★★★★★★★★★★★★★A************ SPORTS *★★★*★★★****************** Coaches rate Armstrong best By United Press International Although South Atlantic Con ference basketball coaches have tabbed Armstrong State to win the conference champion ship this year the coach of last year’s titlist says his team “will be good again this season.” Armstrong State will have last year’s leading scorers Ike Williams and Sonny Powell returning along with 6-foot-B Sam Berry, who sat out last year because of accademic problems. One conference coach said “Armstrong State has to be the favorite, they are loaded with talent. West Georgia won the confer ence championship last year and then went on to win the National Association of Inter collegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament in Kansas City, Mo., The Braves have only one regular returning but Coach Roger Kaiser said he expects to field a good team again this year. “I think we will have the best pair of guards in the state this year in David Edmonds and Tony Stroud who trans ferred from Western Kentuck y,” Kaiser said. The Braves lost Clarence “Foots” Walker, who was voted the most valuable player in last year’s NAIA tournament in Kansas City, Mo., and top scorer Tom Turner through graduation but have two blue chip transfer students to go String may end for Cowboys By United Press International The Dallas Cowboys have appeared in the National Football League playoffs for the last eight years but that string could end Sunday against, of all people, the Houston Oilers. The Cowboys, who lost 28-21 to Washington Sunday, are 5-5 and simply cannot afford to lose if they hope to make the playoffs for a ninth straight time. St. Louis leads the National Conference East with an 8-2 record and Washington is 7-3. There is very little love lost between Houston and Dallas, Texas’ pro clubs, and it has manifested itself over the years EDUCATION: Associate in Arts Degree from Gordon Military College. ELECT VIRGIL BROWN NOVEMBER 26 "A Young Man... An Effective Worker” (Paid Political Adv.) ~~ along with regular guard Edmonds. Stroud, along with Sam Christian, a 6-8, 260-pound junior college transfer student, are two newcomers Kaiser is counting on to make the Braves a contender. Christian was voted the outstanding junior college player in Georgia last year and Stroud was voted the outstanding high school player in Chicago his senior year. Valdosta State is also expect ed to field a strong contender with regulars Don Reason, who averaged 24.6 ppg last year, 6-6 Kenny Alston and guard Larry Miller returning. Augusta will depend on 6-7 Mike Shea who scored at a 16.1 clip last year to improve on its 1974 fourth place finish. James Mitchell, who ave raged 20 rebounds a game last year will return for Columbus who finished in fifth place last year. Southern Tech was hit hard by graduation and conference coaches have picked the Tech men to finish last in the conference again this year. Conference coaches have picked North Georgia to win the Georgia Intercollegiate Ath letic Conference. The Saints, second in the GIAC last year, returns four regulars, including 6-5 senior forward Jim Hyder, the leading conference scorer the past two years, from the team that won the post-season conference tournament and lost with a number of fights, both on the field and in the stands. The big difference this year is that Houston is playing winning football. The Oilers were 1-13 the past two years but have won four in a row to pull to 5-5 this season and actually have an outside shot at a wild card berth in the American Conference. “The Oilers have improved every week and right now they’re playing as well as anyone,” Staubach said. “They’ve got a lot of things going for them now and that makes for a great attitude. They believe they can win. We’re not out of it (the playoffs) but we can’t think VIRGIL BROWN CANDIDATE FOR SHERIFF of PIKE COUNTY QUALIFICATIONS: AGE: 30 years to National champion West Georgia in the finals of the NAIA District 25 tournment. Shorter College is picked to finish second with last year’s champion in third place. Shorter returns three starters from last year’s team. The Hawks will depend on 6-4 senior Elgin Kendall who scored at a 21.5 points per game average to lead them to the conference championship. Morris Williams (17.2 ppg and 11 rebounds) should regain his eligiblity for the second semester. Another starter back for the Hawks is Lanny Hamilton who averaged 10.7 points per game last year. LaGrange returns three starters from last year, includ ing 6-7 Floyd Mack, and guards David Rainey and Terry Kingston. LaGrange is expected to build its team around Mack, the leading rebounder and the second leading scorer in the GIAC last year. Berry, with four starters returning, was picked to finish fourth, Georgia Southwestern, with all-conference Calvin Hunter returning, is picked for fifth place. Oglethorpe, returning to the GIAC after a long absence, is picked for sixth, with Piedmont College and Georgia College tabbed for seventh and eight respectively. about a rematch with Washing ton or anybody else.” The Cowboys play Washing ton again on Thanksgiving Day but a loss to Houston would make that game practically meaningless for Dallas. In other games Sunday, Minnesota is at Los Angeles, Detroit is at Oakland, St. Louis meets the New York Giants at New Haven, Conn., Miami is at the New York Jets, Phila delphia at Washington, Buffalo at Cleveland, San Diego at Green Bay, Kansas City at Cincinnati, New England at Baltimore, Chicago at Detroit and Atlanta at San Francisco.
