Stores
open
Sunday
Several Griffin stores will be
open tomorrow afternoon, now
that a local court order has been
issued against prosecution of
cases involving the Common
Day of Rest Act.
Several judges around the
state have questioned the
constitutionality of the law and
a decision on it by the State
Supreme Court is in the works.
Stores were open in Griffin for
the first time on Sunday after
noon last week, following the
court rulings.
Some had been open on
Sundays before the Day of Rest
Act became law but had closed
after Spalding County came
under it.
Beaverbrook
has program
on Christmas
The program, “A Christmas
Carol” by Charles Dickens was
presented at the December
meeting of Beaverbrook PTA.
The program was given by
Mr. Brinson, Mrs. Huddleston
and Miss Pullins’ reading
classes. The costumes and
props were designed and made
by Mr. Brinson.
The meeting was held in the
school cafetorium with the
president, Mrs. Margaret
Boggs, presiding.
The group voted to purchase 24
clocks for classrooms.
Hobie Davenport’s class won
first place in the PTA member
ship drive. Miss Linda May’s
class won second.
Joe Brinson’s sixth grade won
the room count.

Mr. Weldon
Funeral services for Mr.
George T. Weldon of old Macon
road were held this afternoon at
2:30 from the chapel of Pittman-
Rawls Funeral Home.
The Rev. Lamar Cherry of
ficiated.
Burial was in Oak Hill
cemetery.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Wilma Washbum Weldon
of Griffin, two sisters, Mrs.
Jesse O. Futral of Griffin and
Mrs. Florence Weldon Smith of
Decatur; two brothers, Lewis
Weldon of Stone Mountain and
Robert A. Weldon of Griffin;
several sisters-in-law, among
them Mrs. Phillip Weldon of
Griffin, several nieces and
nephews.
Mrs. Glanton
Mrs. Bertie Mae Crane
Glanton, 66, of Thomaston,
formerly of Pike County, died
Friday at Crawford W. Long
Hospital in Atlanta.
Funeral services will be held
Sunday at 2 p.m. at East
Thomaston Baptist Church. The
Rev. Don Hammons will of
ficiate. Burial will be in Upson
Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Carl H. Brown of
Thomaston; two sisters, Mrs.
Hugh Jones and Mrs. Roscoe
Williams, both of Zebulon; two
brothers, William P. Crane of
Zebulon and Joel A. Crane of
Stone Mountain and a grandson.
Pasley Fletcher Funeral
Home of Thomaston is in charge
of arrangements.
Mr. Mann
Funeral services for Mr. Jim
Mann of 615 Northside drive,
Griffin, formerly of Pike
County, will be held tomorrow
at 3 p.m. from Old Mt. Calvary
Baptist Church, Concord.
The Rev. M. Davis will of
ficiate. Burial will be in the
church cemetery.
The body was carried to
Union Society Funeral Home
this morning to lie in state until
the funeral.
Survivors include two sisters,
Mrs. Mattie Hayes of Griffin
and Mrs. Ruby Hunt of Paten
ville, Ga.
The cortege will form at the
residence of Mrs. Ruby Hunt at
Patenville at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
McDowell United Funeral
Home is in charge of plans.
Mr. Reid
Funeral services for Mrs.
Essie Dixon Reid of Concord
will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m.
from the Mt. Olive Baptist
Church at Molena. The Rev. H.
G. Glanton will officiate. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Gertrude Hubbard of
Chester, Pa.; two sisters, Mrs.
Louise Alford of Height Town,
N. J., Mrs. Beatrice Reynolds of
Griffin; a brother, Eddie Pete
Dixon of Concord, a grandson,
Vernon Hutcherson of Chester,
Pa., two great grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.
The cortege will form at the
residence at noon tomorrow.
Union Society Funeral Home
of Concord is in charge of plans.
Wisteria has
Yule lunch
The Wisteria Garden Club
held its Christmas luncheon at
Eleven Acres.
Members were shown 133
bars of soap which were hand
decorated in Christmas designs
by Mrs. Marvin Goldstein. The
soap will be given to patients at
Brightmoor Medical Care
Center.
The luncheon tables were
decorated with Christmas
arrangements made by Mrs.
Charles Moore, Mrs. Jim Dun
away, Mrs. Otis Blake, Jr., Mrs.
Gordon Milling, Sr., Mrs. J. O.
Futral and Mrs. Jerry Hollberg.
Mrs. Jim Strong presided in
the absence of the president,
Mrs. C. A. Knowles.
The invocation was given by
Mrs. Otis Blake, Jr.
Mrs. Polly Parker was
welcomed as a new member.
Guests were Mrs. Alice Blake,
Mrs. Edna White, Mrs. Virginia
Freeman, Mrs. Jan Rogers and
Mrs. J. P. Mason.
Mrs. Williams
Mrs. Elizabeth Cleveland
Williams, 67, of 156 North
Mulberry street, Jackson, Ga.,
died early this morning at
Georgia Baptist Hospital in
Atlanta.
She was a native of Henry
County, daughter of the late
Walter Cleveland and the late
Temple Jane Cleveland.
She had made her home in
Jackson for several years. She
was a member of the Cedar
Rock Congregational Church.
In addition to her husband,
survivors include a son, Eugene
Williams; two sisters, Mrs.
Marvin Davis of Avondale
Estates and Mrs. Glenn Rosser
of Hapeville; three brothers,
O’Dell Cleveland, Locust
Grove, George Cleveland of
Columbus and Lonnie Cleveland
of Avondale Estates.
Funeral services will be
conducted in Haisten Chapel in
Jackson Sunday afternoon at
2:30. The Rev. Gilbert Ham
mond and the Rev. Harvey
Craft will officiate. Burial will
be in Cedar Rock cemetery.

Choirs plan
cantata
Sunday night
The senior choirs of First
Assembly of God Church will
present a Christmas cantata
Sunday night beginning at 7
o’clock in the church sanctuary.
The cantata is entitled “Bom
A King.”

Mathis Club
gets award
The Louise Mathis Garden
Club met at Eleven Acres for
the December meeting.
Christmas decorations were
used on the tables.
It was announced that the
club received a certificate of
recognition for attendance at
the Redbud annual district
meeting.
Mrs. W. M. Brooks, president,
introduced the guests and gave
the invocation.
Thirteen members and eleven
guests were present.
