Flames
The Atlanta Flames, mired in the longest losing streak
in the club’s history, bowed to the tough Philadelphia
Flyers three-to-two last night in Atlanta. Rick MacLeaish
scored the winning goal for Philadelphia with less than
two minutes left in the game. Curt Bennett and Buster
Harvey got the Atlanta goals while Reggie Leach and Bob
Kelly scored the other flyer goals. The loss dropped the
Flames 11 points behind Philadelphia in the N.H.L.
Division one.
Tech
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets won the “Battle of
Atlanta” last night defeating Georgia State 80 to 74 in a
game played at Tech. Mike Green scored 19 points to pace
the Jackets to their first win of the year while Mike
Bottorf had 13. Georgia State’s James Atkinson led all
scorers with 23. Tech is now one-and-two while Georgia
State is two-and-three.
Playoffs
Sid Sprewell ran for two touchdowns and passed for
another last night to lead Carrollton to a 28 to 21 victory
over North Springs for the State Class A high school
football championship. Sprewell scored on runs of four
and three yards and passed nine yards to Alfred Mclntosh
for another tally. Quarterback Skip Ramsey plunged one
yard for one North Springs touchdown and threw 71 yards
to Phil Connell for another.

football coach Friday and
elevated basketball coach
Frank McGuire.
Dietzel, who resigned as head
football coach earlier but
planned to stay on as athletic
director, was dumped from the
athletic department entirely.
Carlen and McGuire were
named associate athletic direc
tors.
Harold “Bo” Hagen, Dietzel’s
administrative assistant, was
given the title of athletic
director. But, the school’s
announcement said, Dietzel and
McGuirre will not report to
him, but to university President
Dr. William Patterson.
This apparently meant that
Hagen would be director of
everything but football and
basketball.
Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks will try to bounce back from a loss
when they host the defending N.B.A. Champion Boston
Celtics tonight. The Hawks bowed to Golden State 129 to
109 in their last action Thursday night. Boston nipped the
Hawks earlier in the year in Atlanta and the Celtics will be
stronger this time with the return of center Dave Cowens
who missed the first game with an injury.
Girls
The Warren County girls basketball team put on the
defense after the first quarter in last night’s game with
Taliaferro County. Warren County allowed three field
goals in the first quarter but that was all the Taliaferro
County girls could muster. The final score, Warren
County 111, Taliaferro County 6.
Hertwig
ATHENS — Southeastern Football Magazine has
named Georgia’s Craig Hertwig on its All-South first team
at offensive tackle. Two Bulldogs made the second team,
place-kicker Allan Leavitt who is a Floridian and corner
back Steve Taylor of Savannah.
USC board chairman T.
Eston Marchant announced in
an afternoon news conference
Friday Carlen had been signed
as head football coach for the
Gamecocks, while Dietzel was
being named to a newly created
position of vice president for
university relations.
It was not known if Dietzel
would accept the new position .
Dietzel served nine years as
athletic director and football
coach and his announcement
earlier this year that he was
stepping down as football coach
touched off a power struggle
within the USC athletic depart
ment.
“The refinements and sophis
tications which would apply to
all these announcements we
would prefer to disseminate at
another time,” Marchant said.
He said Carlen had signed a
five year contract with South
Carolina and his aides would be
in Columbia Dec. 16 to begin
recruiting. Marchant would not
disclose the salary given
Carlen. Dietzel, who has never
been able to get the university
football program going, had
been previously offered the job
of athletic director by the board
for an unspecified time but the
board soon found itself involved
in a power clash involving
Carlen and McGuire, both of
whom demanded the director’s
job.
McGuire, who has taken
South Carolina basketball to
national prominence, made a
vocal bid for the athletic
director’s job after it was said
Carlen would not accept the
head football coaching job
without the athletic director’s
job.
Carlen received a 10-year
contract with tenure from
Texas Tech two years ago and
was making $32,000 annually
plus added benefits, after
posting a 10-1 record last year,
he was named UPI coach of the
year in the Southwest Conferen
ce.
Carlen guided Texas Tech to
a 6-4-1 record this year and will
play Vanderbuilt Dec. 28 in the
Peach Bowl, their fourth bowl
game under Carlen.

ATLANTA — Flyers’ leftwing Dave Schultz (8) had a bad night of it as Atlanta’s Jean
Lemieux (6) gives him a round-house right to the head, knocking his helmet off. He drew
penalties for holding Lemieux, fighting and a game misconduct penalty, being thrown out of
the game in first period action. Schultz has 164 minutes of penalties for the season so far, not
counting tonights. The Flyers won, 3-2. (UPI)

Falcons
The Falcon-Packer game on Sunday, a nationally
televised event, will have at least two new starters. The
Falcons say runningback Art Malone will be replaced by
Vince Kendrick in the backfield while Nick Bebout will
start in offensive tackle Len Gotshalk’s spot. Malone and
Gotshalk are not injured. The team just wants to give the
two a chance to show what they can do.
Van Brocklin
The former head coach of the Atlanta Falcons — Norm
Van Brocklin—may not be a man without a team for very
long. The Milwaukee Journal reported yesterday that Van
Brocklin may be in line for the top job with the Green Bay
Packer. The Packers are in Atlanta today preparing to
meet the Western Division, cellar-dwelling, Falcons on
Sunday. The match will be the last of the season for both
teams.
Van Brocklin’s name is being mentioned along with
those of former Green Bay quarterback Bart Star and
world football league coach Jack Pardee. Pardee coached
at Florida this past season. The present coach of the
Packers — Dan Devine — only has one year left on his
five-year contract and has run into trouble with Packer
President Dominic Olejniczak. The apparent problem
seems to be the team’s winning... or lack of it. Olejniczak
has indicated he will give an announcement on Tuesday as
to whether Devine will be heading the squad next year or
not.

Philadelphia goal. Reggie
Leach tied the game 1-1 by

It was the 11th consecutive
game in which Leach has
scored a point or more, tying
the Philadelphia team record.
He has 12 goals in that streak.
Atlanta took a 2-1 lead in the
second period when Buster
Harvey scored on a sweeping
backhand. Bob Kelly tied the

game by tipping in a pass from

Braves
The Atlanta Braves say next year’s reserved tickets will
cost 50 per cent more than they did this past season. The
ticket price increase was announced yesterday by Braves
General Manager Eddie Robinson who said the hike was
necessary because of the club’s rising operational costs.
The new reserved ticket prices will be five dollars for
adults and three dollars for children 12 and under in the
field level. General admission will, however, remain the
same: two dollars for adults and one dollar for children.
The 1974 season saw just under one-million paid fans came
to see the Braves at Atlanta Stadium.
Bulldogs
ATHENS — Georgia’s football Bulldogs have been idle
11 days since their regular season finale with Georgia
Tech. But they have resumed practice for the December
21st battle against Miami of Ohio in the Tangerine Bowl in
Orlando. Junior safety-man David Schwak was back in
uniform when practices picked up again Thursday and
trainer Warren Morris says he should be ready for the
bowl game. The Pennsylvania product missed clashes
against Auburn and Tech due to an appendectomy.
Meantime, Head Coach Vince Dooley says offensive
guard Charles Stapleton of Douglas and linebacker David
Wolfe of Stamford, Connecticut “have worked hard
throughout their Georgia careers and deserve” a trip to
the Tangerine Bowl.
