Saxbe nominated for India post
WASHINGTON (UPI) - At
torney General William B.
Saxbe, the former Ohio senator
who succeeded Elliot Richard
son as the nation’s top law
enforcer less than one year
ago, resigned Friday and was
nominated to be U.S. ambassa
dor to India.
Saxbe’s resignation, which
becomes effective upon confir
mation of his successor or of
his ambassadorship, was the
first in an expected major
Cabinet realignment anticipated
within the next two months.
The former Ohio attorney
general will succeed Daniel
Patrick Moynihan, a Nixon
appointee, who plans to return
to the Harvard faculty after a
two year stint as ambassador
to India.
Saxbe said President Ford
offered him the new post
Monday.
White House press secretary
Ron Nessen refused to com
ment on reports that Ford will
nominate University of Chicago
President Edward H. Levi to
succeed Saxbe.
It was learned that Senate
Judicary Committee Chairman
James O. Eastland, D-Miss.,
and Sen. Roman L. Hruska, R-
Neb., told Ford they opposed
Levi when they visited the
White House Thursday.
Saxbe took office Jan. 4, 1974,
replacing acting Attorney Gen
eral Robert H. Bork who took
over the top Justice Depart
ment job Oct. 20, 1973. Elliot L.
Richardson resigned on that
date in what became known as
the “Saturday Night Massac
re.”
Richardson quit after he
refused to obey former Presi
dent Nixon’s order to fire
Archibald Cox, the original
Watergate Special Prosecutor.
The New York Times and
The Washington Post reported
today that Richardson will be
named ambassador to Great
Britain soon, succeeding Walter
H. Annenberg who resigned in
November. A
Saxbe told reporters he wQuld
choose Deputy Attorney Gener
al Laurence Silberman 60
replace himself if he could pick
his own successor. 1
Saxbe has visited India six '
times since 1969, five while a
U.S. senator and once as
attorney general. He has met
Prime Minister Indira Ghandi
four times •
