ADMITTING to gross mis

Press
awards
presented
ATLANTA (UPI) — The
Inland Daily Press Association
presented first place awards
today to daily newspapers at
the 36th annual typography and
design contest sponsored by
Northwestern University’s Me
dill School of Journalism.
First place awards in six
categories defined by equip
ment and circulation went to
the Portage (Wis.) Register;
Daily Illini, University of
Illinois, Champaign-Urbana;
Michigan City (Ind.) News-
Dispatch; Arlington Heights
(Ill.) Herald, Newark (Ohio)
Advocate and the Chicago
Tribune.
Plaques and award certifi
cates were presented to the
winning newspapers by Profes
sor Jack Z. Sissors of the
Medill School of Journalism.
Judges for the contest were
Marlin Landwehr, editorial
director of the Economist
Newspapers, Chicago; Susan
Stevens, art director of the
McCann-Erickson Advertising
Agency of Chicago and Lindell
Mabrey, graphic designer of
Evanston, 111.
The judges had both favora
ble comments and criticism of
the 240 entries in this year’s
contest.
Among the favorable com
ments was the use of contempo
rary typefaces, such as
Helvetica, is increasing and the
result is a modern looking
headline schedule. The judges
also said they liked variations
in the graphic treatment of
special sections of the paper so
all sections do not look alike.
The judges said that wider
columns and fewer columns to
the page are desirable. They
said four column papers were
the cleanest to look at, but five
and six column papers seem to
be the most functional and
attractive overall.
The judges critizied a trend
toward the use of nameplates
that are too large and ugly and
at the other extreme, they said
there was a wide range of
nameplates that were much too
weak and unattractive.
They also criticized the use of
large masses of body type that
are screened with a black or
gray tone. They contend this
stands out like a sore thumb
and is hard to read.
The judges recommended
that newspapers use the ser
vices of a graphic designer for
such things as nameplates and
standing heads.
The judges also recommend
ed large and bold pictures and
said, “get away from postage
stamp sized pictures.” They
said the better designed papers
use larger sized pictures for a
more dramatic effect.
Sen. Glenn
to speak
ATLANTA (UPI) — Sen.
John Glenn, D-Ohio, will be the
featured speaker tonight at the
annual SSO-dollar-a-plate Jeffer
son-Jackson Day Dinner here.
Georgia Democratic party
chairperson Marge Thurman
said the fund-raising event will
be held at 7:30 p.m. at the
Royal Coach Motor Hotel after
a day of activities beginning at
10 a. m.
The event is expected to
attract more than 1,000 Demo
crats from across the state.
Gov. George Busbee said,
“elected Democrats certainly
have an obligation to suport the
state party. I hope this year’s
dinner will see the largest
turnout of public officials in the
■ historv of the affair.”
