Packers, Falcons
may fire coaches
GREEN BAY, Wis. (UPI) -
The Green Bay Packers write
their final chapter for the 1974
season against the Falcons in
Atlanta Sunday, but the epi
logue will be handled back here
early next week by the club’s
executive committee.
The Packers and Falcons are
both ending a frustrating
season and both their head
coaches are in danger of losing
their jobs.
The Packers are hoping to
finish with a 7-7 record. None of
them is more frustrated than
head coach and general manag
er Dan Devine whose job is on
the line.
The executive committee will
sit down sometime after Sun
day’s game and decide Devi
ne’s future with the club. He
has one year to go on a five
year contract and he said
earlier this week that he
intended to honor it.
Carrollton wins
class A crown
CARROLLTON, Ga. (UPI) -
Sidney Sprewell ran for two
touchdowns and passed for
another Friday night to lead
Carrollton High School to a 28-
21 victory over North Springs
High School in the State Class
A football championship game.
Sprewell, who combined with
running back Bobby Favers
for 219 of Carrollton’s 236 yards
total offense, ran four yards for
a touchdown in the first quarter
to tie the score 7-7.

romance dies down
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
(UPI) — The storybook ro
mance between the king and
queen of tennis, Jimmy Con
nors and Chris Evert, has “died
down.”
Young Chris confirmed Fri
day that she had taken off her
diamond ring after an engage
ment that was disclosed last
summer.
“Yes, I don’t have the ring
now,” she said. “We agreed it
would be better if I didn’t wear
it. People can say anything
they want —l’ll just say our
romance has died down.”
Chris, who will be 20 next
week, and Jimmy, 22, bought
the big diamond a year ago in
South Africa, right after they
each had won the Open title
there.
The wedding date was later

Packers President Dominic
Olejniczak said he would have
an announcement Tuesday on
whether Devine will be back
next year.
Devine was hired from the
University of Missouri in 1971
and has compiled a 25-26-4
record with the Packers after a
distinguished career as a
college coach. His 1972 Packers
won the NFC Central Division
crown but last year they
slipped to a 5-7-2 record and
Devine has had troubles ever
since.
The players, before leaving
for Atlanta, had a closed
meeting to decide whether to
issue a joint statement on
behalf of their coach.
Unanimity was lacking, howe
ver, and it was decided that the
players instead should make
individual statements.
“We wanted to see if we
could get team support,” said
North Springs Bob Chamber
lain had run 28 yards for the
Spartans’ only lead in the
game.
Sprewell dashed in from
three yards out in the second
quarter to stake the Trojans to
a 14-7 lead, then passed nine
yards to Alfred Mclntosh for
Carrollton’s 21-7 halftime lead.
Chuck Ragsdale kicked all four
extra points for the Trojans.
North Springs, located in
suburban Sandy Springs, rallied
set for Nov. 8, but early this
fall, Chris’ father, Jimmy
Evert, announced the marriage
had been postponed indefinitely,
although he said the two were
still in love.
“We’re just so busy now we
don’t have time to get
married,” Miss Evert explained
Friday. “We haven’t even
talked about it lately.”
Connors had said earlier,
“We both have our careers, you
understand, and like last month
when I was playing in South
Africa, Chris was playing in
Japan. That’s no way to start a
marriage, is it?
“We both agreed it would be
wise to wait —not to rush it.”
Connors won both at Wimble
don and the U.S. Open at
Forest Hills this year and Chris
was the Wimbledon winner.
tight end Rich McGeorge, one
of the organizers of the
meeting. “There were 47 guys
there and we didn’t feel that we
could come out with a united
statement. That’s why we said
we’d voice our opinions in
dividually.”
McGeorge, linebackers Fred
Carr and Ted Hendricks, split
end Jon Staggers, cornerback
Willie Buchanon and running
back MacArthur Lane were
among those who did express
support tor Devine.
Hendricks, in fact, hinted that
he might not sign with Green
Bay next season if Devine is
fired. Hendricks has already
signed with the now-defunct
Jacksonville club of the World
Football League, but his
contract status is in doubt and,
at least as far as the NFL is
concerned, he will be a free
in the second half on the
running and passing of Skip
Ramsey. Ramsey dove over
from the one and later passed
71 yards to Phil Connell for late
touchdowns.
Both Carrollton and North
Springs entered the game with
12-1 records.
The State Class AAA, AA and
B football champions will be
determined in games Saturday
night.
They have been named top
male and female tennis players
of the year.
It was after they both won
Wimbledon this year that their
engagement was announced.
Pictures of the smiling, attrac
tive young couple dancing at
the Wimbledon ball were
carried in newspapers and
magazines around the world.
The young couple said at that
time that when they were
married they would continue
their tennis, but would only
play in tournaments where they
could be together. Now, Chris
has committed herself more
fully to the women’s circuit.

“I’m anticipating a breach of
contract with the WFL,”
Hendricks said. “I would have
to say that if he is relieved of
his duties as head coach and
general manager, I would be

McGeorge said indications

that Devine was going to be

“I hate to see it happen to

kind of taking credit for

coach all the credit, maybe
even trying to get rid of him.”

HOUSTON (UPI) — Coach
Bill Yeoman dismissed his
Houston Cougar football players
for the weekend but his starting
quarterback expected to spend
some of the time throwing the
football.
“I wasn’t sharp at all today,”
sophomore Bubba McGallion
said after Friday’s practice.
The Cougars, 8-3, play North
Carolina State, 9-2, in the Astro-
Bluebonnet Bowl Monday, Dec.
23.
Despite McGallion’s probelms
throwing, Yeoman seemed
pleased with his team’s two
practices this week.
“Our conditioning seems to
be good,” he said.
McGallion’s backfield Friday
included sophomore fullback
John Housman, halfback Mar
shall Johnson, flanker Frank
Scalise and split end Eddie
Foster, a freshman.
Junior quarterback David
Husmann threw well while
directing the second offense.
The Cougars will resume
workouts Monday.

White expects Vols to test him
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (UPI) —
Randy White, Maryland’s con
sensus All-American defensive
tackle, has gotten used to backs
running away from him, but he
doesn’t expect that to happen in
Monday night’s Liberty Bowl.
“Tennessee has a powerful
offense with (quarterback
Condredge) Holloway and (tail
back Stanley) Morgan,” the 6-4,
248-pound Outland Trophy win
ner said shortly after he and
his teammates arrived in
Memphis Friday.
“They’re a good, strong
team,” White said. “I look for
them to run at me...kinda try
me out.”
If the Vols decide to run
toward right end, they will
encounter another formidable
obstacle—defensive end Leroy
Hughes.
“I’ve kinda gotten used to
most teams going away from
Randy and coming at me,” the
5-9 junior said, “but it really
hasn’t done them much good to
run away from him. He’s so
fast that he catches a lot of
backs from behind.”
Hughes actually is too mo
dest, White said. “Leroy plays
a pretty good defensive end.
He’s a short guy, but he likes to
imagine that he’s 6-2,” White
continued.
The Terps are to hold their
first practice session in Mem
phis today. Another workout is
