Scenic river rapids
hide rugged traps
CLAYTON, Ga. (UPI) -
Deceptively beautiful, the
whitewater rapids at Woodall
Shoals are death lures for
unknowing thrill seekers riding
the wild Chattooga River in
rafts, kayaks and canoes.
The rapids are part of a six
mile stretch rated by experts
as one of the most hazardous
whitewater runs in the United
States. Os the six people who
have died on the river
popularized by the book and
movie “Deliverance,” three
have lost their lives at the
shoals.
Its attraction is its beauty
and remoteness. Nestled among
typical Appalachian hardwood
varieties of oak, hickory and
poplar, the shoals will never be
seen by a casual motorist
unless he discovers the logging
road to the pool at the base of
the rapids.
The danger is a "hydraulic”
or souse hole on the first drop,
made even more treacherous
when the water level rises over
1.7 feet. Dr. Claude Terry, an
Emory University microbiolo
gist and a seasoned veteran of
the river, says the hole
ensnares rafts, sometimes rip

Brown’s Guide to Georgia,
Terry says he has seen several
rafts trapped in the hole from
five to 30 minutes.
The danger of Woodall Shoals
and other rapids on the river,
the other deaths and untold
number of injuries and the
crush of novice “river rats”
seeking excitement have caused
the U. S. Forest Service, which
has jurisdiction over most of
the river, to prepare tough
restrictions to preserve the
safety of the adventurers and
the primitive nature of the
river.
The Chattooga is the only
river system east of the
Mississippi with Class VI
rapids, the highest and most
dangerous rating for whitewa
ter. Beginning at the crest of
the Blue Ridge Mountains near
Cashiers, N. C., the river winds
southward for 50 miles, forming
part of the border of Georgia
and South Carolina in an area
once the exclusive domain of
the Cherokees. The waters drop
an average of 49 feet per mile
before emptying into Tugaloo
Lake.

Could a bad fright have
caused those P V B s?
DEAR READER - PVB is
an abbreviation for pre
mature ventricular beats,
often called extra beats or
flip flops that people some
times feel. You can have
them and never feel a thing,
either. It is just a beat that
comes early (premature) in
ic geological formations. Trout
and redeye bass roam the
upper portions. There are short
stretches where water move
ment hardly can be detected
and places such as the
Narrows, a three-or four-foot
opening through which a
torrent of water rushes.
There are the beautiful Rock
Gardens; Bull Sluice, danger
ous to canoeists because of its
10-foot-high falls; Eye of the
Needle; Roller Coaster, a series
of large waves which Terry
•thinks is the best ride on the
river; Jawbone; Sock’em Dog;

The Forest Service wants life
jackets and helmets required
equipment on the rapids, a
mandatory minimum of two
boats and two people to prevent
solo trips down the river and
the U. S. Coast Guard’s or
manufacturer’s recommenda
tions followed as to boat
capacity. Under the proposed
new rules, a violation could
result in a SSOO fine or six
months in jail.
Congress added the Chattooga
to the National Wild and Scenic
Rivers Act of 1968 in May,
preserving the dense forests
the natural rhythmic beat of
the heart.
Many normal people have
these without heart disease.
If they cause symptoms or oc
cur frequently or with known
heart disease then they can
be important, otherwise, they
are best ignored. That is why
your doctor told you to just go
on and live a normal life. I
doubt they had anything at
all to do with your leg and
arm pain.
However, for anyone who
needs medical help and can’t
get it, don’t be dismayed be
cause the doctor doesn’t
come to the house. If you have
a serious problem he would
need the facilities of the hos
pital anyway. The smart
thing to do if it is really an
emergency is to take a taxi or
an ambulance, depending on
how you feel, ana go to the
hospital emergency room. I
don t recommend this unless
you can’t find a doctor. Or
dinarily a doctor will ask a
patient to go to the hospital,
and he will meet you there, if
you have something serious
that should have fairly im
mediate attention. Or, if he
can’t see you then the hospi
tal staff will do so for him.
Emergency rooms are for
emergencies, however, and
you should only use them for
that. Otherwise real
emergencies won’t receive
proper attention because of
the overload. And one day
you might be the emergency.

afraid not. I do wish it were
all that simple. The only
thing onions and mushrooms
have going for them is that
both are low in fat and
neither contain any
cholesterol. So, it is correct to
say that you could use any
amounts of these you might
wish to eat — in any reasona

they have no medicinal

onions are both low calorie
foods and a reasonably high
percentage of the calories in
mushrooms are protein. My

of both are based on food
values listed by the U.S.

Liner
mutiny
continues
LE HAVRE, France (UPI) -
The striking crew of the luxury
liner France has vowed to keep
up its week-old mutiny despite
the cancellation of the ship’s
final cruises.
“We’re not giving up; we’re
staying put,” striker Marcel
Roland said in a telephone
interview Thursday from the
world’s largest passenger ship,
riding anchor three miles
offshore.
“How long we stay depends
on the government and the
Transat.”
Transat is the Compagnie
General Transatlantique, also
known as the French Line.
The company Wednesday
announced the cancellation of
the France’s two last transat
lantic crossings and two fare
well cruises—one to the Azores,
the other to the United States
and Canada. They were
planned before the scheduled
withdrawal of the ship from
service Oct. 25.
On Sept. 11, the crew and
personnel forced the captain to
drop anchor and seized the
ship, seeking guarantees of re
employment after the France
goes out of service.
The 900 strikers got help
Wednesday evening. A barge
delivered enough fuel to keep
the ship operating another 10
days.
The ships’ engines are
constantly kept running slowly
so it can sail quickly if the need
arises.
Officials decided to stop
operation of the France, long a
symbol of French grandeur, to
save taxpayers the annual $24
million subsidy necessary to
keep it running.
