NEW YORK (UPI) — One
time free agent Jim Hart, who
directed the Cardinals to their
first playoff appearance in 26
years and the first since the
franchise moved from Chicago
to St. Louis in 1960, was a
runaway choice for quarterback
today on the United Press
International’s 1974 National
Football Conference All Star
team.
Hart, who was signed by the
Cardinals as a free agent upon
his graduation from Southern
Illinois in 1966, easily beat out
runnerup Fran Tarkenton of
Central Division champion Min
nesota for the quarterback spot.
Hart, who leads the NFC in
touchdown passes this season
with 18, outpolled Tarkenton 30-
8 in balloting by a nationwide
panel of 39 sports writers, three
from each conference city.
Billy Kilmer of Washington
drew the remaining quarter
back vote.
Joining Hart on the All Star
squad was teammate Roger
Wehrli, who led all cornerbacks

Blue-Gray game
going unnoticed
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (UPI)
— Preparations for the 37th
annual Blue-Gray Game lum
bered on last week virtually
unnoticed by the public.
The sentiment of the locals
seemed to be wrapped up in
comments by one avid Alaba
ma football fan: “You sure
aren’t hearing much about the
Blue-Gray Game this year,” he
said. “I didn’t think they were
having it until I saw a little
someting about it in the paper
yesterday.
“I remember when it used to
be a big thing. Now I think TV
is all that keeps them alive.
When the TV drops them I
think they’ll go under.”
Part of the lack of local
interest is that Auburn and
Alabama are both sending
teams to bowls, and have for
the past few years, so that none
of their players participate in
the Blue-Gray Game.
The Blueklray also has
trouble attracting name players
because players from the big
schools are going to other
bowls. Only one team out of the
UPI top 10, Michigan, sent any
players to the Blue-Gray this
year.
In fact, the Blue-Gray game
has turned into an arena for
players whose teams don’t go
to bowls. Michigan has 12
players on the North squad,
providing much of the Blue
offensive power, and Oklahoma
has two.

the Blue-Gray, but many of
them won’t be at the game.
Last year one scout was in the
press box.
Last year 29 of the 54 players
who were in the Blue-Gray
game were drafted by pro
teams, but the scouts apparent
ly made up their minds before
either squad took the field.
“The scouts want to see the
players in practice,” said a
spokesman for the Blue-Gray
Association. “They come see
the boys run; measure them up
and then most of them don’t
bother to go to the game.”
Last year, in fact, Jack
Christiasen of Stanford, the
North coach, left the game with
two minutes to play. The Blues
eventually won 26-14.
The Blues are expected to
win again this year because the
Blue squad ended up with most
of the offensive stars and the
Grays got most of the
outstanding defensive players.
When South Coach Dave
Smith of Southern Methodist
tried to use the wishbone
offense he found he didn’t have
the personnel to run it.
The Blue-Gray Association
said it sold over 21,000 tickets
to last year’s game. But the
tickets were often bought in
blocks by businesses which
handed them out to employes.
With a chilling December wind
blowing last year, a generous
estimate would have put the
crowd just over half that total.
Honors given

University of Southern Califor
nia’s Pat Haden captured four

McKeever Award as his team’s
Most Valuable Player, at the

inspirational player, the senior
with the highest culmulative
