State Attorney T. Edward
Austin said Knowles, who was
slain by police during an
escape attempt Dec. 18, was
linked to the Anderson girls’
murders by evidence supplied
to him by federal authorities.
Austin would not go into
detail about what evidence he
used to tie Knowles to the
murders.
He said he was under a
restraining order from U.S.
District Judge Wilbur D.
— Griffin Daily News Thursday, January 16,1975
Knowles
Owens in Macon, Ga., prohibit
ing him from divulging details
of the evidence.
But police sources said most
of the evidence was contained
on a tape recorded diary
Knowles made and which is
now in federal custody as part
of a grand jury investigation.
Knowles alluded to a grove of
trees on the west side of the
city as the place where the
bodies of the two young girls
would be found.
Between 35 and 40 sheriff’s
deputies and volunteers, aided
by helicopters, tractors and
infrared camera equipment,
searched the swampy area
without finding the bodies.
Sheriff Dale Carson ordered
the search Monday when the
evidence first became
available.
“That area is really remote
and inaccesible,” said Sheriff’s
Department spokesman Mike
Gould. ‘
