Jets 17 Dolphins 14
Namath aids Buffalo Bills
By FRED DOWN
UPI Sports Writer
The Los Angeles Rams have
a National Football League
division title virtually clinched
thanks to James Harris’ ac
curacy while the Buffalo Bills
have new hope for their playoff
berth thanks to Joe Namath’s
moxie.
Harris threw an eight-yard
touchdown pass to Jack Snow
with 1:14 left Sunday giving the
Rams a 20-17 victory over the
Minnesota Vikings. The Rams
will clinch the Western title in
the NFC Monday night if the
Pittsburgh Steelers, who are
seven-point favorites, defeat the
New Orleans Saints.
The Bills just managed to
squidge past the Cleveland
Browns, 15-10, but were handed
a new shot at their division title
when Namath came through in
the final minutes to give the
New York Jets a 17-14 triumph
over the two-time Super Bowl
champion Miami Dolphins. The
Bills and Dolphins go into the
final three weeks of the season
with identical 8-3 records.
The St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the New York Giants,
23-21, the Denver Broncos upset
the Oakland Raiders 20-17, the
Detroit Lions whipped the
Chicago Bears 34-17, the Green
Bay Packers routed the San
Diego Chargers 34-0, the New
England Patriots topped the
Baltimore Colts 27-17, the
Dallas Cowboys shut out the
Houston Oilers 10-0, the Cincin
nati Bengals romped over the
Kansas City Chiefs 33-6, the
Washington Redskins outscored
the Philadelphia Eagles 26-7,
and the San Francisco 49ers
rolled over the Atlanta Falcons
27-0, in Sunday’s other games.
The Steelers have all the
motivation they need on the
Monday night TV game since a
victory over the Saints would
put them to within one win in

when Jim Bakken kicked his

Auburn, Tide
match has
bowl flavor
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
Southeastern Conference
teams will play in seven post
season bowl games this year,
but only one of those will be of
as much interest in the
Southeast as next Friday’s
regular-season clash between
top-ranked Alabama and sixth
ranked Auburn.
The one bowl that will draw
more attention in the Southeast
than the nationally televised
Alabama-Auburn game will be
the Alabama-Notre Dame re
match, being held in the
Orange Bowl New Year’s night.
The unbeaten Alabama Crim
son Tide is favored to complete
its third perfect regular season
in four years, and win an
unprecedented fourth straight
Southeastern Conference foot
ball crown.
The once-beaten Auburn Tig
ers (who are going to the Gator
Bowl) is the only team to beat
Alabama in regular-season play
the past four years, pulling off
a 17-16 upset in 1972 by scoring
twice on blocked punts in the
closing minutes, and the Tigers
could earn a share of the SEC
crown by upsetting the Crimson
Tide again this year.
The remainder of the final
week schedule in the Southeast
will be played Saturday and
includes Miami at Florida,
Georgia Tech at Georgia, Utah
at Louisiana State, Ole Miss at
Tulane, Tennessee at Vander
bilt, and Florida A & M at
Tampa.
This past Saturday’s headlin
er was at Knoxville where the
Tennessee Vols knocked off the
Kentucky Wildcats, 24-7, to win
a berth opposite llth-ranked
Maryland (the Atlantic Coast
Conference champ) in the
Liberty Bowl, at Memphis Dec.
16.
In other SEC-involved games,
Sun Bowl-bound Mississippi
State completed its most
successful season since 1946 by
beating Ole Miss, 31-13; Peach
Bowl-bound Vanderbilt assured
its best season since 1955 by
crushing Louisville, 44-0; and
Louisiana State nipped Tulane,
24-22.
In other weekend action,
Miami of Florida beat Syracu
se, 14-7; South Carolina lost, 39-
21, to Clemson in Paul Dietzel’s
Bilennikoff for Oakland’s touch
downs. The Raiders had al
ready clinched the division
title.
Lions 34 Bears 17
Punt returns of 38 and 58
yards by Dick Jauron led to
two touchdowns for the Lions,
who moved steadily on the
ground to beat the Bears easily.
The Lions, scoring their most
points in a game this season,
had a 34-3 lead before the
Bears scored their first touch
down. Altie Taylor gained 80
yards rushing and scored one
touchdown for the Lions.
Packers 34 Chargers 0
John Hadi completed 14 of 22
passes for 157 yards, including
one touchdown, leading the
Packers to their highest single-
last game as coach; Houston
handed Florida State its 22nd
loss in 23 games, 23-8; Memphis
State beat Wichita, 34-10;
Southern Miss edged Tampa,
11-10; and Cincinnati beat
Chattanooga, 35-20.
Alabama, Auburn, Florida,
Georgia and Georgia Tech all
had open dates.
Sophomore Stanley Morgan
rushed for 94 yards and two
touchdowns and returned four
punts for an average of better
than 25 yards while leading
Tennessee past Kentucky for
the Vols’ fourth straight win.
Kentucky, already without
the services of SEC rushing
leader Sonny Collins who broke
a bone in his leg two weeks
ago, lost quarterback Mike
Fanuzzi via a head injury in
the second quarter.
Rockey Felker and Walter
Packer scored two touchdowns
each to pace Mississippi State
to its eighth victory of the
season. For Ole Miss, who had
the game tied 7-7 going into the
final period, the loss marked
the first time since 1942 that
the Rebels have been unable to
win a conference game all
season.
Jamie O’Rourke scored three
touchdowns to pass a Vander
bilt attack that rolled up 603
yards to give the Commodores
a league-leading average of
424.5 yards per game. The
Commodores are now 7-3 with
Tennessee to play while Peach
Bowl foe Texas Tech wound
up 6-4-1.
LSU, which will have a
break-even season if the Ben
gals beat Utah as expected,
held a 17-0 halftime lead
Saturday, but needed to run out
the clock at the end to thwart
Tulane’s comeback efforts.

straight games. The victory
gave the Redskins an 8-3 record

a bid for a Super Bowl playoff
spot, at least two games ahead
of their nearest wild card rival.

return in the 49ers’ win over
