Widow happy
in new place
By JOHN T. WATTS
Copley News Service
Dear John:
I have been reading and en
joying your comments on let
ters from older people (I re
fuse to call them senior citi
zens) in our newspaper for
some time.
But I can’t agree on your
comments on older people go
ing to live in a new place. I
don’t think that one’s age has
nearly as much to do with
such a situation as the type of
person you are and always
have been. And having done it
most successfully myself, I
feel somewhat qualified to
speak.
When I retired 12 years ago
(my husband had died about
six years before that) I came,
as I-had planned for a long
‘time, to Southern California.
For two reasons: I had for
years found the winters in
western New York harder and
harder to take, and the second
was that most of my family
were now out here. But I came
to Hermosa Beach, knowing
absolutely no one except my
children (who then lived in
Manhattan Beach) to make
an entirely new life for my
self.
When friends in the East
asked me if I didn’t find the
idea of going to live, where I
had no friends or acquaint
ances, hard and alarming, my
answer was that I had lived in
a number of different cities in
my life, and made close
friends wherever I had lived.
And that I had never heard
California was a difficult
place to get acquainted. I
knew that I was going to enjoy
being near my children and
grandchildren at last, but I
also realized that their lives
and interests would be quite
different from mine, and that
I must make my own place in
the community.
As for how well I have suc
ceeded, I will merely say that
the last three or four years I
have spent trying to extricate
myself from a lot of the jobs
and organizations I have
worked in so that I could have,
some time to spend on various
types of art work that I enjoy
doing.
It wasn’t easy. I don’t know
why it is that everyone seems
to think I am so much more
capable of doing everything
and anything than I think I
am! But I finally succeeded
and have had a happy time
this past year making a bed
spread for a friend in em
broidery, with original de
signs of course. And my gar
den has certainly improved
since I had more time for it.
And I have had more time to
cultivate friendships than I
did when I was attending a
board meeting of this or that
once a week.
Os course, I realize that I
can’t expect to always contin
ue to enjoy my present health,
but the director of our church
home said once he was sure I
would be happy when I came
there. He said a very interest
ing thing then, after asking
me if I had not always enjoyed
life and living. And, thinking
over the ups and downs of ex
istence, I agreed I had.
Then he said that he had ob
served that the people who
were bored and lonely, and
disappointed and unhappy
when they were old, had al
ways been that way. People,
he said, really don’t change
much as they grow older. It’s
just that your chief character
istics show up more plainly. —
Carolyn Williams.
Dear Carolyn:
It’s a delight to get a happy
letter from a well-adjusted
person. I don’t think we dis
agree too much on where re
tired persons should live.
