24 babies die
in hospital fire
ROKELA, Yugoslavia (UPI)
— Authorities today said
hospital personnel may have
been responsible for the deaths
of 24 babies in an infant ward
Friday.
Four babies survived the
blaze, but they suffered severe
burns and were listed in critical
condition.
Seventeen boys and seven
girls died from burns and
suffocation when the early
morning fire gutted the ward at
newly built Dr. Zdravko Kucic
hospital. The victims were
between one and seven days
old.
While faulty wiring caused
the blaze, a number of medical
staffers were responsible for
the tragedy, public prosecutor
Milan Zatezalo said.
Mamie Eisenhower
had a good day
FT. GORDON, Ga. (UPI) —
Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower “had
a good day” Friday, according
to the doctors who are treating
the former first lady for an
intestial condition at Ft. Gordon
Army Medical Center.
Mrs. Eisenhower, 78, was
admitted to the hospital Tues
day afternoon suffering from
intestinal bleeding.
Doctors stopped the bleeding
shortly after she was admitted,
but it started up again on
Wednesday, when her condition
report was changed from good
to fair. But the bleeding
stopped again and has not
recurred since Wednesday.
“Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower has
had a good day, according to
her physicians, and she is
Heart transplants
not successful
SAVANNAH, Ga. (UPI) -
Dr. Michael E. Debakey, one of
the pioneers of heart transplant
surgery, said Friday medical
science has come to the
conclusion that substitute
hearts are not successful and
therefore fewer such operations
are being performed.

“We shall certainly open

persons,” he said.
Local authorities declared
today a day of mourning and
flags flew at half-staff. All
public performances and enter
tainments were canceled.
Doctors said the fire engulfed
the ward so fast that the
hospital staff had no chance to
mount a successful rescue
operation.
Some of the mothers, who
were on a different floor in the
same building, had to be put
under sedation when they
learned what had happened,
doctors said.
There will be a joint funeral

few days, authorities said.
showing steady improvement,”
said Maj. Glenn Foster, base
information officer.
“At this time, her doctors
state that her general condition
is good,” he said.
Mrs. Eisenhower, widow of
former President Dwight D.
Eisenhower, was admitted to
the base hospital while she was
relaxing at “Mamie’s Cabin,” a
$200,000 retreat built for the
late President and his wife on
the grounds of the nearby
Augusta National Golf Course.
Mrs. Eisenhower’s only visi
tor during her three-day hospi
tal stay has been her son, John
Eisenhower. She is expected to
remain in the hospital from
seven to 10 days, Foster said.
“From a medical and scien
tific standpoint, there is very
little interest in it (heart
transplanting), and this is
because it has very little use,”
said Debakey. “It is not
successful.”
Debakey told more than 700
doctors attending a conference
here on stroke-related problems
that most patients with substi
tute hearts die within a year
after they receive their tran
splants.
He said there is no way to
determine whether heart trans
plants will ever become com
monplace.
“You can’t determine when
new knowledge becomes availa
ble,” said Debakey.

DALTON, Ga.—Aaron Rowe (1) with wife Betty, a father (rs five, has been out of work since
December, has decided to sell a kidney or an eye for SIO,OOO. Rowe decided on this course
after he had to use a kerosene lamp for his mobile home when the electricity was cut off.

Kidney offer stands
despite his new job
DALTON, Ga. (UPI) -
Aaron Rowe, a disconsolate
father of five children, will go
to work on a new job Monday,
but he stills says he’s willing to
barter a part of his body for
the money he needs to help his
family and other poor people.
Rowe offered to donate an
eye or a kidney in exchange for
SIO,OOO.
The offer brought a lot of
public response, including the
offer of a full-time job with the
Accurate Finishing Co., a firm
that makes laminated backing
for carpets.
Ken Tate, a foreman at the
company, said Rowe will report
to work on the first shift
Monday.
But despite his new job,
Rowe says the offer to donate
an organ to a worthy individual
or medical group still stands.
“No sir, the job doesn’t
change my original offer,” said
Rowe from his mobile home
Friday. “Although it’s a perma
nentrtype job, it still doesn’t
pay me enough to really help
me pay all the bills I have
waiting.”
Rowe said any money he
Atlanta
likely
to get aid
ATLANTA (UPI) - Federal
officials have assured Gov.
George Busbee that President
Ford will speedily approve the
governor’s request for federal
reconstruction funds to provide
relief from the tornado that
struck Atlanta.
Busbee’s office said Friday
the approval by Ford and the
Federal Disaster Assistance
Administration could come
early next week.
Busbee, who is on a post-
General Assembly fishing trip,
named Tom Purdue, his ad
ministrative assistant, to coor
dinate the disaster relief when
it becomes available and keep
the governor informed of its
progress.
Purdue said federal officials
have indicated a favorable
decision by Ford on the $21.1
million disaster relief aid,
requested by Busbee Thursday,
was imminent.
Purdue said Georgia officials
anticipate no delay such as
occurred when the state asked
the FDAA to approve federal
relief funds for victims of the
Fort Valley tornado last month.
Busbee issued a proclamation
immediately after the storm
struck the city’s northwest side
Monday morning declaring it a
state disaster area, a move that
was necessary before the
federal government could re
ceive a request for federal
disaster relief.
Within hours after Ford and
the FDAA approve disaster
relief, two disaster field centers
will be in operation at Archer
High School and Northside High
School, Purdue said.
realizes from the coverage,
including any funds he gets for
an eye or kidney, will be
shared with others who are also
down on their luck.
“I know there are a lot of
people who are going to want to
do this (offer money),” said
Rowe. “There are lots of people
in my situation who just
haven’t stood up and made
themselves heard. I intend to
use any money I get to help
them as well as myself. I don’t
want to be rich or famous. I’ve
got five beautiful kids, and
that’s all the riches I need —to
