— Griffin Daily News Friday, November 22,1974 Page 12 The Griffin Bears will play the Rockdale Bulldogs tonight for the Region 6-AAA cham pionship. An over-flow crowd will be at Memorial Stadium to see the classic confrontation. Both teams have 9-1 records and are rated among the best triple-A squads in Georgia. Griffin has a 9-0, 6-AAA record. Rockdale finished 8-1. SPORTS ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★A******** Alabama picked in SEC cage race ATLANTA (UPI) - His fellow coaches in the Southeast ern Conference are all in agreement that Alabama’s C. M. Newton should have the league champion this winter. Their figuring is simple enough. Alabama has four starters returning from a team that posted a best-in-the conference 22-4 record a year ago. But C. M. thinks they are being hasty. “I don’t think we’ll be that great,” said Newton. “I hope we are. But, it’s a new season, and each year a team takes on a personality of its town.” Newton is aware that peren nial-power Kentucky appears ready to resume its place at the head of the Southeastern Conference. He knows that although Kentucky was only 13- 13 last year, the Wildcats also have four starters returning and appear to have picked off a better group of freshmen than any other college team in the nation. Newton knows that Ken tucky’s weakness last season was at center, that 6-9 Bob Guyette performs better at forward. And he knows that Kentucky picked up two of the better big prospects in 6-11, 235- JB WESTERN CENTER 411 E. Solomon Street Phone 228-1148 MEN’S BOOTS, SHIRTS, TIES, JEANS, JACKETS. Griffin won the Division 11, 6- AAA (subregion) champion ship. Rockdale won the Division I title. Most observers rate the game a toss-up despite Griffin’s earlier victory. Griffin operates from a pro type formation with flankers and split ends. The Bears pound Rick Robey of New Orleans and 6-11 Mike Phillips of Manchester, Ohio. The only freshman expected to see much action at Alabama is 6-3 guard Anthony Murray of Birmingham. Newton plans to start Murray as a replacement for Ray Odoms, last year’s only senior regular. “People keep saying we only lost Ray Odoms, but that is a heck of an only,” said Newton. “It changes a lot of things for us. We’ll be bigger this season, but, without Odoms, we won’t be as quick.” Alabama tied Vanderbilt, with matching 15-3 league records, for the Southeastern Conference cage title, but Vanderbilt got the NCAA berth because the Commodores beat the Crimson Tide both times they met. Some observers figure that Alabama would have been in the NCAA playoffs if it had had a leader like Vandy’s Jan Van Breda Kolff, and that the more muscular Tiedmen would have made a better showing. “I don’t want one person to run our team,” insisted New ton. “But, Charles Cleveland will be our leader. “We can be a better basketball team. I feel we will Griffin vs Rockdale balance their running with the passing of quarterback Willie Jordan. Rockdale uses the wishbone formation and depends mainly on a powerful ground game. The wishbone is operated by quarterback Don Bonner, a very good runner. If there is an offensive differ ence it is the passing of Griffin. (Rockdale does not rely on be a better team. But, our record probably won’t show it. Other teams also will be better and it’s hard to go 22-4 if you play a representative schedu le.” The SEC coaches predicted the conference race would go like this: 1-Alabama, 2-Kentucky, 3- Tennessee, 4-Vanderbilt, 5-Au burn, 6-Florida, 7-Mississippi State, 8-Louisiana State, 9- Georgia, and 10-Ole Miss. The coaches weren’t allowed to vote for their own teams so Newton picked Kentucky to win the conference while Ken tucky’s Joe Hall picked Alabama. They were also asked to pick who they thought would be the top five players in the conference and they named six. The list included Cleveland, who Newton is pushing for All- America, and 6-10 Leon Dou glas of Alabama; Kentucky’s Kevin Greavy, last year’s SEC scoring leader; Florida’s 6-8 Chip Williams; LSU’s Glenn Hansen, compared by many to John Havlicek of the Boston Celtics; and Auburn sophomore Eddie Johnson, last year’s No. 2 scorer in the SEC. The past recruiting period was supposedly a super one for the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky and Auburn both got four from a list of the top-100 prospects (Kentucky actually for four of the top 17), and Georgia got three. One survey listed Kentucky No. 1, Georgia No. 3 and Auburn No. 5 in the recruiting. However, Georgia’s ranking is a bit misleading at the moment since 6-10 Lucius Foster is academically ineligi ble to play. passing because of the power it gets from