Easy part over
for Razorbacks
By United Press International
The easy part is over for
Arkansas. Now the hard part
begins.
Arkansas, which scored the
major upset on last Saturday’s
college football program by
defeating Southern California,
climbed from nowhere into the
top 10 this week but now the
trick will be for the Razorbacks
to stay there. And that won’t be
easy.
By defeating Southern Cali
fornia, a team that was ranked
No. 4 in the pre-season ratings,
Arkansas has established a
reputation as a power and
every game from here on out
will seem like a Super Bowl
encounter for the young Razor
backs. That’s the price of being
a name brand instead of brand
x.
Trouble, with a capital T,
begins for Arkansas Saturday
night at Little Rock when the
ninth-ranked Razorbacks enter
tain Oklahoma State, one of the
better clubs from the powerful
Big Eight Conference. The
Cowboys opened their season
last week in colossal style by
routing Wichita State 59-0.
Saturday night’s game will be
the 40th meeting between the
two clubs since 1912 and

LAST OF “VOW BOYS”
PASADENA, Calif. (UPI) -
Funeral services will be held
Thursday for Keith Topping, an
end on the celebrated Stanford
University “Vow Boys” football
team.
Topping, 62, died of a heart
ailment Saturday. He preceded
in death by only a few hours
his 95-year-old mother, Emma
Frantz Topping.
The “Vow Boys” got their
name because they vowed
never to get beaten by Southern
California and they never were.
They went to the Rose Bowl
three times—l 934, 1935 and
1936. They lost to Columbia and
Alabama in their first two
appearances and then beat
Southern Methodist 7-0.

Arkansas holds a substantial 25-
13-1 edge. However, last year
Oklahoma State ended a five
game losing streak against the
Razorbacks with a 38-6 triumph
in Little Rock’s War Memorial
Stadium. The Cowboys’ defense
was awesome in that contest,
holding Arkansas to just 85
yards total offense.
But Cowboy Coach Jim
Stanley is worried about this
year’s game. He wasn’t too
happy with the way his team
played against Wichita State
last week, despite the final
score, and after looking at the
game film he was mortified.
“We’re certainly two-steps
away from being quick
enough,” said Stanley. “We
weren’t getting off the ball, our
backs don’t run near hard
enough for our type of offense
and our tackling was sloppy.
The film proved if we play like
that against Arkansas we’ll get
beat by three touchdowns.”

Ellis, a second-round draft
choice in 1966 out of the
University of San Francisco,

when he averaged 15.8 points
per game.
Johnson, a 6-foot-6 forward,
participated in the Warriors’
rookie camp in July and
impressed Coach Al Attles with
his jumping ability. At Califor
nia, Johnson set a school record
in the high jump with a leap of

Texans have new home
SHREVEPORT, La. (UPI) —
The Houston Texans of the
World Football League have a
new home, at least temporarily,
and are looking for a new name
to go along with it.
The WFL moved the Houston
franchise to Shreveport
Wednesday and said the team
would operate under league
administration until the end of
the season. The move came
only three weeks after Texans
owner Steve Arnold turned the
team’s bills over to the WFL
office and agreed to sell the
club.
The Texans reportedly built
up a $200,000 debt and had a
$1.5 million payroll. Only 20,000
fans came out for the last two
home games.
The first game to be played
in 42,000-seat State Fair Stadi-
um will be Sept. 25 against
Memphis. Houston’s last game
as the Texans will be tonight
against the Birmingham Ameri
cans. The team will be
renamed before opening its
five-game home schedule in
Shreveport.
“It’s a real big thing for us in
the Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas
area to be selected by the
World Football League as the
site of the franchise,” Shreve
port Mayor Calhoun Allen said
in announcing the shift.
“There’s a real interest here.
The attitude and the spirit are
a great part of Louisiana,
Southwest Arkansas and East
Texas. Without any doubt in my
mind we can make this thing
go,” said Allen.
