Mr. Huckaby
Mr. William Parks “Bill”
Huckaby, 73, died early this
morning at his residence in
Digby, Line Creek district of
Spalding County, after a short
illness.
Mr. Huckaby was a lifelong
resident of Spalding County, son
of the late Jefferson Davis
Huckaby and the late Sara
Augusta Gordon Huckaby. He
was a merchant for over 40
years and was a member of the
Mt. Zion United Methodist
Church.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Fronie Nichols Huckaby;
a daughter, Mrs. Grace Gary of
Springfield, Mass.; four sons,
Fred Huckaby, Jerome
Huckaby, both of Brooks,
Jimmy Huckaby and Dexter
Huckaby, both of Griffin; a
brother, Gordon Huckaby of
Griffin; five grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted
Sunday afternoon at 2:30
o’clock in Haisten’s chapel. The
Rev. Richard Fields, the Rev.
G. L. Howard and the Rev.
Calvin Smith will officiate and
burial will be in Griffin
Memorial Gardens. The body
will remain at Haisten Funeral
Home.
Mrs. Torbert
Mrs. Maggie Woodall Tor
bert, 85, of 148 Atlanta street,
Barnesville, died Thursday
night at the Medical Center in
Columbus.
Mrs. Torbert was born in Lee
County and had made her home
in Barnesville for a number of
years. She was the widow of Mr.
Edward Torbert and a member
of the Calvary Baptist Church in
Barnesville.
Survivors include four
daughters, Mrs. Claudia Mayo
of Barnesville, Mrs. C. D. Cox of
Lovejoy, Mrs. B. H. Maddox of
Hampton and Mrs. Joe
Wilbanks of Columbus; a son,
Lamar Woodall of Barnesville;
22 grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted
Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock
in the Hubbard Funeral Home
chapel. The Rev. A. B. Barnhill
and the Rev. Doug McKenzie
will officiate and burial will be
in Greenwood cemetery. The
body will remain at the funeral
home in Barnesville.
Mrs. Buckner
Mrs. Estelle Buckner, 72, of
Atlanta, formerly of Lamar
County died Thursday night at
Grady Memorial Hospital in
Atlanta.
Funeral plans will be an
nounced by McDowell United
Funeral Home.
Mr. Brassell
The funeral for Mr. Sears
Brassell of Spalding Heights
will be conducted Saturday
afternoon at 1 o’clock from the
Eighth Street Baptist Church.
The Rev. M. M. Solomon will
officiate and burial will be in
Mt. Zion cemetery in Zetella.

services
Revival services will begin
Easter morning at the Grace
Baptist Church and continue
each night through April 6.
Jerry Bryant of Stone Moun
tain will be the visiting evange
list. Services through the week
will begin at 7:00 p.m.
A baby dedication will be
included in the 11 a.m. Easter
service. A sunrise service will
begin at 6:30.
Eddy Sisson will lead the,
singing for Easter services as
well as the revival. Mrs.
Marsha Huckaby will be the
pianist.
The Singing Disciples will
present special music Monday
night and Sara Salters and the
Believers of Thomaston will
present special music Thursday
night.
Pastor of the church is the

daughter named
STAR teacher
A former Griffinite has been
selected Jones County Star
Teacher for 1974-75.
Ms. Nancy Bowles, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bowles
of Walker’s Mill road, was
named by one of her pupils, Star
Student Jeffrey Eugene Turner.
Ms. Bowles teaches English
and speech at Jones County
High in Gray. She is advisor to
the Yearbook staff, Debate
Society, Drama Club and Guitar
Club.
She is a second year teacher
and a graduate of Berry College
in Rome.
Graphic art
workshop
is planned
A one-day graphic arts
workshop will be conducted at
Gordon Junior College in Smith
Hall on April 8 from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m.
The course is designed to
teach basic design work to
business employees and laymen
responsible for brochures and
publications. Topics to be
covered are art materials and
their uses, reference sources,
and advertising media, such as
logos, brochures, business
cards, letterheads and
newspaper ads.
Mrs. Mary Messer, a
freelance artist from
Thomaston, is the course in
structor.
Ex-Griffinite
receives honor
Mrs. Brenda Bailey Cormier
has been named 10th district
Science Teacher for the Year
1974-75 by the Georgia Science
Teacher Association.
The presentation will be made
April 4 at the awards’ luncheon
in Atlanta at the Marriott.
Mrs. Cormier is a science
teacher in a private school in
Augusta. She is a graduate of
Griffin High School and Georgia
State College. Mrs. Cormier
received her master’s degree in
science and biology from New
York State University.
She is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. R. S. Bailey of Griffin and
wife of Dr. Rene E. Cormier.