the wishbone ground game.) South Carolina making bid for Lou Holtz By United Press International The University of South Carolina is making a bid for North Carolina State’s Lou Holtz as the successor to Paul Dietzel. Holtz, whose team plays in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl, says he may talk to Gamecock officials but “anything beyond that would be pure speculation. “I still have a job at N.C. State, the last word I had, and I plan on being at N.C. State,” said Holtz, in the third year of a five-year contract at State. Holtz, a former South Caroli na assistant, said he was out of town Thursday but was left word “to call some people in South Carolina.” N.C. State chancellor John T. Caldwell said William H. Patterson, president of the University of South Carolina, had asked his permission Tuesday to approach Holtz. Caldwell said he gave his approval since the request was merely a matter of courtesy. Dietzel, under fire for failing to build a consistent winner at South Carolina, said shortly after the start of the football season that he was resigning as head coach at the end of the ■ - - palace - RJC. main event THE MIGHTY YANKEES (<\\ || With Manager J. Roberts rushed for over 1,000 yards during the regular season. Rockdale’s excellent wish bone attack will pressure Griffin’s defense. That first string defense allowed only two touchdowns in the last three games. Coach Dowis figures Griffin’s defense holds the key to the season. He will remain as athletic director. The Gamecocks end their season Saturday against arch rival Clemson. South Carolina is 4-6. Elsewhere in the Southeast Thursday, Tennessee wrapped up is preparations for Satur day’s battle with Kentucky for the Liberty Bowl bid opposite Maryland, and Coach Bill Battle said the contest could be decided by the kicking game. “Both teams have quality personnel for their kicking game and neither can afford to make any mistakes,” said Battle. At Kentucky, Coach Fran Curci said freshman Bob Winkel would start at right defensive tackle instead of Jerry Blanton. Mississippi State worked out 90 minutes for its traditional clash with Mississippi, and Vanderbilt reviewed its strate gy for Louisville and worked on its two-minute offense. Ohio State, Michigan tickets are unavailable By United Press International The definition of a “big gamq” can’t always be deter mined by what transpires on the field. In some cases, the setting can be even bigger than the reality of combat. Such a scene will take place at Columbus, Ohio, Saturday when Ohio State hosts Michigan in what may be the Game of the Year—both on the field and off. It is being preceded by such a frantic scramble for tickets that one hopeful Ohio State entrepreneur placed a price of SIO,OOO on a pair of seats and another coed actually sold three tickets for S6OO. At whatever price they pay, there will be a noisy, holiday high crowd of 86,000 fans in attendance, plus untold millions of freeloaders who will watch on television. In addition to a highly-prized victory, at stake for Michigan and Ohio State will be the Big Ten Conference championship and a Rose Bowl berth. The Wolverines, still steam ing over last year’s decision by the Big 10 to bypass them in favor of Ohio State as the conference representative to the Rose Bowl, carry a 10-0 record into their season finale and the No. 2 position in the national rankings. The Buckeyes are ranked third with a 9-1 record, the loss coming in a highly controversi al 19-13 decision to Michigan State two weeks ago. Ohio State, with the home field advantage, has been listed as an eight-point favorite, but the two rival coaches discount the spread. “There’s no such thing as an underdog in this game,” said Michigan Coach Bo Schembe chler, and Woody Hayes of Ohio State responded, “You and I both know that it’s going to be a tossup out there.” Top-ranked Alabama is idle this week in preparation for next Friday’s donnybrook with sixth-ranked Auburn, but sever al other traditional rivalries NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC Due to my health I will no longer be able to continue to serve you as your insurance agent Let me introduce to you, thru this letter, my friend and replacement Brack Pound. (UPI) - The Georgia Bulldogs have officially accepted a berth in tie Tangerine Boowl in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 12, when they will battle 12th-ranked Miami of Ohio. The University of Georgia Athletic Board Thursday ap proved the Bulldogs’ participa tion in the bowl. Miami, which had a 9-0-1 record in a season marred only by a tie with Purdue, accepted its Tangerine Bowl berth earlier.
