Page 2 — Griffin Daily News Thursday, November 21,1974 Deaths -F iinerals Mr. Gabard Mr. John Montgomery Gabard of 1043 Briarcliff road, Atlanta, died Wednesday night at Emory University Hospital where he had been a patient for the past five days. A native of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Mrs. Gabard had made his home in Griffin for 31 years before moving to Atlanta. He owned and operated Gabard’s Limited Store in Griffin for several years. He was em ployed with Georgia Higher Education in business and professional services in Atlanta. Mr. Gabard was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Vanderbilt University where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the Navy and was a retired com mander. Mr. Gabard was past president of the Griffin Rotary Club and the Griffin Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Fielding Gabard; two daughters, Miss Jan Gabard and Miss Jean Gabard, all of Atlanta; mother, Mrs. Nell Gabard of Brentwood, Tenn.; two sisters, Mrs. David Jean of Brentwood, Tenn., and Mrs. Robert Mefford of Mt. Pleasant, Tenn.; and a brother, Dr. William M. Gabard of Valdosta. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the graveside in the new section of Oak Hill cemetery. The body will remain at Pittman Rawls Funeral Home. Mr. McCollum Mr. Albert Lee “Red” Mc- Collum of McDonough road died early this morning at St. Joseph’s Infirmary in Atlanta. Mr. McCollum was born in Cherokee County, Ga., and had made his home in Griffin for 17 years. He was a member of the Orchard Hill Baptist Church and a retired truck driver. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada Gardner McCollum; three sisters, Mrs. Robert Carlile of Marietta, Mrs. Beulah Hahan of San Pedro, Calif., and Mrs. Bessie Groover of Griffin; two brothers, Talmadge McCollum of Forest Park and Johnny McCollum of Rex; three step-sons, C. E. Grubbs of Griffin, Robert L. Grubbs, Jr., of Atlanta and M- Sgt. Don Grubbs, U.S. Au- Force, New York. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Orchard Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Charles Robinson and the Rev. Calvin Davis will officiate and burial will be in Rehoboth Baptist Church cemetery. The body will remain at McDonald Chapel. Mr. Williams Mr. Jesse James Williams, 60, of 707 Pimento avenue died this morning at the Griffin- Spalding Hospital where he had been a patient for four days. Mr. Williams was a lifelong resident of Spalding County. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Farris Williams. Funeral plans will be an nounced by McDowell United Funeral Home. Mrs. Daniel Mrs. Estella Daniel, 73, of 980 Anne street died Nov. 15 at Upson County Hospital in Thomaston after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Daniel was a member of the Spring Hill Baptist Church in Griffin. Survivors include an aunt, Mrs. Willie Bell Robinson of Barnesville. Funeral plans will be an nounced by McDowell United Funeral Home. About Town LEAGUE The Griffin League of Women Voters unit meetipg will be held tonight at Mr. Zion Baptist Church on Memorial drive, beginning at 8 p.m. The program will be on land use. YARD SALE The Wesley Sunday School Class of Kincaid United Methodist Church will sponsor a; yard sale Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., weather per mitting, at 1373 Experiment street, across from IGA Shopping Center. FELLOWSHIP SUPPER A community fellowship supper sponsored by the Griffin area Lutherans will be held tonight at 7:30 p.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Parish Hall. The Lutherans in the Griffin area are organizing St. John’s Lutheran Church and hold services at Griffin Academy each Sunday at 11 a.m. Anyone interested in Lutheran worship is invited to attend. Brooks bazaar planned The Brooks United Methodist Church will have a bazaar Saturday to raise money for renovating the fellowship hall of the church. The bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. It will feature baked goods, a flea market and attic sale, items for the Christmas season and other things. Pack 18 has meeting Pack 18 of the Cub Scouts of America held its first meeting at Beaverbrook School. The opening ceremony was presented by Den One. Jeff Gatlin presided, presenting the den leaders and Webelo leader. Each den presented a skit on Thanksgiving. Cubmaster Gatlin presented Bobcat badges to the following Cubs: Glen Jones, Jr., Ted Evans, David Bennett, Chris Bozeman, Monte Shiflett, William Nix, Ronnie Fetting, Darrell Ellerbee, Patrick Akin, Bobby Carroll, Theron Corse, Edward Durden, Bobby Wayne Spillman, Jimmy Stewart, Ronald Cook, Douglas Wood, Chris Doane, Michael Rhodes and John Hart. Buggy Days to feature big parade Saturday’s events will climax a week of Barnesville Buggy Days. A parade is planned down main street at 2:00 p.m. It will include buggies, wagons, old cars, and other items present in turn of the century Barnesville. There will be gunfights in the downtown area and many people will be dressed in the attire of the period. The Barnesville-Lamar County Historical Society will have an exhibit in the newly restored depot depicting items from the 1890’s and 1900’s. Anyone wishing to contribute items to this may bring them by the depot Friday night or Satur day morning. They can be picked up Saturday evening. Free flea market space will be available to the public on the depot grounds. Refreshments will be spon sored by the Historical Society. Mrs. J. C. Waller, Jr. in Barnesville is coordinating arrangements. Civic Ballet begins plans for performance The Parents Association of the Griffin Civic Ballet has begun plans for their annual performance to be held Feb. 1 at the Griffin High auditorium. This year the Ballet Company will present the second act of “The Nutcracker” and “The Little Match Girl”. Serving on the board of directors this . year are president, Mrs. Robert Thesing; vice-president, Mrs. Henry Evans; secretary, Mrs. R. G. Strickland; treasurers, Mrs. Jack Ryan and Mrs. T. A. Howie; members-a Marge, Mrs. s 3 ..TM i.XW hSlJtfj Buggy days An old cannon on the Gordon Junior College campus started a week-long celebration of Barnesville Buggy Days with a bang. The BBD’s commemorated the buggy-manufacturing businesses that flourished in the early 1900’s in Barnesville. Scheduled events included a square dance, quarterhorse events, an old-fashioned gunfight, a Gordon Singers Concert, and a downtown parade. George Lewis, Mrs. John Allison. Committee chairmen are Mrs. Neal Bonds, publicity; advertising, Mrs. Clarence Bush; costumes, Mrs. Henry Evans, tickets, Mrs. Miriam French; education program, Mrs. Lillian Portiss; calling, Mrs. Charles Releford; and fund raising, Mrs. Thomas Lipscomb. Robert Archard of Atlanta is artistic director for the Ballet company, assisted by Miss Dean Williams of Griffin and Miss Rosa Barile of Atlanta. Woman killed in accident Hazel Frances Richardson, 41, of Route Two, Box 300, Jackson, was dead on arrival at the Sylvan Grove Hospital in Jackson last night after she was in an automobile wreck on Covington Highway a mile from Jackson. Three of her grandchildren in the car with her were trans ferred to the Griffin-Spalding Hospital for treatment. They were listed as Edgar Phillips, one; Tammi Phillips, three; Bake sale planned St. George’s Episcopal Church is planning a Christmas bake sale Dec. 9 from noon until 6 p.m. It will feature all sorts of holi day baked goods as well as candies, cookies, preserves, relishes, cakes, pickles, and* other seasonal goodies. Some dishes can be frozen and served later during the Christmas sea son. All of the goods to be offered for sale will be home baked and home prepared.