kill
five
ATLANTA (UPI) - The
Georgia State Patrol said today
five persons were killed in
Georgia traffic accidents Thurs
day.
Two of the victims died in a
single crash in Wilkinson
County. They were identified as
17-year-old McKenley Wolford
of Mclntyre and 70-year-old
Hugh Amerson, also of Mcln
trye. The two-car wreck oc
curred north of Mclntyre on
Georgia 29.
Johnny Lee Johnson, 55, of
Thomasville was killed when
his vehicle ran off the road and
struck a bridge abutment. The
accident happened north of
Thomasville on Georgia 3 in
Thomas County.
James Hammock, 43, died
when he was struck by a hit
run vehicle while riding a
bicycle north of Macon on
Georgia 11.
James Overstreet, 53, was
killed when the car he was
driving struck another vehicle
head-on east of Baxley on
Georgia 144.

Elks here
Leon , Blosfield has been
elected exalted ruler of the
Griffin Lodge of Elks 1207. He
succeeded Wyman Mathews.
Other officers elected to serve
with him include: Mike Wiley,
esteemed leading knight; Jerry

Jim Berry, esteemed lecturing
knight; C. B. Reeves, esquire;

have designed a 40-foot-high
granite monument in Leningrad
to mark the city’s World War II
siege by the Nazis. An
underground cavern will hold
wartime posters and documents
concerning the siege.

eye training

Haisten Brothers Funeral
Home in Griffin completed a
one-day course at the Emory
University School of Medicine
in Atlanta.
The session was sponsored by
the Lions Eye Bank, Atlanta.
Webb was one of 23 licensed
morticians from throughout the
state who received training in
the removal of eyes from
deceased persons. The donation
of eyes is authorized by the
person while living or by the
next-of-kin immediately after
death. The donor eyes are sent
to the eye bank, where they are
given to eye surgeons who
perform corneal transplants.

The Holiness Tabernacle will
hold a special Easter service
beginning with sunrise services
at 7 a.m., followed by an old
fashion foot washing and
communion.
Sunday school will be at 10
a.m. The youth choir will
present special music at the
morning worship service, at 11
a.m.

New Kiwanis
will get
charter
The new Kiwanis Club of
Spalding County will receive its
charter at a ladies night
meeting on Thursday, at 7:30
p.m., at the Griffin Elks Club.
President Joe Ballard will
accept the charter on behalf of
the new club. Georgia District
Governor of Kiwanis In
ternational, E. Alton Reeves,
Jr., East Point, Ga., will make
the presentation. Twelfth Divis
ion Lt. Governor David Black of
Jackson, Ga. will preside.
Sponsors of the Spalding
County Club are the Kiwanis
Clubs of Jackson, Hampton, and
Griffin. Other clubs in the
Twelfth Division are Covington,
Barnesville, and Henry County.

tian Church beginning at 7:22.

Dogs stolen
in county
Several thefts were being
investigated by the Spalding
Sheriff’s Department, including
the theft of two dogs from a
county residence.
Paul Westmoreland of Laura
drive reported that two of his
dogs have been stolen.
They were described as a
brown over white German
Shepperd and a brown German
Shepperd and Collie mixed
breed.
A Poulan chain saw was
stolen from a county truck
parked in the yard of the
stockade last week. Mr. Joe
Greenway of the Spalding
Public Works Camp reported
the theft.
Sheriff’s officers also were
investigating the theft of four
tape players and a number of
tapes from cars parked at the
Dundee Mill No. One lot last
night.
Their owners are employes of
the mill, lawmen said.
