,
Alabama will be without the
services of its first-string
quarterback, Gary Rutledge,
sidelined by injury.
In another matchup of ranked
squads, No. 18 Stanford travels
to seventh-ranked Penn State
for a nationally televised
contest.
The Nittany Lions, 12-0 last
season, have been hit hard by
graduation, including Heisman
Trophy winner John Cappellet
ti. But Coach Joe Patemo
grows his talent wild in the
hills surrounding University
at Virginia Tech, and Vanderbilt
hosts Chattanooga.
Saturday night, Auburn plays
Louisville at Birmingham, Lou
isiana State hosts Colorado, Ole
Miss plays Missouri in Jackson,
Florida State hosts Pitt, Geor
gia Tech hosts South Carolina,
Memphis State hosts Southern
Mississippi, Tampa hosts Tole
do, and Tulane hosts Southwest
ern Louisiana.
A handful of Southeast teams
opened last weekend. Tennessee
tied UCLA, 17-17; Mississippi
State beat William & Mary, 49-
7; Memphis State beat Louis
ville, 16-10; and Tampa beat
Chattanooga, 28-0. Monday
night, Georgia Tech lost to No
tre Dame, 31-7.
Ole Miss and Tulane were
scheduled to play last Saturday
but postponed that game be
cause of an approaching hurri
cane. The game is expected to
be played Nov. 30 —the first Sat
urday both have an open date.
Alabama, loser of only one
regular season game in three
seasons and favored to win a
record fourth straight SEC
crown, is favored over Mary
land but will be playing without
Park and always manages to
find September replacements
for June graduates.
Stanford, meanwhile, can
counter with defensive ends Pat
Donovan and Roger Stillwell,
both strong All-American can
didates.
Top-ranked Ohio State opens
on the road for the first time in
80 years at Minnesota, while
the Buckeyes’ fifth-ranked Big
Ten rival Michigan hosts lowa.
Fourth-rated Southern Cali
fornia meets Arkansas in a
night game at Little Rock; No.
6 Nebraska plays host to
Oregon; No. 8 Texas is at

Gary Rutledge, it’s No. 1 quar
terback. Rurtledge suffered a
practice injury and has been re
placed by Richard Todd.
There is only one intra-confer
ence game in the SEC the first
three weeks of the season—Mis
sissippi State-Georgia at Jack
son on Sept. 21. There are only
three conference games on Sept.
28 and two on Oct. 5 so it’s still
a month before the league race
really gets down to business.
Bear Bryant coached Mary
land in 1945, his first season as
a head coach, and has coached
against the Terps only once be
fore—in 1957 when his Texas
A&M team won 21-13. Claiborne
is a former Bryant player and
assistant.
The last time Bryant and
Claiborne matched coaching
wits was in 1970 when Claiborne
was at Virginia Tech and Ala
bama crushed the Gobblers, 51-
18.
“There’s quite a difference be
tween the team that Jerry has
at Maryland and the one he had
at Virginia Tech,” said Bryant.
“I just hope that we are ready,
mentally as well as physical
ly.”
