Hoople sticks
with the Bears
By AMOS B. HOOPLE
Football Expert
Egads, friends.
The Griffin Bears growled
loud last Friday in Conyers and
the tremendous noise was heard
as far away as Thomaston,
Newnan and Clayton County.
The Rockdale Bulldogs think
they are snake bitten when it
comes to playing Griffin.
Four jockeys
tossed
POMONA, Calif. (UPI) -
Four jockeys were thrown from
their mounts in a four-horse
spill in the ninth race at the
Los Angeles County fairgrounds
Wednesday that sent three of
the riders to the hospital.
The conditions of jockeys
Rudy Campas, Rudy Turcotte,
and Frank Inda were not
immediately known. The fourth
jockey involved in the spill, Bill
Mahomey, walked away un
hurt.
The Board of Stewards
declared the race “no contest”
and a total of $102,336 wagered
in the race was returned.
The spill occurred on the first
turn of the ninth race when
Mini McCoy, battling for the
early lead, apparently broke
down unseating Campas and
setting off a chain reaction.
Mullins
sidelined
SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) -
Jeff Mullins, 32, an eight-year
veteran guard with the Golden
State Warriors, has been
sidelined with a collapsed left
lung, the club announced
Wednesday night.
A team spokesman said
Mullins would not see any
action for at least two weeks.
The team doctor said the
collapse was minimal and the
benching of the star backcourt
man was a “precautionary
measure.”

For instance, last season,
Rockdale had a shot at a region
championship until the mighty
Bears defeated them.
Rockdale was unbeaten (they
had played only one game) last
week when Coach Max Dowis
carried his Bears to Conyers.
Griffin scored first and went
on to a 20-14 victory.
I predicted a 19-6 win for
Griffin. I forgot to take the
weather into consideration. The
game was delayed 15 minutes
by lightning and rain and that
affected the outcome, hummph.
Griffin faces another Region
6-AAA opponent here Friday
night. The Newton Rams, who
Head may start

There is a good possibility
that Griffin’s Tony Head wiU be
Georgia Tech’s starting full
back Saturday when the YeUow
Jackets play Pittsburgh in
Atlanta.
Head, a sophomore, rushed
for 261 yards and four touch
downs last season with the Tech
Freshmen. He also caught
seven passes for 60 yards and a
touchdown. His five touchdowns
and 30 points were tops for the
young Jackets.
Right now Head is listed as
Tech’s no. 1 fullback for the
Pittsburgh game.

gave the R. E. Lee Rebels fits a
week ago, will be in town.
The Rebels beat the Rams 31-
22 but the last TD was a gift late
in the game.
The Rams can score. That’s
the report my spies turned over
to me after watching the Rebel-
Ram clash from just outside the
stadium in Covington.
The spies developed a game
plan for the Bears but it wasn’t
turned over to Coach Dowis. We
figured he had a good one.
The Bears are 1-1 after two
games. They continue to im
prove and by tomorrow night,
should be much stronger than
they were against Central of
Macon or Rockdale.
My calculations show that
Griffin’s defense will come
alive Friday and put the stop to
Newton’s offense.
At the same time, the Griffin
offense, which has had a few
problems with untimely
penalties, will rid itself of
mistakes and play a tremen
dous game.
I predict a tough night for the
Newton Rams.
Griffin will put it together and
defeat the visitors, 27-8.
He was elevated to number
one spot when Rick Hill, Tech’s
number one fullback pulled a
hamstring in practice Tuesday.
Hill’s back up man, Jimmy
Murray, suffered a charley
horse last Saturday in Tech’s
victory over South Carolina.
Murray probably will play
against Pittsburgh but at the
moment Head is listed as the
number one fullback for the
game.
Bruce Yeager is listed as no. 2
for the game and Murray is
currently number three.
