Unclean equipment
caused infections
of heart patients
ATLANTA (UPI) - Con
taminated equipment used to
monitor blood pressure caused
eight critically ill heart surgery
patients to contact a blood
infection in a Georgia hospital
recently.
An account of the incident
was contained in the most
recent publication of the
national Center for Disease
Control’s weekly Morbidity and
Mortality Report, and con
firmed by the state Health
Department.
The patients, who contacted
the bacterial infection in the
hospital’s intensive care unit,
were treated with antibiotics
and recovered. Use of the
contaminated device, a trans
ducer employed to monitor
blood pressure, was discon
tinued.
Dr. John McCroan, head of
the epidemiology section of the
state ' Health Department,
refused to identify the hospital.

He said publication of the name
of the hospital would serve no
public good.
Seven of the eight patients had
undergone coronary artery
bypass surgery for treatment of
angina pectoris. The other
patient had a heart valve
replaced.
The outbreak occurred be
tween October 23 and Novem
ber 15, one to three days after
operation. Eight of the 35
patients in the unit became ill
and ran fevers of 103 degrees or
higher.
The hospital reported the
outbreak, according to assistant
state epidemiologist Thomas
McKinley, and asked for help in
tracking down the source of the
contamination.He said several
days of detective work revealed
that the source was the
transducers, a cardiovascular
device connected directly to the
patient’s blood system by
catheters.
“Once the blood pressure
monitoring stopped, these pa
tients cleared up automatical
ly,”he said.
The CDC said that “as the
use of pressure transducers for
monitoring critically-ill patients
increases, it is important that
personnel sterilize transducers,
preferably by the appropriate
use of ethylene oxide or
gluteraldehyde sterilization. ’’
It said the Georgia outbreak
was the second it has investi
gated this year in which
contaminated transducers were
implicated as the source of
infection.
