| Tax bill good and bad
I
WASHINGTON (UPI) - According to White House
Press Secretary Ron Nessen, President Ford considers |
Congress’ tax cut bill a mixture of good and bad things.
Nessen also said the President will take several days to
decide on whether to sign or veto it. If he accepts the bill,
* the government will begin sending out rebate checks on |
\ 1974 income taxes and also start withholding less money
for 1975 taxes. Ford has asked his experts for
recommendations on the bill.
Many going back to work
In the brightest economic report since early last |
| summer, the government’s composite index of nine
leading business indicators rose 1 per cent in February,
I the first rise in seven months. Also, oil imports dropped to
their lowest level since 1973, retail sales rose 3.5 per cent
I last week and automakers planned for increased
production. Thousands of idled workers were recalled and
Ford has two plants where workers are on overtime. The
stock market gained ground and although the nation’s
money supply declined, the growth rate was 1.7 per cent
higher than in the last 13 weeks. All these developments do
|| not mean the recession has ended, but they do indicate the
|| worst may be over.
‘Most wanted’ captured
I
PHILADELPHIA (UPI) — Susan Edith Saxe, who
| ended up on the FBl’s “10 Most Wanted” list after being a
onetime college honors student, was captured Thursday
night. A Philadelphia policeman with a good memory for
faces saw her walking along a city street. He asked her for
identification and when she tried to flee he arrested her
and took her to jail. She was identified by fingerprints.
Miss Saxe, of Albany, N.Y., is accused of helping three
men hold up a Boston bank in 1970, in which a policeman
was shot to death. k

I Substation bombed
|
SAN JOSE, Calif. (UPI) — A message was delivered to
the Pacific Gas & Electric Co., shortly after five pipe
bombs were detonated at one of their substations in San
Jose Thursday. The explosion, the latest act of sabotage of
P&GE’s facilities recently, knocked out power to some
35,000 homes in the Santa Clara Valley. The message gave
the utility company a 48-hour ultimatum to provide free
| service to all unemployed persons. A $15,000 reward is
1 being offered for the capture of terrorists.
| Airlift suspended
PHNOM PENH (UPl)—The U.S. airlift to Phnom Penh
was suspended today because of the firing of at least 28
shells at Pochentong Airport this morning. The action
I came after the first planes of the day managed to land
I with supplies of food, fuel and ammunition at dawn.
American officials are studying the security situation to
I determine whether the airlift could be resumed.
I Government troops reported gains against the rebels in
fierce fighting for control of the “rocket belt” region west
t of the airport. Reports also were received that
government marines and paratroopers pushed back the
| rebels from the east bank of the Mekong River across
from Phnom Penh.
