Frank Thompson, DN.J., told Gross’ colleagues at the Washington Press Club farewell ceremony Wednesday that in all his years of acquaintance with Gross “I don’t know that he has ever spent over 85 cents.” Rep. Morris K. Udall, D.Ariz., proposed a book about Gross to be called ‘ ‘Nitpicking and Pennypinching in Your Spare Time for Fun and Profit.” Washington Press Club President Ronald Sarro | presented Gross “50 uncirculated pennies to pinch” and • other gifts to honor his cost-cutting ways. Cotton to teach WASHINGTON (UPI) — Retiring Sen. Norris Cotton, | RN.H., one of Richard Nixon’s long-time friends, will teach a course at Dartmouth College next spring on ‘ ‘what | makes Congress tick.” Cotton, 74, retires at the end of his term in January after 28 years in Congress, 20 of them as senator. Cotton said he expected wide ranging questions from his | students. “Ever since the world began there’s been | inquiring students,” he said. Cornfeld chairman PHOENIX, Ariz. (UPI) — Financier Bernie Cornfeld g has become chairman of the board of a real estate development firm operating in Arizona and Nebraska, it f? was announced Wednesday. Cornfeld, who was jailed in Switzerland for 11 months on | fraud charges connected with Investors Overseas Service, returned to the United States when the charges were drop- | ped. He has been named chairman of the board of |i Southwestern Research Corp, which owns Golden Valley | Land Co. and Southwest Studio, a television studio in the | desert that has not been used since Dick van Dyke moved | back to Los Angeles 18 months ago. ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★ Monkey business CHICAGO (UPI) — Police on the Northwest Side, armed with the knowledge of how to catch a kangaroo, found themselves on a wild monkey chase Friday. Mrs. Dorothy Dedmon called police Friday when she found a furry creature sleeping on the doorstep of her home on the Northwest Side. Police responded, thinking it may be the elusive kangaroo that roughed up two of Chicago’s finest about a month ago and escaped. The kangaroo has been spotted in several cities near Chicago in the past few weeks, but has not been caught. Upon arriving, police found it was a squirrel monkey. After several attempts of chasing the monkey around the house, police were finally able to corner it under the porch.
