‘Must stop mistakes’
Bass , Cooper
replace Head
Coach Max Dowis faced two
problems today as he began
preparing his Griffin Bears for
a crucial 6-AAA clash with the
Grangers Friday in LaGrange.
He must find defensive and
offensive replacements for
Mike Head, who will miss the
remainder of the season with a
broken ankle, and the coach
plans to continue the search for
a cure that will stop Griffin’s
mistakes.
Coach Dowis said this mor
ning that he planned to shift
Ronnie Bass to defensive end.
He also plans to prepare Carl
Imes, a corner back, and Kenny
Ellison, a tight end, for the posi
tion.
“Bass has played defensive
end and it shouldn’t be too
difficult for him to get ready,”
the coach said.
“There isn’t too much differ
ence between comer back and
defensive end, so Imes should
be able to make the shift also,”
Sullivan may
replace Lee
ATLANTA (UPI) - Coach
Norm Van Brocklin doesn’t
announce the Atlanta Falcons’
1 starting quarterback until two
days before a game but it looks
like Pat Sullivan may get the
call next Sunday at New
Orleans.
“We might put someone else
in there,” Van Brocklin said
after Bob Lee had his second
bad game in a row in Sunday’s
16-10 loss to the San Francisco
49ers. “We’ll start thinking
’ about that tomorrow. I thought
about it (replacing Lee with
Sullivan) just before that last
interception.”
Lee, who hit only 4-of-22
passes for 28 yards in the
previous Sunday’s loss to
* Dallas, hit 10-of-23 for 99 yards
against the 49ers —but that's
only part of the story.
San Francisco turned Lee’s
* first two passes into touch
downs. Sip Vanderbundt
picked off the first one at the
, Atlanta 30, returning it 18
yards, and the 49ers scored
four plays later.
Three plays after that,
* Jimmy Johnson intercepted at
the Atlanta 39-and again it
took the 49ers four plays to
score, giving them a 13-0 lead
* with only 4:58 gone in the
game.
Atlanta managed a touch
* down late in the first period,
that too set up by an
interception, but managed only
three more points the rest of
* the afternoon and the Falcons
fans vocalized their dis
pleasure.
, “Boos are part of the game,”
said Lee, a hero last year when
he led Atlanta to seven straight
mid-season wins. “The way we
* played, I don’t blame them.”
Sullivan, the former Heisman
Trophy winner from Auburn
who has spent almost all of his
4 more than two seasons with the
Falcons on the bench, said Van
Brocklin “hasn’t said anything
* to me about starting, yet. But
I’m ready.”

Coach Dowis added.
Ellison hasn’t played the posi
tion but Coach Dowis plans to
get him ready just in case he’s
needed.
The coach feels that Head will
be missed more on defense than
he will on offense.
“He has been our best
defensive player,” he said.
Head’s replacements on of
fensive will be Randy Cooper
and Johnny Wilder.
“We’ll just run Cooper more
at tailback. That will give him
more duty and put more burden
on him,” Coach Dowis said.
Wilder will also log more
running time in the absence of
Head.
Cooper and Wilder are
starters in Griffin’s secondary.
As for the mistakes, the coach
said Griffin must stop making
them “or we’ll only be a fair
team.”
Coach Dowis and his staff will
continue to concentrate on the
As for Lee’s problems,
Sullivan said, “I really feel for
the guy.”
San Francisco Coach Dick
Nolan was excited about his
defense which intercepted three
passes, recovered three fum
bles and sacked Lee a couple of
times.
“They were really alert,”
said Nolan. “They got the
fumbles and just about every
thing else.”
After scoring three TDs
between them in the first 11:39
of play, neither team crossed
the other’s goal again. There
were two fourth period field
goals, the first by Atlanta’s
Nick Mike-Mayer and the
second by the 49ers’ Bruce
Gossett.
But Mike-Mayer hit the goal
post on a 21-yarder late in the

problem in practice.
Griffin gained over 300 yards
last Friday against Newton and
had only seven points to show
for the yardage.
Coach Dowis said today that
Griffin probably had 100 or
more yards erased because of
penalties.
Besides that, Griffin had four
turnovers, three fumbles and a
pass interception.
One fumble cost Griffin a sure
touchdown. Another came after
a long run and a penalty erased
a good punt return.
Coach Dowis warned his team
that it must be ready to play
Friday in LaGrange.
The Grangers played a decent
game last Friday against Lee
after losing the week before 43-0
to Newnan.
“They are improving,” Coach
Dowis said “and we must be
ready to play.”
second period and Gossett
missed four, all 43 yards or
longer.
“In general, our running
game (173 yards) went pretty
good and our defense really
shut them down,” said Nolan.
“(Quarterback) Joe Reed (fill
ing in for injured Steve
Spurrier) showed a lot of
improvement but he still has a
lot to learn.”
The victory gave the 49ers a
2-0 record and the loss dropped
Atlanta to 0-2.
“We’ve got to get ourselves
together and try to come
back,” said Atlanta defensive
end John Zook. “Our fans, if we
are playing well, will support
us.”
“We’re not getting that little
spark we need,” said Van
Brocklin.

Astros outlast Braves
HOUSTON (UPl)—The
Atlanta Braves have seen the
last of the Astrodome for this
season and they’re probably
thankful.
They played 33 innings of base
ball with the Houston Astros
over the weekend and could
manage but one win against two
losses.
Phil Niekro earned a 1-0 vic
tory in Friday night’s opener of
the series, but Houston bounced
back to take a 6-5 win in 10 in

Sunday.
