major Canadian suppliers takes
effect Jan. 1, raising the
average price per ton for
American customers by about
$25 to approximately $260.
Further increases may be
necessary in the coming year if
the current inflationary trend
continues, according to an
industry spokesman.
Most producers cited higher
costs for wages, food, fuel,
transportation and other capital
expenses as prompting the
increases. Industry sources said
the $260 price was needed just
to keep up with cost increases.
Some said the price would
have to reach about S3OO a ton
to justify expanding facilities
and equipment.
The highest price for U.S.-
bound Canadian newsprint is
S2BO per ton, announced Nov. 20
by MacMillan Bloedel Ltd. of
Vancouver.

including Consolidated-Bathur

Lockheed
may sell
to Russ
BURBANK, Calif. (UPI) —
Lockheed Aircraft Corp, hopes
to sell the Soviet Union a
modified version of its L-1011
Tristar jumbo jet plane.
The Los Angeles Times said
Thursday that Lockheed has
made a formal proposal to the
Russians for a joint study of
future aircraft needs of the
Soviet Union. It also said
Lockheed had been trying
previously to get orders for the
L-1011 but now was proposing a
different version, the L-1011-250,
to Aeroflot, the Russian airline.
A government official in
Washington has confirmed
Lockheed’s study proposal and
said formal approval may have
to be granted by the U. S. if the
Russians accept the bid. A
government export license may
be needed before Lockheed can
go ahead.
Under the Lockheed plan, the
company would be paid a fee
for its services, and the Times
said an agreement could come
within a month.
Carter’s announcement may come in Atlanta
ATLANTA (UPI) - Gov.
Jimmy Carter will make his
official announcement of his
candidacy for the 1976 Demo
cratic presidential nomination
here Dec. 12, the Atlanta
Constitution said today.
The newspaper story said
that Carter had rejected the
recommendations of his advis
ers and decided to make the
announcement at the Atlanta
Civic Center rather than at the
National Press Club in Wa
shington.
Carter still plans to make his
Press Club speech, the story
said, but he will devote it to
national affairs, then return
here to tell local supporters
that he is a candidate for
president.
The newspaper said for that
reason, the site of the Carter
speech here was being changed
from a downtown hotel to the
more spacious Civic Center.
There were also reports that
the Soviet Union may purchase
some Boeing 747 aircraft in the
near future with the first order
possibly five to 10 of the huge
planes.

Carter aides reportedly spend
Thanksgiving Day on the
phone, notifying the governor’s
followers of the change.
A spokesman at the Civic
Center said he could not
confirm the change, referring
all calls to Frank Moore, a
Carter aide. Moore was una
vailable for comment.
The Constitution quoted a
“highly-placed source” as say
ing Carter made the change
because he felt that his home
state was the place to make
any important statements.
“He just didn’t see all those
people coming to Atlanta for
