Griffin LL adds
nine*year*olds
The Griffin Little League has
completed plans for the 1975
season by up-dating the local
program so that it will give the
boys participating more playing
time in all age brackets from 9-
years-old to 12-years-old.
All 11 and 12 year olds will
play in the American and
National Leagues and all 9 and
10-year-olds will play in the
Continental League. All three
leagues will have eight teams
and play a 14 game schedule.
All teams in the Continental
League, at the end of the
season, will participate in a
double elimination tournament.
The City Championship series
between the league champions
of the American and National
Leagues will be the best two out
of three series.
Larry Neill, director of the
Griffin-Spalding Recreation
Department, approved of the
Little League change that in
cludes nine-year-old players.
They previously had par
ticipated in a recreation
department program for that
age group.
Under the new set-up, the nine
and 10-year-olds will compete in
the same league while the 11
and 12-year-olds will compete
against each other.

Petty wins
at Richmond
RICHMOND (UPI) - Rich
ard Petty won the Richmond
500 at Fairgrounds Raceway
Sunday.
So, what else is new?
Richard Petty always wins at
Fairgrounds Raceway.
With the exception of a 1974
victory by Bobby Allison, Petty
has won every race here since
August, 1970 —nine out of the
last 10. Sunday’s win was his
13th on the .542-mile oval.
Since there was little doubt
from the start who would win
—barring mechanical problems,
something Petty hasn’t had in a
while —one would have thought
the race would be dull.
It was.
But a couple of minor
mishaps and some ugly rain
clouds threatening throughout
the event kept the fans awake.
Under the old system, 10, 11
and 12-year-old players com
peted in the same leagues.
“I think the change improved
the Little League program,”
Neill said. “The players now
are more evenly matched and
the younger ones will play in
stead of spending most of their
time on the bench,” he added.
Three new teams will par
ticipate in the Little League
program this season.
They are First Federal
Savings and Loan, American
League; G & H Glass, National
League, and Grandma’s Pig,
Continental League.
The Griffin Little League
program is heading into its 22nd
year. It was organized in 1954
with six teams. It now has 24.

‘Foots’ Walker
does in Hawks
RICHFIELD, Ohio (UPI) -
Rookie Clarence “Foots” Walk
er didn’t plan to play Sunday
night and the Atlanta Hawks
wish he hadn’t.
Walker, fighting a bout with
the flu bug, logged 46 minutes
of action and tossed in his
NBA-high of 18 points to spark
the Cleveland Cavaliers to a
111-105 overtime victory over
the Hawks.
“I was in bed all day and felt
bad, but when Jimmy Clea
mons got hurt I went in
because I knew it was an
important game,” said the
diminutive guard from West
Georgia, who also grabbed 12
rebounds and picked up 11
assists.
Cleamons, who had been the
backcourt leader throughout the
season, suffered a partial
separation of his left shoulder
after a collision with Atlanta’s
John Brown in the first period.
“We’ll miss Cleamons plenty.
I miss any of our players at
this point in the season, but
Jim just isn’t any player,” said
Cleveland coach Bill Fitch.
“He’s been our starting guard
most of the year.”
With Cleamons sitting out
most of the next two weeks
when the Cavs take off on a
seven-game road trip, Walker
will get his chance and the
rookie is ready.
“I know a lot of pressure will
be on me, but if I get to play 35
to 40 minutes, I won’t worry
about my mistakes like I do
when I only get in for a short
time,” added Walker. “It’s a
big challenge and I’m ready for
it.”
Both teams put on scoring
sprees during the game that
wiped out big leads and the
Cavs trailed 78-71 after three
periods.
Bingo Smith’s tip-in gave the
Cavs a 95-93 lead with 2:20 left
but Dwight jjones sent the
game into overtime on a
jumper at the 1:50 mark.
After Mike Sojourner tied the
score at 101-101 with 1:50 left in
the extra session, Walker
canned a 12-footer to put the
