charge made
While Spalding Sheriff’s
deputies were apprehending a
suspected drunk driver over the
weekend, the Sheriff’s office
received a report the car he was
driving had been stolen.
Anthony Lamar Holt, 26, 630
Melrose avenue, was charged
with driving under the influence
and theft of a motor vehicle.
Steve Long, 440 East Mcln
tosh road, owned the auto.
A lookout also was issued for
a stolen 1970 Chevrolet Monte
Carlo with tag number ERN
-682.
The owner, Leon Willis, 210
East Broad street, reported
Saturday around 3 p.m. that his
car had been stolen sometime
Friday night from the VFW
Club on North Third street.

Mr. Smith, Jr.
Mr. Columbus Jackson Smith,
Jr., of 1024 Lyndon avenue was
dead on arrival at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital Sunday af
ternoon.
Mr. Smith was born in
Eatonton and had made his
home in Griffin for most of his
life. He was a retired mechanic
of Ford Motor Co., in Hapeville.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Clessel Inez Bishop Smith;
three sons, Charles Smith,
William Smith and Hubert
Smith, all of Griffin; eight
grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be
conducted Tuesday afternoon at
2 o’clock in McDonald Chapel.
The Rev. Warren Bedingfield
will officiate and burial will be
in Griffin Memorial Gardens.
The body will remain at the
funeral home.
Mr. Wilson
Graveside services for Mr.
Cecil Wilson of Marietta were
held this afternoon at 3 o’clock
in the Georgia Memorial Park
cemetery in Smyrna.
Survivors include a brother,
Melvin Wilson of Griffin; a
sister, Mrs. Ruby Whatley of
Marietta; two daughters, Mrs.
Roy Staples of Jackson and
Mrs. George Dunbar of
Jacksonville, Fla., and five
grandchildren.
Mrs. Dukes
Mrs. Pearl T. Dukes of
Atlanta, formerly of Griffin,
died this morning.
Survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Annie P.
Henderson of Griffin and Mrs.
Clara Blackwell of Atlanta.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rooks
Mrs. Maggie Tommie
Bowden Rooks, 77, of Flovilla
was dead on arrival at the
Sylvan Grove Hospital early
yesterday after suffering an
apparent heart seizure.
She was the wife of Charles E.
Rooks of Flovilla. She was a
member of the Jackson United
Methodist Church. She was bom
July 11, 1897, daughter of the
late Robert T. Bowden and the
late Cynthia Hickman Bowden.
Survivors , include her
husband, three daughters, Mrs.
E. O. Couch of Rome, Ga., Mrs.
Albert Silver of Calhoun, Ga.,
and Mrs. William Grady of
Chicago; five sons, Charles E.
Rooks, Jr., of Jackson, Herman
Rooks of Panama City, Fla.,
James Rooks of Gresham, Org.,
Gerold Rooks of San Francisco,
Calif., and Ramon Rooks of
Largo, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs.
Dan Lynch of Macon, Mrs. R. S.
Hall of Jacksonville, Fla., and
Mrs. Horace Johnson of Mc-
Donough; a brother, R. T.
Bowden of Jacksonville, Ga.,
several grandchildren and
great grandchildren as well as
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held
tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock
from the chapel of Sherrell
Funeral Home in Jackson. The
Rev. Phil DeMore will officiate.
Burial will be in the Jackson
city cemetery.
The body will remain at the
funeral home until the service.
Mrs. Pleas
Mr. Oscar Pleas of Atlanta,
formerly of Spalding and
Fayette Counties, died Satur
day at Grady Memorial
Hospital.
Funeral plans will be an

Funeral Home.
Mrs. Brownlee
Mrs. Georgia Mae Brownlee
of Route one, Meansville, died
Sunday afternoon after several
weeks of illness.
Mrs. Brownlee was a lifelong
resident of Pike County and a
member of the Antioch Baptist
Church in Zebulon.
Survivors include a son, W. J.
“Buck” Buffer of Meansville.
