Consumer hearing
set in Griffin
A public hearing on possible
consumer legislation in Georgia
has been scheduled in Griffin
Robin Kendrick
in Who’s Who
Robin Kendrick, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kendrick
of the Ellis road, was recently
notified that she is to be
featured in the eighth annual
edition of “Who’s Who Among
American High School
Students, 1973-74.”
She presently serves as
president of the DCT Club at
Griffin High School where she is
a senior. She is also a member
of the Beta Club. Miss Ken
drick, a member of the First
Assembly of God Church,
serves as president of the
Christ’s Ambassadors and
works part-time in the
Pathology Department at the
Georgia Experiment Station.
Griffin to be
in tv spotlight
The Chamber of Commerce
here will cooperate with
Television Station Channel Two
in presenting a salute to Griffin
Oct. 9.
The station’s Today In
Georgia will feature Griffin.
The chamber will name a
committee to help put the
program together.

Oct. 11. It will begin at 8 p.m. in
the Spalding Courthouse.
Other meetings on the same
subject have been scheduled at
Waycross, Savannah, Albany,
Columbus, Gainesville, Rome,
Athens and Atlanta.
Rep. Clayton Brown, Jr., of
Griffin is a member of the
Consumer Legislation Sub
committee and will participate
in the hearings. He will help
write the proposed legislation to
be submitted to the 1975 session
of the General Assembly.
The subcommittee is under
the Banks and Banking Com
mittee.
Rep. W. M. “Bill” Williams of
Gainesville is chairman of the
Banking Committee.
He invited consumers and
small businessmen to attend the
public hearings and let the
subcommittee members know
whether they support enact
ment of any new consumer
legislation at the next General
Assembly session.

committee besides Rep. Brown
are Rep. Gerald T. Horton of
Atlanta, Rep. Robert Howard of
Marietta, Rep. Randolph Karrh
of Swainsboro; Rep. Hugh Lee
McDaniell of Marietta, Rep.

Charles McKemie, the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Edward McKemie
of 1113 Zebulon road Griffin,
will present a talk entitled:
“The Waldron Shale: Faunal
Interpretation of a Fossiliferous
Silurian Formation” to the
Griffin Kiwanis Club tomorrow.
He is 16 years old and a senior at
Griffin High School. He is a two
palmed Eagle Scout, member of
the GHS marching band, and a
member of the GHS Science
Club and Beta Club. He is also a
member of the First United
Methodist Church of Griffin. His
science project on which he will
speak won grand awards at the
local, district and state science
fairs.
Boys Club
members have
camping trip
Twelve members of the Boys
Club of Griffin enjoyed a
camping trip at Lake Emerald.
Jim Howell gave a demon
stration on archery. Other
weekend activities included
canoeing, swimming, fishing
and nature study.
Dr. Web Chandler, member of
the Environmental Education
Committee of the Georgia
Conservancy, led the boys on a
nature walk over the nature
trail developed by the Con
servancy.
Randy Chandler was canoe
instructor. Grover Sowell is
' camping leader of the Boys
Club of Griffin.

Mr. Hammond
Mr. James Polk “Poker”
Hammond of 330 East College
street died Monday night at the
Living Center of Griffin where
he had been a patient for the
past three days.
Mr. Hammond was a native of
Spalding County, son of the late
John Woods Hammond and the
late Martha Rivers Hammond.
He was a retired lieutenant
colonel from the U. S. Army and
had made his home in Griffin
for the past year. Mr. Ham
mond was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church and
the Griffin Elks Lodge 1207.
Survivors include three
sisters, Mrs. E. S. McDowell,
Jr., of Decatur, Mrs. C. B.
Jenkins, Jr., of Thomaston and
Mrs. George R. Stuart, Jr., of
New Orleans, La.; a sister-in
law, Mrs. Hope H. Hammond of
Griffin and several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Wednesday after
noon at 4 o’clock from the
chapel of Pittman Rawls
Funeral Home. The Rev. Forest
Traylor, Jr., will officiate and
burial will be in Oak Hill
cemetery. The body will remain
at the funeral home. Friends
may visit the family at the
home of Mrs. Hope Hammond,
1006 Skyline drive.
Mr. Holloway
Mr. Robert Holloway of
Detroit, Mich., formerly of
Griffin, died Sunday at the
Detroit General Hospital.
Survivors include a daughter,
Miss Janice Holloway; two
sisters, Mrs. Margaret Parks
and Mrs. Julia Heggis, both of
Griffin; five brothers, Charlie
Daniel, Willie Daniel, George
Daniel, all of Griffin, Asbury
Daniel and Irvin Daniel, both of
Atlanta.
Funeral services will be
conducted Wednesday af
ternoon at 3 o’clock in Detroit.
Hall Funeral Home, Eight Mile
road, in Detroit, is in charge of
plans.

term of Spalding Superior Court
have been drawn. Court will get
under way Monday, Oct. 7 at 9
a.m. with Judge Andrew

Mrs. W. H. Crouch presented
the program at the September
meeting of the Pine Tree
Garden Club.
Mrs. Crouch showed the
process of drying flowers. She
also displayed some flowers she
had completed.
The meeting was held at the
home of Mrs. Julian Gist on
Maple drive. Mrs. Cliff Beck
ham, president, presided.
Plans for the fall flower show
were discussed.
Following the meeting,
refreshments were served to
the members.

plans to have a meet the can
didates breakfast in late Oc
tober for people who have op
position in the November
general elections.
It will be similar to the
program held for candidates
before the primary elections.
People seeking offices of local
interest will be invited to ap
pear, make statements, and

drive
Sept. 30
The Griffin Kiwanis Club will
have its annual clothing drive
Sept. 30. Scott Searcy is
chairman.
Members of the club along
with Key Club members and
Boy Scouts will call on homes
throughout the community
seeking clothing for needy
students in the public school
system here.
Searcy asked Griffinites to
begin checking to see what
usable clothing they can con
tribute to the drive and have it
ready when someone calls on
the night of the drive.
He said usable clothing for
first graders through twelfh
graders is needed. It will be
placed in a clothing bank and
distributed by faculty members
to students in need.
Aidmore
has program
on drugs
The Griffin Aidmore Auxili
ary met at the Elks Lodge for
the monthly meeting.
Lt. Glen Whidby of the Griffin
Narcotics Squad and David
Head of the Spalding County
Sheriff’s Department spoke
about the drug problem in the
area and conducted a question
and answer session.
The auxiliary voted to make a
donation to the United Fund and
to the Golden Age Club.
The Griffin chapter of the
auxiliary will be 20 years old in
October and plans are being
made to hold a 20th anniversary
party Oct. 5.
Thirty-seven members at
tended the meeting.
