They stick in the wall and cause the deposits. Part or all of the deposits will be removed, in many cases, if the amount of fatty particles and cholesterol in the bloodstream is sufficiently low. To lower the fatty cholesterol particles in the blood you need to be on a diet that does not contain excess calories and either prevents or eliminates obesity. The diet should be low in fat, low in saturated fat, and low in cholesterol. The reversibility of fatty deposits in the arteries has been demonstrated in animals under strict experi- mental control. The monkey was used for one of the best ex periments because he is more like the human. The monkeys developed fatty-cholesterol deposits in the arteries when they were on a rich diet, and the fatty deposits were not present after monkeys were put back on a less rich monkey diet. The same thing has been demonstrated in people. The problems associated with fat ty-cholesterol deposits in the arteries, specifically heart disease, decreased or almost disappeared from European populations of World War 11. There are innumerable studies showing this relation ship. For more information about cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood fats as related to artery and heart disease, write to me at P. 0. Would you please advise my husband and I about a vol unteer job as we have had skills and experience? — Mrs. T.S. A. There are volunteer jobs that will make use of your own particular skills and experi ences. You may want to con tact your local schools, church, hospital, or charities to find out what kind of volun teer help is needed in your own community. Another source of information besides these local groups is: The National Center for Voluntary Action, 1735 Eye Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20006. The many retired people who have involved them selves in voluntary activities are proving once again that “retirement” does not signal the end of something, but rather the beginning of some new adventure. Q. What are the privileges for older persons to remem ber their age? — R.Q. A. Q. Are hearing aids mis leading? — B.Y. A. The Federal Trade Com mission (FTC)-has warned consumers against advertis ing which claims that hearing aids can remedy all hearing difficulties. Many older peo ple suffer from some loss of hearing and they are the main targets of misleading hearing aid advertising. The FTC points out that not all hearing trouble can be solved by using a hearing aid. It advises everyone to be sure to have a doctor, audiologist (hearing specialist), or hear ing clinic determine if a hear ing aid will help. Q. People on Social Security — do they receive an increase in benefits when the cost of living keeps soaring? — A.A.G. A. After May 1975, benefits may automatically be in creased to keep pace with in creases in the cost of living if laws providing general bene fit increases are not passed. You will recall that a gener al benefit increase of 11 per cent was paid in a two-step in crease earlier this year. The first month for which a cost of living increase may be effective is June, 1975. The in crease will be payable if the consumer price index shows an increase of at least 3 per cent between the second quar ter of 1974 and the first quar ter of 1975.
