Chorus
visits
patients
The Mixed Chorus of Spalding
Junior High I and II sang
Christmas Carols at Bright
moor Nursing Home yesterday.
The seventy-eight chorus
members were there in
response to an invitation by
Mrs. Laura Jackson, social
administrator of the home. Miss
Brenda Daniels, directress, was
in charge of the group.
The chorus sang several
Christmas Carols during the
one hour program. Two flute
players, Becky Riodan and
Martha Massey, were featured
as the chorus sang “The Carol
of the Birds and The Christ
Child.” William Pickett on the
drum, joined the flute players
as the Girls Ensemble sang
“Pat-A-Pan.”
The program concluded with
the chorus members joining the
patients in singing “Silent
Night” and “Joy to the World.”
This was followed by the dis
tribution of a hugh basket of
fruit that was donated by the
chorus members.
The chorus is preparing to
join the Spalding Junior High
Band in a Christmas Concert at
the Spalding Junior High One
auditorium Thursday,
December 19 at 7:30 p.m. 1116
band will be under the direction
of Mrs. Charlotte Turner. There
will be a small admission fee.
Chamber to have
planning breakfast
The Chamber of Commerce
will have a work program
breakfast Dec. 17 at Western
Sizzlin steak house beginning at
7:30 a.m.
Scott Searcy, president-elect,
wants members to bring their
ideas on what the Chamber
should do next year.
Reservations for the meeting
may be made at the Chamber
office.

Mrs. Knight
Mrs. Martha Stephenson
Knight, 92, of 1336 Winona
avenue died early this morning
at the Griffin-Spalding Hospital
where she had been a patient for
10 days.
Mrs. Knight was the widow of
Mr. John G. Knight. She was
bom in Henry County and had
resided in Spalding County for
70 years. Her parents were the
late John Thomas Stephenson
and the late Eleanor Conkle
Stephenson. Mrs. Knight was
the last of the charter members
of Kincaid Memorial United
Methodist Church. She was a
member of the Ladies Bible
Class of the church and a life
member of the Woman’s
Society of Christian Service.
She is survived by a daughter,
Mrs. Ezra L. Wise of Griffin; a
son, J. Lamar Knight of Griffin;
three sisters, Mrs. H. C.
Wallace of Macon, Mrs. H. M.
Ponder and Mrs. Arthur
Henderson of Hampton; five
grandchildren, Miss Reba A.
Knight, Miss Martha Sue Wise,
Bill Knight, all of Griffin, Dr.
Robert E. Knight of Columbia,
S. C., and Larry Knight of
Atlanta; one great-grandson,
Tommy Knight of Atlanta;
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be
conducted Friday afternoon at
2:30 o’clock from the Kincaid
United Methodist Church. The
Rev. Ray Stokes and the Rev.
Lamar Cherry will officiate.
Burial will be in Mt. Carmel
United Methodist Church
cemetery in Henry County. The
body will remain at Haisten
Funeral Home until carried to
the church to lie in state 30
mintues prior to the funeral
hour.
Mr. Carden
Mr. John C. Carden, 82, of
Cordele, formerly of Fayette
County and Griffin, died
Tuesday afternoon in the Crisp
County Hospital.
Funeral services were con
ducted this afternoon at 2
o’clock from the Pleasant View
Baptist Church in Wilcox
County.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Rena Roland Carden; two
sons, J. W. Carden of Cordele
and Quinton Carden of
Kissimmee, Fla.; two
daughters, Mrs. Winston Moore
of Griffin and Mrs. Johnny
McLaughlin of Jacksonville,
Fla.
Dekle Funeral Home of
Cordele was in charge of plans.
Mr. d’Antignac
Mr. Auvergne d’ Antignac of
Crescent, Ga., died in a
Brunswick hospital Wednesday
night after a lengthy illness.
Mr. d’ Antignac was division
engineer with the State High
way Department in Jessup for a
number of years. He was a
graduate of Griffin High School
and the University of Georgia.
He is survived by a son, Jack
d’ Antignac; two grandsons,
Kell and Auvergne d’ Antignac
V; and a brother Munroe d’
Antignac of Griffin.
Funeral services and burial
will be Friday in Crescent,
Mclntosh County.
Thefts
probed
A large number of household
items, including four guns and a
television-stereo-tape player
unit, were stolen in a house
burglary being investigated by
the Spalding Sheriff’s Depart
ment.
Mrs. Jo Ann Spoon of Route
Four, Sherwood Mobile Home
Park, told deputies the burglars
entered her home through a
bedroom window. The value of
the articles taken was around
$1,500, she said.
Charlie Rivers of 1044 West
College street extension
complained that someone broke
into his pickup truck while he
was in die Waffle House last
night and stole a 410 gauge
shotgun.
Someone stole the battery
from Mrs. Tom Bickley’s car
yesterday. The auto was parked
at a doctor’s office on Eighth
street where she is employed.
Larry Kilgore of Route Three,
Fayetteville, said he parked his
car at the New Salem Baptist
Church and while he was in the
church, someone stole an AM
FM converter from the auto.
Mr. Strozier
Funeral services for Mr.
Tethine Strozier of Miami, Fla.,
formerly of Pike County, will be
held Saturday afternoon in
Miami, Fla.
He was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Ed Strozier of Concord.
Rainge Funeral Home of
Miami is in charge of plans.
New club
wants 40
for charter
Organizers of an Optimist
Club in Griffin hope to have 40
charter members.
The next organizational
meeting will be next Tuesday at
7:30 p.m. in the community
room of Commercial Bank &
Trust Co.
Attending the initial meeting
this week were Chuck Anders,
Denny Betz, Wayland Foote,
Don Hutcherson, Paul
Lawrence, Tom Snider, Doug
Tingle and Jerry Williamson.
Jim Aldridge, past lieutenant
governor of Zone Six; Paul
Jones, president, Dwayne
Conkle and Charles Storey of
the Newnan Club attended and
outlined the operation of Op
timist Clubs.
Dr. Flora named
assoc, professor
Dr. Lewis Franklin Flora has
been approved by the Univer
sity System of Georgia Board of
Regents as an assistant
professor of food science at the
Georgia Station of the Univer
sity of Georgia College of
Agriculture Experiment
Stations.
Flora received his 8.5., M.S.,
and Ph. D. degrees in food
science from the University of
Maryland. He is a native of
Frederick, Md.
He has been employed in the
food regulations division of the
U. S. Food and Drug Ad
ministration in Washington,
D.C., and previously was em
ployed as a research associate
by the department of horticul
ture of the University of Mary
land.
Flora is a member of the
Institute of Food Technologists.

Feltman cleared
in Pike County
The Pike County Grand Jury
no-billed a burglary charge
against Tony W. Feltman of
Griffin.
Feltman had been accused of
burglarizing the Mt. Gilead
Baptist Church in Pike County
in June.
Three others who also were
charged with the burglary have
been convicted and are serving
prison sentences, according to
Pike Sheriff Ronald Copeland.
The no-bill by the Pike Grand
Jury means that Feltman was
cleared of the charges placed
against him.

AUSTIN, Tex. (UPI) —
According to the Texas
Aeronautics Commissioner, the
state in 1973 had 1,201 airports
—more than any other state.
These included 270 municipally
owned airports, 126 heliports,
three seaplane ports and 802
privately owned airports.
