Braves blank San Diego, 9-0 SAN DIEGO (UPI) - Right hander Buzz Capra watched Mike Lum drive in four of his five runs of the night with a grand slam homer in the first inning, then went out and pitched a six-hitter as the Atlanta Braves romped to a 9-0 blanking of the San Diego Padres. | Open Sunday Ito6p. m. | 'Use Your MASTER CHARGE Card 372N0rthExpressway l RBM Volkswagen L——Get to know us; you’ll like us._-J One hour 'imizm' cean’ieo THE MOST IN DRY CLEANING 462 West Solomon Street 118 West College Street 3 MONDAY - TUESDAY- WEDNESDAY BIG DAYS 5 ANY C ACQ PLAIN •? Solomon St. “Man, that’s great,” said Capra after throwing his fifth shutout and upping his record to 14-8 Friday night. “You can’t know how good it feels. I just love to see our guys hitting like that.” The Braves chased rookie Randy Jones with five runs in the first inning. Jones, who suffered his eighth straight setback and 21st against seven wins, could only record one out before exiting. Dusty Baker doubled across two more runs in the fourth with the bases loaded and Lum, whose first-inning grand slam mer was the first of his major league career, added another run with a sacrifice fly. Darrell Evans hit his 22nd homer in the ninth. The Padres never recovered from Atlanta’s five-run first inning outburst. Capra struck out nine without walking anybody. Atlanta Manager Clyde King said Capra has deserved more than 14 victories this season. “He missed about four starts and had to come out four other times with a recurring blister on his right hand,” King said. “There is no doubt in my mind he would have been a 20-game winner if he hadn’t had blister problems.” Capra says the ailment has been taken care of. “I have no trouble with it any more,” he said. “I keep the nail cut and well-rounded and the trainer is using some softening cream on it.” Dave Freisleben, 9-11, takes the mound for the Padres tonight against Carl Morton, 14- 10. Griffin Bears sock Bulldogs, 20-14 Tailback Johnny Roberts plunged over from the one yard line with a minute, 40 seconds to go in the fourth quarter last night to snap a 14-14 tie and give the Griffin Bears a 20-14 victory over the Rockdale Bulldogs. The Bears had led 8-0, 8-6 and 14-6 before Rockdale tied the score in the fourth quarter. It was Griffin’s first victory of the 1974 season. The loss was Rockdale’s first in two starts. The Region 6-AAA battle at Conyers was delayed 15 minutes because of lightning and rain. Rain still was falling when Rockdale kicked off to Griffin but it stopped in the first quarter. Griffin’s offense sputtered badly in the first half because of penalties but the defense controlled the game, allowing the Bulldogs only 12 yards gained in the first quarter and only 31 in the second. Rockdale did not have a first down at halftime. The second half was different. Rockdale took the second half kickoff and drove 65 yards for a touchdown, using ends sweeps and the QB option to baffle Griffin’s defense. The Bulldogs used the same attack on the 60 yard drive for the tying points. Griffin showed a good offense at times but a dozen penalties, most of them procedure calls, stopped the Bears’ momentum time after time. Rockdale had 190 yards rushing, most of it in the second half. The Bulldogs didn’t gain a yard passing. Griffin picked up 163 yards on the ground and 123 though the air as quarterback Willie Jordan completed nine of ten tosses. At one point in the first quarter, Griffin ran six plays and was penalized three times, all five yard assessments. That series of penalties didn’t seem to bother the Bears. They kept recovering from them on a 60 yard touchdown march that started in the first quarter and ended early in the second. The big play of the drive was a 26 yard run by Randy Cooper that put Griffin in scoring position at the Rockdale 25. Mike Head ran for the two points to give Griffin an 8-0 lead. Rockdale’s first scoring chance came in the second quarter when the Bulldogs recovered a fumble at the Griffin 30. Griffin’s defense paced by Mike Head, Greg Head, Tom Mason, Grant Crawford, Joe McGhee, Steve Harrison and Ronnie Bass held at the 25 and turned the ball over to the of fense. Griffin fumbled again a few plays later. Johnny Wilder killed that threat when he intercepted a pass on the final play of the first half. Rockdale changed its method of attack during the halftime break. The Bulldogs spent the first half attacking the middle of Griffin’s line without any success. They took the second half kick and drove 65 yards for a touch down, utilizing sweeps and options. Their first five second half running plays netted them more yardage than they had gained the entire first half. Danny Mann started the TD drive with a 13 yard burst. Nine plays later quarterback Don Bonner scored from the Griffin three. Rockdale’s attempt for two points failed and Griffin had an 8-6 lead. Rockdale’s Cliff Munger (40) did not touch the ball and Griffin’s Phillip McCrary (24) caught the pass from quarterback Willie Jordan for a 13 yard gain to the Rockdale six yard line. Four plays later Johnny Roberts scored the winning TD from the one yard line. drive to the Rockdale one yard line. It died at the Rockdale two yard line. The highlight of the drive was a 37 yard pass from Jordan to Cooper. Rockdale gained a couple of first downs before quarterback Bonner’s fumble was recovered by Cooper at the Rockdale 33. Griffin drove the 33 yards on five plays for its second touch down. The scoring play was an 11 yard pass from Jordan to tightend Kenny Ellison. Griffin’s extra point kick missed. The score was 14-6 early in the fourth quarter. Rockdale wasted no time building a tying touchdown drive. After the kickoff rolled out of bounds, the ball was placed at the Griffin 40. Rockdale picked up con secutive first downs with a 13 yard run, 14 yard run and a 20 yard run. Those runs left the Bulldogs with possession at the Griffin 13. Dennis Bailey scored from seven yards out. Bonner ran for the two points, tying the score 14-14. Griffin consumed six minutes and 16 seconds on its winning TD drive that started at its 36. The Bears were penalized three times on the lengthy drive but each time made up the lost yardage. Jordan completed four passes on the drive. He hit Wilder with a nine yarder, found Cooper with an eight yarder, hit Ellison with an eight yarder and put Griffin in scoring position with a 13 yarder to Phillip McCrary at the Rockdale six yard line. Bonner tried to move his team with passes after taking the kickoff but Griffin took possession at the Rockdale 20. Jordan ran down the clock with two carries. Head was Griffin’s leading ground gainer with 89 yards on 17 carries. Roberts had 43 on 13 runs and Jordan picked up 16 on nine carries. Griffin made 14 first downs to Rockdale’s 10. The Bears will go after their second 6-AAA win here next Friday when Newton County comes to town. Newton was beaten 31-22 by R. E. Lee last night. In other 6-AAA games, Newnan blasted LaGrange 43-0 and Jonesboro shocked Forest Park 20-9.
